Finding Confidence in Color………..

Reflecting back on some conversations that I have had with some beauty and fashion experts in the past few months, I can’t help but to recall many topics that I have discussed with Peter Lamas. Peter, in addition to being a leading beauty guru to the Hollywood and the fashion elite for the past couple of decades, is also a bestselling author on beauty and is the founder of Peter Lamas Products, beauty products that contain healthy, natural and chemical–free ingredients while delivering high-performance.  Peter is very passionate about the things he has learned in the beauty industry and often is featured as a guest speaker. His experience and knowledge is boundless and I for one love hearing it! (for more on Peter, see www.peterlamas.com)

One of the many topics that Peter and I discussed was confidence.  (You can see more on my earlier blog with Peter on Elegance Being Back In-Style). The clientele he has had the privilege of working with over the years, had that level of confidence. It made me wonder. Granted some people are lucky enough to be brought up learning that sense of elegance and confidence.  What about those of us that need to learn these characteristics as adults? Is it possible?

You have to admire the woman who can walk into a room, where her confidence is evident to all of those who are present. How do you make that woman you? The good news is that you can learn to become more confident.  It does take work, practice and determination! Unfortunately, it isn’t a put those wonder woman bracelets together, say Alacazam, and poof—-you are a highly confident and elegant woman!  If only it were that easy!!  Some more good news is that you can take it in small steps, and each one of those steps will help you obtain that confident stride.

A baby step that I recommend? When you find the colors that work for you, make them a wardrobe staple.  Incorporate that color into as many pieces as possible! Most of us know the colors that look best on us, and we also learn them by wearing the colors.  When people keep complementing you on your outfit, chances are it is a color for you.

When you watch most toddlers, you will see them clutching their blankets.  Linus, in Peanuts, certainly embodies the blanket provides safety and security, and in that same sense, you wearing your colors will provide you with that same sense of security.  You know that you look good, and that bolsters confidence.  People will tell you that you look good…..it helps raise the confidence level. If you have to meet a potential client, have a job interview, have a date…..wear those colors……knowing that you look elegant will do wonders for calming those nerves!

I have a friend whose wardrobe I covet! She owns lots of designer dresses, couture pieces, and is tres chic! I couldn’t compete with her sense of style if my life depended on it.  But, when we were together at an event recently, I noticed that my thrift store purchase in my perfect color received more complements than her killer designer duds. One reason perhaps is that when the wardrobe is a piece of art, it is all about the dress. When the wardrobe is in your color, it becomes all about you…….. and that is a great feeling!

66ºNorth Heats up a Cold January Night with the launch of their Winter 2011 Collection

On January 5, 2011 high fashion merged with sports and leisure as Iceland-based outerwear clothing brand 66ºNorth debuted its Fall/Winter 2011 Men’s and Women’s Collection at an exclusive launch party attended by the crème de la crème of New York’s fashion media and experts.

Keeping in line with the Nordic theme of 66ºNorth’s clothing, the event took place at NYC’s Scandinavia House where guests were treated to cocktails provided by Reyka Vodka, the first vodka distilled in Iceland. A select number of VIP guests as well as members of national and international media were present to celebrate the launch of 66ºNorth’s latest collection. Notable celebrity sightings included Josh Strickland, star of E! Channel’s hit reality series “Holly’s World,” as well as Reichen Lehmkuhl and Rodiney Santiago from Logo’s “The A-List: New York.”

One of Iceland’s oldest manufacturing companies, 66ºNorth is an expert in the creation of specialized clothing for use in the toughest conditions on land and sea. However, what distinguishes 66ºNorth from their competitors on the outerwear market is their ability to think outside the norm and continuously mix the latest fashion with high quality and comfort.

As guests of the fashion show were able to see for themselves, the brand’s latest line of clothing was no exception from the rule. The collection featured an affluent variety of parkas and jackets in all colors of the rainbow designed to embrace the body, thus keeping it warm without accumulating unnecessary bulk around the torso. Rather than adding features one doesn’t really need, the designer team behind 66ºNorth incorporated only what is necessary for peak performance, creating sleek and sophisticated, yet comfortable, pieces.

The Fall/Winter 2011 line also included cable-knit sweaters in grey and beige, as well as trekking pants and tights made of abrasion resistant fabrics and designed to accommodate a high range of movement. Finishing up the looks were 66ºNorth’s signature wintry accessories. Embroidery and detailing abound, the brand’s wide variety of hats and mittens offers a unique completion to any look or style and guarantees warmth in severe winter weather.

Following the fashion show, each guest received a luxurious goody bag filled with gifts provided by Blue Lagoon Iceland spa products, Icelandic Glacial water, IcelandAir and Reyka Vodka. In addition, each bag contained a hat or a pair of mittens courtesy of 66ºNorth as a token of their appreciation to their honorary guests.

Just Go With It

One of the most anticipated comedy movie releases this winter is Just Go With It opening this February.  The movies stellar cast includes Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, and Brooklyn Decker. At the center of the movie is a love triangle of sorts with Sandler, Aniston and Decker.  Sandler, playing a plastic surgeon, has always pretended to be married, in order to avoid having a commitment to any women.  Then he meets Decker, the girl of his dreams……trouble arise when Decker discovers a wedding ring in his pocket. Sandler then enlists Aniston, his assistant, to play his soon to be ex-wife. Soon  her kids get involved and the lie just snowballs from there.

Joining the cast is Nicole Kidman, whose role in the movie has been kept under wraps! In this month’s Harper’s Bazaar, set to hit the newsstands January 18th, Jennifer Aniston interviews her co-star Nicole Kidman. Kidman, including gracing the cover and photo stories reveals to Aniston her thoughts on marriage, motherhood and the joy of lightening up!  It is wonderful to see these two actresses as they mature and become better with age.  It will be interesting to hear how Kidman is adjusting to life in Nashville with husband Keith Urban.

Staying Naturally Fresh…..

In addition to really becoming conscious of what I am putting into my body, another resolution is to become more aware of what I am putting on my body.  Try to only use products that are pure and natural.  And while I would like to say that my reasoning is for the environment, (and a large portion of my reasoning is based on being eco-friendly) there is a small part of my rational based solely on selfish purposes.  I been noticing that I have become more sensitive to chemicals, my skin will have allergic reactions and it will affect my lungs.  So, there is a need for me to find products that are pure, free of harsh chemicals, cruelty–free and effective.  I promise to pass on as many products as I find…..

First up, let’s talk deodorants.  I have tried the natural ones years before, and while I liked the concept, I unfortunately didn’t find them to be that effective. So back I went to the conventional ones.  Sweating through a silk blouse at a business meeting was not an option for me.  It had to work! Then, either with the years of use, or the fact that the deodorant changed its ingredients and I had an allergic reaction to one, I began noticing that I had small lumps under my arms.  Needless to say, I freaked out and immediately saw my doctor, expecting to hear the worst! While my doctor praised my swift response, he pointed out that what was happening was that my sweat glands were becoming clogged, I was developing cysts and I needed to change to a deodorant that was not going to clog my pores.

Now, most people think antiperspirants and deodorants are the same thing, but they are not. Deodorants are considered a cosmetic product while antiperspirants are regulated by the FDA because they are classified as a drug due to the effect they have on the body. Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores with powerful aluminum chemicals so that they cannot release sweat. Deodorants work by neutralizing the smell of the sweat and by antiseptic action against bacteria. Deodorants are preferable because they don’t interfere with sweating, a natural cooling process.

There are many questions about the ingredients in many health and beauty products. Consumer advocacy groups continue to voice concerns over questions regarding common health and beauty products, including deodorant and antiperspirant. Certain studies indicate potential health risks associated with aluminum compounds found in many antiperspirants. Similar studies find like-risks with parabens found in some deodorants. Both have been somewhat linked to serious illnesses, including breast cancer.

Having that scare was an eye-opener for me! I had to become more aware of the ingredients in products that I was using.  Fortunately, finding the solution to my deodorant issues was easy.  I had samples of Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystals to try. The Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystals are made of mineral salts which are pure and natural, fragrance free, non-staining and provide up to 24-hour, hypoallergenic protection against body and foot odor. Being in salt, and not in metal form, the crystal deodorant contains no harmful aluminums that can clog pores. Unlike antiperspirants, mineral salts allow the natural process of perspiration, rather than trying to mask your bodily smells. They are extremely effective and I feel a peace of mind knowing that I don’t have God knows how many chemicals being absorbed into my body. The Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal brands are highly recommended by Oncologists, Allergists and Dermatologists to their patients; particularly because their ingredients are free of harmful aluminum containments.

In addition to the wonderful folks at Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystals making a fabulous product that is free from health and environmental concerns, is cruelty free and effective, these people give back! Like so many other families around the world, they have been affected some way by Breast Cancer.  Not only do they donate a percentage of proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for the Cure, they supply both Doctors and Cancer Treatment Centers with trial sized samples for patients to test out. Please check out their website (www.natfreshdeo.com) to request free samples of their products.

New Year’s Resolution-Eating Healthier!

Happy New Year!

And let those resolutions begin!  Yes, I am someone who does resolutions.  The good thing about aging however is that I’ve gotten smarter about making resolutions! I no longer wait until the New Year to enact the changes that I want in my life.  I also make resolutions that are more realistic, and do not beat myself up if I slip.  I allow for what I call the 90% rule.  Whatever resolution I make doesn’t have to an “all or nothing” rule.  As long as I manage to do it 90% of time, and become more conscious of what I am trying to achieve, I am happy.

One resolution is to eat healthier.  As both Ellen Miller and Melinda Lombardo have attested to, your diet is reflected in not only how you look, but is crucial in maintaining good skin and overall health.  I have certainly gotten more aware of what I put into my body, and even though I may try my best, I realize that there will be times I won’t always be able to eat as healthily as I like.

One product to help me keep me on my path to eating healthier? MDR (Medical Doctors Research) Fitness Tabs for Women.   MDR Fitness tabs were developed by Medical Doctors based on the latest research.  For superior results, nutrients are specifically combined to enhance bioavailability. A leader in vitamin technology, MDR was the first to offer AM and PM dosages to double the body’s chances for absorption and effectiveness. The AM/PM formula allows double the absorption of key vitamins, minerals, and trace elements.  This is the core of any supplement program to support overall health, energy production, immunity, brain function, healthy skin, hair, nails, vision, and cardiovascular health.  No mega doses. Just the right amounts of the right nutrients at the right time.

Part of what makes MDR unique is that they constantly monitor nutrition research and update their formulas accordingly.  Each nutrient in their formula is selected for the highest level of purity, potency and efficiency of nutrient yield.  They contain no Vitamin K-1, which means people on blood thinners or taking daily aspirin can enjoy the benefit of a multivitamin without worrying about it conflicting with their medication.  They are also gluten-free. For more information on the fitness tabs and all of its ingredients, see www.fitnesstabs.com .

One drink that Dr. Oz swears is his “green drink”. This drink will help jumpstart your mornings. It is a high fiber, low calorie breakfast drink. It will also go a long way into making sure that you are incorporating more vegetables into your diet and is rich in vitamins.

Ingredients
2 cups spinach
2 cups cucumber
1 head of celery
1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
1 bunch parsley
2 apples
Juice of 1 lime
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a blender. This makes approximately 28-30 ounces, or 3-4 servings.

I’ve doctored mine a bit.  I also add almond milk and cinnamon. Love it! Between my MDR AM/PM Fitness Tabs for Women and my “green juice” I should be able to keep one of my resolutions!
