HOW TO AVOID ILLNESS AND OTHER MEDICAL CONSEQUENCES WHILE TRAVELING THIS CHRISTMAS

www.niketsonpal.com

A record-breaking 112.5 million people – more than a third of all Americans – are expected to travel this holiday season, including 102 million who will take their trips by car. Nothing ruins a long-awaited vacation faster than getting sick or being in medical distress.  We turned to Dr. Niket Sonpal, an NYC internist and gastroenterologist for some tips on how to avoid health consequences will traveling.

Avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs. Deep vein thrombosis can cause leg pain or swelling, but also can occur with no symptoms. For travelers, this can happen on long haul trips where you are not moving. Dr. Sonpal recommends if you are flying or on a train, to move around the cabin to get the blood flowing in your legs. If you are driving, take a break at a rest stop and walk around. Compression socks are also another option to prevent DVT.

Don’t Get Nauseous

People can experience motion sickness on virtually any mode of transportation. To combat this, Dr. Sonpal suggests Dramamine® Non-Drowsy Naturals, Dramamine®’s first non-drowsy formulation. It contains the clinically tested ginger dosage required for preventing and treating motion sickness. Other sources of ginger, including candies, gums, or ginger ale, may not contain a full clinical dose. For someone who is already experiencing nausea while traveling, it is a good idea to keep Emetrol on hand which is an over the counter nausea medication that does not cause drowsiness.

Avoid Bloating on a Plane

If you get gassy on a plane, you’re not alone! Dr. Sonpal explains that, “As the pressure around you decreases, the gas in your belly isn’t constrained as much and it expands. This can make you feel bloated or become distended.” It is essential to avoid foods that cause gas or have salt. Skip the tomato juice in flight and stick with non-carbonated water. Avoid alcohol, cruciferous vegetables, dairy and high sodium snacks such as salted peanuts or pretzels. Foods that are protein packed, magnesium-rich and high in Vitamin C are good options.

Sanitize Your Surfaces

Planes and trains are a breeding ground for illness.  The former are awful due to re-circulated air. Most travelers would be appalled if they really knew how germy their tray tables are! Dr. Sonpal suggests sanitizing wipes for your tray table, seat belt clip and hand rests of your seats on planes and trains. When you exit a restroom on a plane or train and touch the door handles, be sure to use hand sanitizer even if you already washed your hands.

Get Your Shots Before Traveling Abroad!

Before you even book your trip, make sure you’re up to date on your shots. If you’re traveling to an area where you’re at risk for picking up an illness like malaria, you might be prescribed preventative medication. Dr. Sonpal suggests that, “People should use the CDC website for recommended vaccines for travel abroad or see a travel clinic. The health risks posed to Americans vary based on the country they are traveling to.”

Don’t Touch the Ice!

When traveling to a different country, most people are very cautious about only drinking bottled water.  Many folks forget that ice is simply frozen water and put it into their soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. Contrary to what one might think, freezing water does not kill bacteria. The only way to be sure it is safe is if you boiled the water and then froze it.

Avoid Jet Lag

Even a relatively short time change from EST to PST (3 hours) can cause jet lag. With some international travel from the United States, the time difference can be as much as twelve hours. If you’re traveling east, try going to bed one hour earlier each night for a few days before your departure. Go to bed one hour later for several nights if you’re flying west. If possible, eat meals closer to the time you’ll be eating them at your destination. Dr. Sonpal suggests that you set your watch to the new time before you leave. Once you reach your destination, try not to sleep until the local nighttime, no matter how tired you are.

Essential Medicine/Supplies to Travel With

Dr. Sonpal stresses never to check your medication with your baggage, always keep it in your carry on. Have a fresh re-fill on prescription medication with extra doses in case you get stuck at your destination. In addition, here are some essential over the counter meds/supplies to travel with:

Benadryl- For allergic reactions such as insect or bee bites.

Pepto Bismol- For diarrhea

Laxative such as Dulcolax

Anti-biotic ointment such as Neosporin

Common cold/sinus remedies such as Mucinex or Claritin

Pain relievers such as Tylenol or Motrin

Anti- Nausea medication such as Emetrol

Motion Sickness medication such as Dramamine. If you are the driver, be sure to take the non-drowsy version.

Electrolyte tablets for dehydration

Hydrocortisone cream to relieve itching from rashes, bites, poison ivy etc.

Aloe to soothe sunburned skin

Band-Aids

Digital Thermometer

Nasal Spray to prevent clogged ears while flying

Tweezers

Eye Drops

Epi-Pen if you are prone to severe allergic reactions

How to Find a Reliable Physician if you are Traveling Abroad

The US embassy in your destination country (http://www.usembassy.gov/) can help you locate medical services and will notify your family and friends in the event of an emergency. HOW TO AVOID HOLIDAY HEARTBURN AS EXPLAINED BY AN INTERNIST AND GASTROENTEROLOGIST

 www.niketsonpal.com

Even if you’re not a “foodie” most people look forward to indulging in the culinary delights of holiday time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. This  means that even people who are typically disciplined eat too much in one evening, eat rapidly, imbibe amounts of alcohol they are unaccustomed to, and consume foods that may not be part of their regular diet because “tis the season.”  While nobody likes a medical grinch, there are ways to have gastronomic fun without paying the price with holiday heartburn. Dr. Niket Sonpal is an internist and gastroenterologist at Touro College of Medicine.  He shares his tips for having your holiday cake and eating it too.

Heartburn happens when stomach acid flows backward into the esophagus. It can also go by two names: GER (gastroesophageal reflux) or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). GER is also known as acid indigestion, happening only once in a while. GERD is chronic heartburn that can lead to esophageal cancer if left untreated.

Here are some tips for avoiding holiday heartburn

Eat light turkey, not dark

High-fat food can spell trouble if you’re prone to heartburn, so do yourself a favor and skip the skin when it comes to turkey time. Your best bet is to eat turkey breast and avoid oilier dark meat. The same goes for gravy. If it’s not fat free, it may be smarter to skip this dish.

Choose baked, not mashed

If you have chronic heartburn, you don’t have to give up your favorite foods. You just have to choose wisely to save yourself some pain later on. For example, mashed potatoes can trigger heartburn, but baked potatoes may not. When it comes to dairy products, the less fat the better.  Limit butter and avoid sour cream.

Choose multigrain rolls or bread

When choosing grain-based food for the holiday, you can’t go wrong with multigrain bread or rolls. Corn bread and white bread are good choices too,if you want to avoid heartburn.

One side dish that should be strictly for the kids, however, is macaroni and cheese. This is one of those dishes known to trigger acid reflux, according to the National Heartburn Alliance.

Selecting a salad

Salads are good news for those with chronic heartburn or GERD—if you have the right salad dressing and ingredients, that is. High-fat foods are a known trigger for acid reflux, so the National Heartburn Alliance recommends avoiding creamy salad dressings, as well as oil and vinegar. Your best bet is a low-fat salad dressing, and avoid tomatoes, raw onions, and other acid-aggravating ingredients. (Want fruit in your salad? Choose apples, not oranges, if you want to avoid heartburn.)

Avoid foods that cause heartburn.

People who suffer from heartburn often know the trigger foods that cause symptoms. Common foods include chocolates, caffeine and greasy foods. These foods relax the lower esophagus sphincter muscle, when this muscle is relaxed, the food will go back up and cause heartburn. Other foods that can trigger heartburn include acidic foods such as citrus fruits or carbonated beverages. This means avoid Champagne!

Skip Mint Desserts

Candy canes and chocolate mint desserts are best left for others. These dangerous holiday delectables are notorious for helping acid reflux on its way.

Eat more ginger

Ginger is one ingredient that can help ease heartburn, if you don’t get too much of it. (More than 2 to 4 grams per day can actually cause heartburn.)

Ginger is a natural match for root vegetable dishes commonly served during the holidays. Heartburn-friendly vegetables include carrots, cabbage, peas, broccoli, and green beans

Linger Over Your Food

Take the time to eat slowly and enjoy your food. Rushing through your meal or chewing with your mouth open can increase your chances of indigestion or heartburn. Linger over your food and allow yourself to feel full by giving your food time to digest.

 Limit Alcoholic Beverages

Have to have that holiday egg nog? Limit it to one glass. This festive beverage can do double the damage. Not only does it contain alcohol that irritates your stomach but it contains the added dose of diary that can cause bloating and gas.

Cut yourself off.

After-hours holiday parties can keep you snacking all night, but eating too close to bedtime can make acid reflux worse. Stop eating and drinking (water included) three hours before bedtime.

Ditch the post-meal nap:

Sleeping right after eating can increase GERD symptoms. Instead of falling asleep, try going for a walk.

SKINCARE 911: WHAT TO DO WHEN A SKINCARE DISASTER ERUPTS BEFORE A HOLIDAY PARTY

Waking up on the day before or day of a big holiday party with an unsightly skincare emergency can stress anyone out. How many people have canceled an invitation because a cold sore erupted? How about cystic acne on your cheek that appears on New Year’s Eve? While neither of these is “life-threatening” conditions, for anyone wanting to look good for the in-laws,  they might as well be. However, there are solutions. Dr. Manish Shah is a Denver Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. As a father to girls, he can relate to these skincare 911s and shares his expertise on what can be done to mitigate various conditions.

Problem: Cold Sore

Solution: Dr. Shah offers cortisone injections to patients who want to look better faster. “Very diluted cortisone into the cold sore, this can bring the inflammation down quite rapidly,” he says. If you are afraid of needles, call your doctor and ask him/her to call in a prescription for Valtrex, Famvir, or Acylovir, Dr. Shah says. You can pick up Abreva, an over-the-counter medication. If you can’t make it to the pharmacy, you can try some old-fashioned remedies: Visine will help take the red out. You can also use a cold compress and Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Problem: Allergic Reaction

Solution: The first thing you need to do is stop eating or using whatever is causing the allergic reaction. If the reaction happens a few days before an occasion, Dr. Shah recommends using hydrocortisone cream twice a day and taking Allegra, Claritin or Zyrtec which are longer acting and less sedating than Benadryl. Try a whole-milk compress for 10 minutes twice a day. For allergic reactions, use the hydrocortisone cream and then cover up redness by canceling it out entirely. The opposite of red is green, so apply green tinted concealer on the red area. The combination will create a flesh-toned hue. A good quality tinted moisturizer naturally has green/yellow undertones and also provides moisture to dry skin. “If this type of reaction is something you have never experienced before, go immediately to your dermatologist,” says Dr. Shah.

Problem: Cystic Acne Breakout

There are some people who use a lancet or small knife to cut into a cyst and fish out the clogged part of the pore. “Cutting open a cyst is extremely risky. You not only run the risk of getting an infection, but you also run the risk of scarring, as in a permanent skin indentation or protrusion,” says Dr. Shah. And what if you cut open a cyst but can’t squeeze out the root clog? You don’t know where the root is or how deep it resides inside your skin. You can’t even be 100% confident that you will be able to completely remove the hardened plug of the cyst. If any remnants of the clog remain, the cyst is likely to get re-inflamed and come back even worse. It’s also not exactly good to cut open skin and dig around and squeeze the wound. Doing so will only make a bloody mess, increase the chance of skin scarring, and prolong the time it takes the cyst to heal.

Solution: Here’s a secret that many a supermodel or actress uses: Steroid shot. Dr. Shah explains that “when we discuss treating acne with cortisone or “steroid” shots, we are referring to the process of gently placing a very dilute quantity of a “glucocorticoid” steroid into the cyst. Glucocorticoids are a class of steroid molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies and have numerous functions including the regulation of human metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. They have very potent anti-inflammatory effects, so they are often used to treat inflammatory diseases in medicine. They can be formulated as creams to treat skin rashes or as pills to treat systemic disease. They can also be injected directly into local areas of inflammation such as in arthritic joints and inflamed acne cysts. Within one or two days of injection into a cyst, the steroid will shrink the inflammation producing relief of pain and almost immediate cosmetic improvement.”

Problem: Puffy Eyes

Solution: The key to reducing the puffiness of puffy eyes is having something cool applied to them. “A cool compress or cooled cucumber slices applied for 5 to 10 minutes can constrict blood and lymph vessels,” says Dr. Shah. You can also use cool tea bags, which contain tannins that will help reduce swelling. And since puffy eyes can be caused by a high salt diet or alcohol, try to cut out both before an important occasion.

Problem: Sunburn

Solution: Take a cool bath or shower. Set the water to a cool temperature that’s just below lukewarm and relax for 10 to 20 minutes. The temperature will ease the pain, and the water will stop your skin from becoming as irritated. Repeat as often as you need to. Avoid using soap, bath oils, or other detergents as you bathe – they’ll irritate your skin and possibly make it even worse. If you have blisters forming on your skin, take a bath instead of showering. The pressure from the shower might pop your blisters. When you get out, don’t rub your skin dry with a towel. Instead, let yourself air dry, or pat the towel over your skin in small, gentle movements. Apply cold compresses to your skin. If you’re not in a situation where you can bathe, or you’d just prefer not to, you can instead apply cold, wet compresses to your skin. Dampen a washcloth or other piece of fabric with cold water and lay it over the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes. Re-wet it as often as you need to. Apply aloe vera to burned skin. Using the pads of your fingers, gently apply the aloe to your sunburn. Don’t “rub it in” all the way, as you might with a regular lotion. Leave it a bit goopy and moist on top of the burn – this helps prevent the skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Reapply as often as necessary. Treat inflammation with cortisone cream (optional). Cortisone creams contain a small dose of steroids that can work to reduce inflammation to your sunburn.

Problem: Too much filler

The Solution: Dr. Shah suggests doing fillers no sooner than 1 month before a big event to allow time for healing and touch ups. One of the reasons Dr. Shah leans toward hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane is because they are easily reversed with Hyaluronidase. This product dissolves and degrades the Restylane, Juvederm or Perlane so as to reverse the results of the initial injection. It’s a great insurance policy when choosing a practitioner. Make sure yours has it at his/her disposal. Most patients find the immediate results of soft tissue filler treatments very satisfying. If an undesirable result occurs, your treatment provider should be able to discuss and carry out all of the treatment options. Removing the effects of a “filler” treatment can be difficult. This is why any filler treatment needs to be done carefully, conservatively and only by very experienced and Board -Certified Specialists. Hyaluronic Acid based dermal fillers have the additional benefit of being partially or completely reversed with time or with the injection of a commercially available enzyme known as Hyaluronidase.

DON’T TRY THESE SKIN CARE DEVICES, GADGETS OR TIPS AT HOME WARNS DERMATOPATHOLOGIST

www.gfacemd.com

Life hacks, DIY tricks, and at home devices that are meant to “mimic the effects of in-office skin care treatments are all the rage right now. They are posted on Instagram, YouTube, and all over the Internet. While some are very constructive and budget-friendly, others are ineffective or downright dangerous. We asked Dr. Gretchen Frieling, who is a Boston area Dermatopathologist, to highlight several highly publicized methods that should bear the warning, “don’t try this at home.”

Dermaplaning- Dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure that removes the top layers of your skin. The procedure aims to remove fine wrinkles and deep acne scarring, as well as make the skin’s surface look smoothIt uses an exfoliating blade to skim dead skin cells and hair from your face.

The Risks– Anecdotally, the risk of infection, complications, and experiencing pain during home dermaplaning is higher when you do it yourself.  “If you have acne, there is a chance that the blade could nick a pimple,” says Dr. Frieling which means it would take longer to heal. In addition, the tool used for dermaplaning is not a safety razor like what we ladies shave with. The device or tool used to accomplish the dermaplaning on the face is made of a sharp blade with a handle or wand.

At home “Derma-Rollers” for MicroNeedling” Aestheticians and dermatologists use derma rollers on clients to increase elasticity, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and help with discoloration. Professional treatment can cost anywhere from $100 to $1,200 per session. According to Marketwatch, “A trend report for 2018 from lifestyle site Pinterest says it’s seen a 345% increase in posts for the “derma-roller” over the past year.”  Dr. Frieling is not in favor of using the tools at home because, “the needles aren’t big enough to penetrate the proper holes into the skin, so you’re essentially damaging your face for no reason. And without proper sterilization, derma rollers can harbor harmful bacteria causing infections, breakouts, and can trigger skin conditions such as rosacea, which causes redness and bumps on the face; eczema, itchy inflammation spots; and brown patches on the skin.”

Injecting Botox or other “Black Market” Filler into Your Face– First, even if you were able to get your hands on “real” Botox or filler such as Juvederm or Restylane® it’s almost like putting a firearm in the hands of someone untrained at shooting.  There is no safe way to give yourself Botox. You can’t trust what you’re buying, and even if you could, no amount of YouTube-ing will ever adequately teach you the skills you need to inject it. First, you need to know where to inject the substance. The answer is not to point the needle at the fine lines. After all, you’re relaxing muscles, not filling in wrinkles. Injecting Botox requires an understanding of facial muscles. You need to know which muscles should be relaxed for the desired results and where to target them. Second, you need to know how deeply to insert the needle and how much of the mixed substance you should apply in any given location.

Incorrect injection practices can lead to a host of complications, including eyelid drooping (ptosis), excessive swelling, excessive bruising, and a greater risk of infection. In fact, the infection may become so severe that it becomes a staph infection, an infection that spreads throughout the body and causes a variety of diseases. In any case, recovery will be longer, and the results may not be what you intended.

Lip Plumper Suction Devices- We have Kylie Jenner to thank for these! They are much less expensive than filler in the lips but with a far shorter shelf life. Dr. Frieling’s verdict: “Overuse of suction cup lip plumpers can cause misalignment of the teeth due to the outward pressure of the suction. Devices such as these can also cause swelling and bruising of the lips (and sometimes permanent scarring) when used excessively. The advice is to use these devices sensibly and with caution.”

At home acne extractors- The county has become obsessed with popping pimples thanks in part to the success of the TV show “Dr. Pimple Popper.” Acne extractors sold online, and people are using them at home. But should they?  Picking causes scars or scabs by ripping off the top layer of skin, whereas extracting by a professional pulls out the fluids or solids inside a pimple. It’s far more sterile, sanitary, and cleans the pore of the extra debris. Why can’t you simply do this yourself? Acne extraction, be it white or blackheads, is a ‘don’t try this at home procedure.’ It’s a one-way ticket to scarring, infection and even more breakouts. Only through a professional facial will your skin be prepped and steamed correctly for extractions – by the hands of a trained, licensed esthetician. Skin that has not been adequately prepped for extractions may be resistant, requiring more pressure and manipulation. If used too aggressively, the pressure of the extractor tool can inflame and even bruise the skin. Additionally, a skin care professional is well-practiced in gentle and efficient movements to maximize results while minimizing potential harm.

Cuticle Cutters-Trimming or cutting cuticles during a manicure is purely cosmetic and doesn’t benefit the nail in any way. In fact, it’s actually harmful to your nails. “The small area of skin is there to protect your nails from infection. When this skin is removed, your nail is left unprotected from bacteria and fungus. Dr. Frieling recommends pushing back the cuticles by applying cuticle remover on each nail.

Chemical Peels- Chemical peels are designed to work by removing part of the top layer of skin to reveal fresher skin for a more youthful appearance. Many products containing low concentrations of acid are sold through beauty retailers and drug stores and are often safe to use. People also are treated with peels using a higher concentration at medi-spas or doctor’s offices.  When it comes to alpha hydroxy acids or (AHAs) like salicylic and glycolic acids, a concentration of 10 percent or less is safe for home, and more than 30 percent should be reserved for a professional environment, according to a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel. Like many substances, illegal concentrations of chemical peels can be purchased online for substantially less than they would cost in a doctor’s office. But what price do you pay for a “bargain?”  According to Dr. Frieling, “the dangers of experimenting with a medical grade peel at home are numerous and can include: extreme pain in the form of stinging, actual burns to the skin, blistering, scarring, changes in skin color, infection.” What’s more, a skin care professional will determine if you are even a candidate for a chemical peel and possibly rule you out if you have taken the acne medication isotretinoin in the past six months, have a dark complexion, have a personal history of ridged areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue (keloids), have abnormal skin pigmentation, have a history of frequent or severe outbreaks of cold sores.

Dr. Frieling says that there are worthwhile “skin care hacks,” DIY recipes for the skin, and some at home devices that are safe and effective. Before buying into the latest Instagram sensation, consult with your doctor first to make sure that you are a good candidate and that what you are considering is safe and effective.

5 Amazing Benefits of CBD Coffee

Before we jump into the benefits, let’s start by explaining what exactly CBD coffee is. Well, as many of you may know, CBD or cannabidiol is a compound that comes from the cannabis plant. It’s the very compound that carries therapeutic effects unlike THC (that causes high and makes cannabis illegal). CBD has the potential to promote relaxation and ‘feel-good’ sensation.

While some like to incorporate cannabidiol in forms like oils and lotions for better health, many enthusiasts are advocating the idea of infusing CBD with coffee beans/grains. So, in a way, it’s exactly what it sounds like – coffee combined with CBD. The idea is to harness the potential of cannabis minus the possible intoxication. Just so you know – CBD coffee is legal and safe for consumption.

Why Drink CBD Coffee?

Most of us know an awful lot about the digestive system, skeletal system, and nervous system.  But, not many of us know about our body’s endocannabinoid system. It’s made up of cellular receptors that are supposed to respond to certain molecules called cannabinoids. Upon consuming certain cannabinoids like CBD or cannabidiol, your body’s endocannabinoid system tends to elicit a range of health benefits such as –

  1.   An improved sense of calmness and relaxation – One of the prominent aspects of CBD that everyone should know is its potential to induce calmness and relaxation. Check out this study that sheds light on this aspect. We also know that most Americans find it hard to function without a cup of Joe first thing in the morning. While on the one hand, it can fuel you up for the day, it can also contribute to the jitters and the anxiety and a racing heart. A large chunk of the American population is already stressed out. Drinking coffee is like adding fuel to the fire.

Adding CBD to coffee tends to balance things out. In simpler words, you get to enjoy the energetic effects of coffee minus the jittery and nervous sensation it accompanies; thanks to the relaxing properties of cannabidiol.

  1. A Natural Mood Booster – CBD can naturally put you in a happy mood. Many online sources and studies mention this aspect of cannabidiol. As per a published study in the Journal of Neuropharmacology, CBD tends to improve the production of serotonin which is a neurotransmitter that induces ‘feel good’ sensation. This is one of the additional reasons why you would want to perk up your morning coffee and make it a whole lot interesting by adding CBD.

  1. A natural source of antioxidants – Antioxidants are supposed to fight free radicals, slow down the pace of aging, and work against myriad physical ailments. We know coffee is already a rich source of antioxidants. But, what’s interesting is that so is cannabidiol which is icing on the cake. And, while there may not be any solid evidence;  by combining the power of these antioxidants coming from coffee and CBD, your body may be better able at keeping health conditions lie Alzheimer’s and cancer at bay.

  1. Could help Manage Certain Symptoms of anxiety – The most powerful tool in the marketing arsenal that popularized CBD as the good kind of cannabidiol is its potential to promote relaxation. This inevitably links to managing certain signs of anxiety and restlessness. When combined with the energetic effects of coffee, CBD coffee could work wonders in elevating mood and combating anxiety to a certain degree. Check out this study link which talks about CBD’s potential to manage anxiety.

  1.   May Help Regulate Sleep Patterns – It is not uncommon for many to turn to CBD as a way to naturally fall asleep and manage certain sleeping issues. And, while CBD may not be a medicine, it could help an occasional user fall asleep more easily and naturally. People who suffer from insomnia or some other similar sleeping condition might experience some relief from drinking CBD infused coffee.

The Synergistic Effect – How Coffee and CBD Work Together

We already mentioned this once or twice earlier. But, let’s reaffirm it one more time – If you break down cannabidiol, you will see that its true essence lies in relaxing you. Coffee, on the other hand, is supposed to energize you. It’s sort of a bipolar thing. When you mix these two, you tend to experience a sort of ‘push-pull’ effect, if you will.

It’s natural to think that the two will cancel each other out. But, in actuality, they tend to balance each other. To that end, you might feel calmer without sacrificing the much-needed energy you need to function and get through the day. Caffeine and CBD, in this sense, go together nicely. You get to enjoy a well-rounded experience that is far better than consuming caffeine or cannabidiol in isolation.

How To Include CBD In Your Cup Of Joe

Although CBD coffee is no novel concept and you should easily find a CBD infused cup of coffee at a local coffee shop, most people like to brew a cup all by themselves. To that end, it may be easier for a lot of people depending on their locale to buy CBD tinctures or oil and add it to their regular coffee mug. You can also buy CBD coffee from offline/online vendor. IHF LLC CBD coffee is a great place to start.

A quick word of caution – Always start with small doses of CBD (preferably as little as 5 mg). Different users may experience a different range of effects with CBD. This may require a little experimentation in terms of dosage until you stumble upon that ‘sweet spot’ that works for you.

Final Thoughts

The quality of CBD whether it’s in the form of oil or tincture plays a huge role in determining the quality/range of effects you may experience from drinking CBD coffee. A low-grade product may make you believe the concoction doesn’t work. Only buy premium CBD oil and CBD coffee to perk up your favorite morning beverage.

Mindfulness and Acne “Stick with It” – A Mantra for Coping with Acne

“Mindfulness” is the word on everyone’s lips lately. The practice of being mindful reminds you to be aware of the here and now and stay present and focused. What’s in the past is gone. What’s in the future may be out of your control. When it comes to treating acne, however, what’s in the future may actually be something you can influence.

Acne can be troubling and difficult to ignore since there’s always a physical reminder that it’s still there and it’s often hard to hide. In turn, it can also affect your self-confidence and your self-esteem. To combat this issue, apply your mindfulness techniques to help you stick with the acne treatment regimen that your dermatologist may have recommended for you. Sometimes that may be challenging, because some acne medications may be irritating and leave your skin red, flaky and peeling, tempting you to be less than compliant. Altreno® (tretinoin) Lotion, 0.05% from Ortho Dermatologics, might help to make sticking with your treatment routine easier. Altreno® Lotion is the first and only tretinoin lotion, designed with women in mind, providing efficacy and tolerability with a once-daily dosing. Its elegant lotion formulation helps women achieve beautiful skin by working to treat their acne. Altreno® Lotion is a smart choice tretinoin because of its hydrating formulation (0.05% tretinoin) that fits seamlessly into a woman’s existing skincare regimen

Altreno® (tretinoin) Lotion, 0.05%

  • Delivered in an elegant lotion vehicle that spreads smoothly and absorbs quickly into the skin

  • Has the established efficacy of a tretinoin
  • Suitable across skin types
  • Can be used day or night, once daily application
  • A cash pay product
  • From the makers of Retin-A – Ortho Dermatologics

Practicing mindfulness may help you to achieve a greater sense of inner peace. Practicing mindfulness when it comes to taking care of your skin simply makes good sense. The better you feel about yourself, the more you can focus on everything else that comprises your personal “here and now.”

WANT TO LOOK YEARS YOUNGER?

THE BROW IS THE NEW FACELIFT CEO + FOUNDER OF WINK BROW BAR EXPLAINS WHY

As with most features on our face, our eyebrows change as we age, and not always for the better. One could say they become our “arch enemy” without the proper arsenal of tools and tricks.  They can become sparse, droop, turn grey, change color, length and thickness. To add insult to injury, aging eyebrows often cease to regrow, so a single overzealous tweezer session can leave you with almost nonexistent brows. The good news is, “all of these “ills” can be reversed with some skilled brow work, the right products and at home tips,” says Umbreen Sheikh who is the founder+ CEO of Wink Brow Bar/Salon with locations in New York and London as well as an eponymous line of eye and face products.

Shape

Umbreen says that, “Brows can visually lift or droop the face—they are defining attributes that complement not only your face but the way you want the world to see you. The shape of your brows plays a big part in the appearance of your overall look. You can appear younger by having a fuller brow. Thin brows typically age the face, so opt for fuller brow shapes and use makeup to make the brows appear fuller.”

Eyebrow Threading

Threading is the easiest way to shape your brows by a professional. They will help determine the best shape for your face and also make your brows defined and crisp. Threading is the best way to do your brows if you have sensitive skin or allergies to waxing products. Threading is also fast, so you will be in and out of your appointment in no time.

Pencil

If you have naturally thinner brows with less hair, consider filling in your brows to create a fuller look. Pencil is a better choice over other makeup such as pomades or waxes because pencil looks very natural and you can achieve a precise shape to the brow. Make sure to keep the pencil tip sharpened so that you can have complete control over your application.

Take the Tweezers out of your Hands

We’re all guilty of doing this at times. We’ll try to get the perfect arch and end up with eyebrows that are way too thin. The best thing to do is to hide your tweezers and leave the plucking to the professionals. I know, it’s hard to do especially in-between salon appointments, but your brows will thank you in the end.

Color

The eyebrow makeup color should match your brows and not the hair on your head. Matching the makeup color to your existing brow hairs will keep a youthful appearance. Don’t go too dark in color for the brows because darker colors will age you if you don’t have naturally dark brown hair.

Highlight

Another trick to use for your brows to help you appear younger is to highlight them. Use a lighter colored pencil or eyeshadow that’s ivory or beige to highlight the arch of your brow. This will make your brow appear lifted for a younger look. Also consider highlighting on top of the brow arch to further define the arch shape.

When Brow “Tails Fade at the Edges

Brows naturally thin at the outer edges (by your temples) first, but fading can also be the result of overplucking. “The tail of the brow is the part that sets off the arch, which makes eyes look youthful” says Umbreen. “Without it, eyes seem droopy and tired.” The Solution: Lengthen your brow tails with a pencil.

Trim

If your brow hairs are long in some spots, try to trim them with brow scissors. Trimming the brows will further enhance the shape and keep the brow hairs looking very groomed and in place for a youthful appearance.

Avoid Wax

In my opinion, threading is best for your brows, not waxing. I see a lot of people make a mistake with waxing. You shouldn’t be stripping your skin so close to the eyebrow with wax. It can make your skin soften earlier and make your skin wrinkle sooner.

Brush Out Your Brows

I don’t know why people don’t do this. Just brushing your brows changes the shape and stimulates growth. There’s [nothing] more stimulating than brushing your brows.

Lash Serums

If you have sparse or thin brow hairs, consider using a lash serum to help grow more hair for a fuller and younger style. All-natural castor oil or protein packed serums sold in stores can help strengthen your eyebrow hair. It may take a few months of daily application, but the results will be worth it. Stronger & fuller brow hairs mean less time filling in the brows with makeup for a fuller look! Here’s a great serum to try from Wink:  https://winkbrowbar.com/collections/our-products/products/flash-eye-lift-serum

ABOUT UMBREEN SHEIKH LICENSED COSMETOLOGIST

FOUNDER + CEO OF WINK BROW BAR

For London born Umbreen, beauty is in her blood.  Her mother was a huge influence, having attended cosmetology school and owning London Salons that encompassed all areas of beauty in addition to eyebrow threading, which was quite rare at the time.  Umbreen learned to “thread” brows at an early age. Umbreen jokes that her mother taught her, “The birds, the bees and the brows.” Growing up, Umbreen spent much of her time in her mother’s salons while also attending University at King’s College London and graduating with a degree in Biomedical Sciences.  After marrying in 2003, Umbreen moved to New York where she became PR Director of a niche magazine.  In 2005, Umbreen had a son, and in 2011 her daughter was born. After her children were in school, she decided to fulfill her lifelong passion for beauty, brows and product development.

While living in New York, she realized that there were no brow salons that catered to threading and focused on understanding face shapes and how to achieve the perfect brow shape in a way that did not damage the eye area.  Although many salons offered waxing, this was not a method Umbreen wished to pursue.  She was dismayed by existing salons that offered one size fits all, unhygienic, or painful brow/eyelash treatments.

As someone who learned the reigns of beauty and brows from an entrepreneurial mother, the concept of women’s “Embrowerment” was essential to Umbreen. In 2014, she developed the concept for Wink. Today, her empire includes three Wink Brows Bars in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn and one in London.  For those who can’t make it to the salon, Wink has an eponymous line of brow, lash and facial products available for purchase online.

Philanthropic pursuits play a significant role in Umbreen’s life. She is a committee member of “Developments in Literacy” that educates 27,000 girls in Pakistan. She is also a Lotus Circle Advisor for The Asia Foundation a non -profit international organization that works across Asia advancing the rights and opportunities for women through their empowerment program.

Umbreen resides in New York with her financier husband and two children.

Reasons to add faux fur to your wardrobe collection

They might call it an imitation but there is a great reason as to why faux fur is the trend to have and follow. Although people think there are misconceptions of the faux leather there is a lot of beauty with having one.Faux fur outwear is glamorous and a keen alternative to the animal fur leather. It is an awesome fashion statement to have when adorned for your day to day activities. By blending with the right color and styling it with the look you aim to achieve shows how you can plan your attire around your faux fur piece. Break out of your comfort zone and dress around this piece and look elegant and splendid in your outfit whether you are dressed up or in casual attire. Here are some reasons to have at least one or two faux furs in your collection.

It is timeless

Who does not want a timeless piece of faux fur apparel? In comparison to real fur, faux fur ages beautifully so the more you wear it the glamorous it appears. This is a great boost to your appearance and a great reason to add it to your wardrobe collection. Due to its resilience, and able to withstand harsh climate. Faux leather that is designed well does not wear out easily unlike the real fur which when dyed fades out in a span of one year. Buying faux fur also allows you to upgrade your style without putting holes in your pocket. It also recreates your look and gives you a fresh fashion worthy appearance to your entire outfit.

It’s trendy

Secondly, shaggy faux fur outwear is a fashion statement piece that is trendy. New York fashion week designers and those who attend the event have embraced this trend and do not shy away from showcasing faux fur as a must-have fashionable piece. With such a parade for faux fur, retailers have enough of this trendy piece to be able to flow with this favored fashion piece. Whether it is brightly colored, patterned or plain keep it simple and look classic in your faux coat. When dressing this piece ensures it stands out from the rest of the attire so as you do not lose the lush and eye-catching element that it portrays. Avoid bright-colored pants, snakeskin, or pleather that can deviate the attention from your leather.

Easy to clean

It is important to realize that faux fur is made from synthetic fiber such as polyester that is easy to take care of and clean as well. This fact makes it easier if there is a need to spot clean incase of a spill of any kind. Depending on the type, it can be hand or machine washed on a gentle cycle so as not to damage the fibers. Before cleaning check for any repairs, loose linings, and worn fastenings all that should be examined before it is cleaned. You can have it conditioned if you prefer that process. However, the process is not damaging just that it is efficient in restoring the luster and shine before it is stored.

Simple storage When you compare faux fur to the real fur. Real fur, has a complicated procedure before and during storage. Due to the various fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels of where you live. The real fur has to be kept in cold storage which you are charged for, bringing in another expense that is unnecessary with the faux fur. These procedures help to maximize its lifespan and give it a continuous rich look. All these professional storage and conditioning procedures are a great reason to add faux leather to your collection. Mainly because your faux fur coats and sweaters can be stored with ease at home in a cool and dry place in different seasons and not have any damages.

It is an everyday wear

Faux leather is not only blended in with other garments to boost their finish. It can be perfect daily wear that has no limits on how to pair or take care of it. In consideration of your length whether it is a cropped jacket, an average size shaggy faux fur outerwear, long length for formal wear or short length for a more casual look it is easy to dress it. It can also be added to your garment as a fur-lined leather biker garment with fur trim or a lightweight sheer to the sleeves and depending on the look you choose it is only in rare cases that it can be mismatched, for example, a long dress with a short faux fur coat can look mismatched. The color too is important to compliment your entire outfit and neutral colors are best for that fresh look that boosts your confidence levels.

It is Eco-friendly

The great debate of whether faux fur is environment-friendly has always had varied opinions. However, many designers have come up with various ways to recycle to make faux fur. For instance, some designers have recycled plastic, plants and even denim. Since faux leather is best if it stays for a long time the fact that it can be recycled is as important to know it can be worn over the years in a similar or another form. Hence faux fur is the most ecological choice since it is made from recycled materials. This is a great way to bring out the furry aspect with no killing. In today’s world with all the investment and research being carried out for a safe environment has forced even the trendy fashion shows, magazines to embrace the faux fur as a go-to choice to trend on.

Given these points, get faux fur to your wardrobe collection and be ready to trend and make a statement in it. Disregard the many misconceptions and slay on this attire well-matched and accessorized. However, it is important to note that fur is damaged by heat and if it continuously gets wet as well.

Is Your Acne Heating Up This Summer?

Why is Acne Worse for Some in Warm Weather, But Not for Others?

Acne 411

Some Little Known Facts That May Surprise You!

Most people associate acne with teenagers, but in reality acne can occur at almost any time in one’s life, from early childhood to post menopause. With the click of a button, the internet seems to offer an endless supply of information for treating acne so it’s understandable how people can be confused between what is a myth and what is a fact.

Here is the 411 as it pertains to acne and age, acne and location and an acne treatment:

FROM TWO WEEKS TO EIGHTY YEARS

If you’re a new mom you may be surprised to discover that babies can develop what is known as infantile or baby acne and it may develop on a newborn’s skin. Baby acne can occur anywhere on the face, but usually appears on the cheeks, nose and forehead. This condition is common and, thankfully, temporary. There’s little you can do to prevent baby acne and it usually clears up on its own, without scarring.1

Then, of course, there is teenage acne, mostly thought to be brought on by hormone fluctuations during puberty. There are many theories about the role of diet, stress and genetics, but no definitive evidence yet to fully explain acne. Fortunately, today’s wide array of lasers can help adults treat some of the scars this kind of acne often leaves behind.

Finally, there is adult acne which most people don’t think of when they think about acne. Adult acne mostly affects women over the age of 25 and can still cause problems many years past menopause.2

WHAT TO DO

There are two important rules of thumb when it comes to treating acne in adolescents and adults.  Consult with a dermatologist and stick to the treatment regimen you are prescribed. A very effective prescription drug called tretinoin is often an extremely useful tool in helping to combat adult acne.  Traditionally, tretinoins can be irritating to the skin, making compliance an issue. However, there is a tretinoin available in a lotion formulation that many patients are finding to be both effective and tolerable.

Altreno® (tretinoin) Lotion, 0.05% from Ortho Dermatologics is a treatment for acne, including for adults for whom acne can be a persistent condition; one they thought they left behind in their teenage years.2 This can be especially problematic for women, because nearly four times as many women suffer from adult acne than men.3 Altreno® Lotion is the first and only tretinoin lotion, designed with women in mind, providing efficacy and tolerability with a once-daily dosing. Its elegant lotion formulation helps women achieve beautiful skin by working to treat their acne. Altreno® Lotion is a smart choice tretinoin because of its hydrating formulation (0.05% tretinoin) that fits seamlessly into a woman’s existing skincare regimen.

NAVIGATING ACNE’S GEOGRAPHY

An interesting fact about acne is that at different stages in one’s life acne may appear in different areas of the face and the body.  Infantile acne is apt to be seen on the cheeks, nose and forehead. The same is true for teenage acne, striking mostly in the “T-Zone.” Teenagers and young adults may also experience acne on the chest and back. But, acne that occurs after the age of 25 sometimes appears in the “U-Zone.” This is characterized by breakouts on the jaw line, the chin and the neck.

Regardless of one’s age, there are a variety of acne treatment options. People who suffer with acne should turn to their dermatologist who can help determine which treatment may be right for them,
