ADVICE FROM THE PROS

The Smart Woman’s Guide to Liposuction
By Dr. Marisa Lawrence

Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or suction-lipectomy, is the surgical removal of localized or regional fat deposits from designated areas of the body. The goal of liposuction is to create a more proportional and sculpted body by permanently removing fat cells. It is not a method of weight loss or a substitute for proper diet and exercise. The most frequently treated areas in men are the “love handles,” breasts, abdomen, and neck. In women they include the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, knees, jowls and chin. The amount of fat removed varies by doctor, method, and patient but is typically less than 5 pounds. Although many patients do notice an improvement in the appearance of the dimpled skin that appears on the thighs, hips, and buttocks after fat cells are removed, liposuction is not a treatment for cellulite.

Liposuction has become one of the fastest, most effective, and safest cosmetic surgery procedures available today. Liposuction is the only scientifically proven method for removing fat cells permanently. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery, liposuction has been the top overall surgical procedure performed since 1997. It can be performed alone or in conjunction with other cosmetic or medically necessary procedures. Good candidates for liposuction surgery are healthy, within 30% of their ideal weight, have realistic expectations for their surgery, and have skin with good elasticity.

Although there are several surgical techniques that can be used to perform lipoplasty, in general the physician inserts a hollow stainless steel tube called a cannula through a small incision in the patient’s body to break up the fat cells and extract them from the targeted area with the assistance of a powerful suction device. Prior to aspirating fat, the physician usually injects large volumes of a saline solution that contains a local anesthetic and epinephrine into the fatty areas to be treated. The addition of epinephrine to the solution helps shrink capillaries and virtually eliminates surgical blood loss. This “tumescent” solution partially liquefies the fat and helps separate the fat from the overlying skin and underlying muscle fascia. The tumescent technique for liposuction is unquestionably the safest form of liposuction, provided the volume of fat removed and the number of areas treated during a single surgery are not excessive.

The size of the liposuction cannula used can influence the smoothness of the skin after liposuction. The use of large cannulas (outside diameter greater than 3 millimeters) is associated with a greater risk of irregularities and depressions in the skin. Some surgeons prefer large cannulas because it allows liposuction to be done more quickly. However, in the realm of liposuction maximum speed is not a criterion for excellence. Microcannulas with a diameter less than 3 millimeters allow fat to be removed in a smoother and more uniform fashion. A powerized cannula that moves back and forth through the fat tissue in rapid motion is also available. With Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL) less force is required to remove unwanted fat, making the procedure easier on both patients and surgeons.

In the late 1990s, ultrasound was introduced to facilitate the fat removal by first liquefying it using ultrasonic energy. Although Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) successfully improved the volume of fat aspirated and the quality of skin tightening following the procedure, it increased procedure time, required larger incisions, caused skin injuries and fluid collections. To avoid these complications ultrasonic energy was applied from outside the body in External Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (XUAL or EUAL) but this was found to be ineffective. The latest, third generation ultrasonic liposuction technique is called VASER Liposuction and was approved for use in 2002. The VASER system’s ultrasonic energy is thought to selectively liquefy the fat cells while preserving nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. However, its proper use requires a steep learning curve and skin injuries and fluid collections continue to be reported.

Lipodissolve, also known as mesotherapy, injection lipolysis, or lipostabil, involves injections of a chemical solution that typically includes phosphatidylcholine, a soybean extract. Other ingredients may include the bile derivative deoxycholate, enzymes and plant extracts. During lipodissolve treatments the doctor injects the chemical solution into small pockets of fat causing the fat to dissolve over the course of three weeks. Several treatments, four to six weeks apart are required for optimal results. The liquefied fat may be absorbed into the bloodstream and filtered through the liver but to date no definite studies have demonstrated where the fat travels and how it may affect organs. At this time lipodissolve is experimental and is not approved by the FDA. Reported side effects include pain, scarring, and skin irregularities.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction, introduced in 2007, is one of the newest and most promising techniques in permanent fat removal. SmartLipoTM was the first laser-assisted liposuction system. Using the device, a 1064-nmNd: YAG laser is delivered through a 1-2 mm cannula below the skin to liquefy fat while coagulating blood vessels. Similar to other techniques of liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction requires the use of tumescent solution prior to lipolysis, and standard liposuction to aspirate the liquefied fat. The CoolLipoTM 1320 nm laser was next marketed designed exclusively for fat removal in small areas such as the neck and chin.

This year SlimLipoTM - the newest and most advanced laser liposuction technology thus far – was purchased for use at Northside Hospital. SLIM stands for Selective Laser Induced Melting; this new laser wavelength of 920 nm selectively melts fat three times more effectively the Smart LipoTM and twice as effectively as the CoolLipoTM liposuction technology. It is also 5 times more selectively absorbed by blood. Therefore the SlimLipoTM body sculpting laser dissolves fat and prevents bleeding much more effectively than any other liposuction unit available. For the patient this means gentler, more thorough fat removal, less bleeding and bruising, and a much quicker recovery. The system also contains a 980 nm laser wavelength which is highly absorbed by the dermis, the deep layer of the skin that controls skin tightening. When used in conjunction with the 920nm laser wavelength, there is improved skin tightening after liposuction.

Normal activity can be resumed within 24 hours. Depending on the extent of liposuction, patients are generally able to return to work or school between two days and two weeks. A compression garment is worn for two-four weeks. Temporary side effects of surgery may include swelling, numbness of the skin and soreness in the areas treated that dissipate over several weeks. As they do, new contours and enhanced self-image are developed. The results of liposuction are maintained as long as weight remains the same and a healthy lifestyle is practiced.

A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the first step to learn how liposuction can slim and reshape specific areas of the body. For more information please contact The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at www.surgery.org or email questions to md@cosmeticsurgery.cc

Tina O's Tips to Jazz Up Jeans

1.. A fun way to dress up any jeans and denim shirt is to put on a big pair of sunglasses and wear a long chiffon scarf around your head and around your neck where you tie it off. If you happen to have a convertible. you can let the scarf blow in the wind behind you! People will mistake you for an old screen siren!

2.. A pair of jeans can really be jazzed up with a cute pair of strappy heels and a chiffon scarf used as a belt! Most men love a woman in strappy heels because a naked foot can be so sexy!

3.. Have trouble walking in heels? Throw on your favorite flats with your favorite pair of jeans and put your hair up on top of your head into a ponytail. Grab some big hoop earrings and take that long chiffon or silk scarf and tie it around your neck and mid section so it becomes a cute halter-top!

4.. Jean shorts are adorable but some gals don't really have the tiny bottom to pull them off. Try wrapping a chiffon or silk scarf around your bottom with the tie in the front. It adds color and hides your bottom. Then just throw on a fun t-shirt!

5.. I mention chiffon and silk scarves a lot because they are perfect for a lot of purposes. Try tying one to your purse before dashing out of the door. It dresses up your purse and then you are ready to put it on your head in case you find yourself in a convertible or in the wind. Also, it can work in a pinch as a nice bathing suit wrap!

6.. If you have to paint a room in your house, take an old pair of jeans and wear them while painting. Don't be afraid of getting paint splatters on them- that is the whole point. The more paint you get on them, the better! They will look like a work of art and friends will think you bought them that way. In fact, invite your gal pals over and everyone can paint in their jeans while creating fun new colorful jeans!

7.. Take those skinny jeans and roll them up to Capri length. Add in an adorable t-shirt and a scarf around the neck or again as a belt and you will have a cute, classic look!

8.. Cowboy boots with a comfortable pair of jeans are always great especially when paired with a fitted vest. Wearing it with a sleeveless t-shirt will help to keep a perfect silhouette from top to bottom. You got it now, Urban Cowgirl!

Dr. Wu Helps Hire a Makeup Artist!

Even if you're not a celebrity, there are certain occasions in life when you want to look your absolute best. Whether it's for your wedding, a class reunion, a professional image for your new Web site, or even if you just need a sexy photo for an online dating profile, hiring a professional makeup artist can be totally worth it. I learned my lesson years ago when I did my own makeup for a television interview. I ended up looking so pale and sickly that my mother called and asked me if I was ill! Now, whenever I do a TV appearance or need to get photos taken, I have my makeup done professionally.

  • To find a makeup artist, ask for referrals from friends who have been pleased with their makeup. Hair stylists and wedding or event photographers are also likely to know who does good work.
  • When you get in touch with the makeup artist, ask about his or her professional experience, what type of work she or he does, and what kind of rate you can expect. Ask to see photos of their work or speak to recent clients.
  • Depending on the type of event you're getting primped for, you may have other questions. For example, is the makeup artist available to work on other members of your wedding party or will she or he stick around for touch-ups at a photo shoot or TV interview? If so, be sure to ask about additional costs.
  • Always do a trial run. You'd never wait until the day of a big event to put your dress on for the first time, would you? A trial run will help you and your makeup artist nail down the right look and prevent any ghastly surprises.

    Help for a toothache

New York City dentist Dr. Michael Entin, DDS has developed easy-to-follow tips to help patients with toothaches and other emergencies until they are able to see a dentist. Below, he shares those with us.

What can you do to alleviate a toothache?
  • If the toothache is caused by trapped food, try to remove the food as soon as you can. Gargling with warm water and flossing should dislodge the food or whatever is causing the pain. If that doesn’t work, try gargling with a warm salt water solution or dab clove oil on the aching tooth. The salt water is great for controlling inflammation and providing quick pain relief while clove oil, which can be found in most drugstores, has known bacteria-fighting properties along with remarkable numbing powers.
  • For another home remedy, there is numbing power in cooled peppermint tea. Swish, and then swallow if you like the flavor. "People can try putting some ice on the area, but the temperature of the ice could send them over the edge,” cautions Dr. Entin. “Most challenging are toothaches that stem from inside a tooth,” he adds. But in cases where a lost filling or a broken tooth is causing the pain, "caulking" the sore tooth with softened chewing gum can ease the pain - covering the sensitive area until it can be repaired.

  • What can be done to ease the pain of a canker sore?
  • A salt water rinse is also very effective in treating the pain associated with canker sores but by no means is it the only option. To begin with, instead of rinsing the inside of your mouth, try dabbing some salt directly to the wound, it will sting but the curative properties are potent. Other options include making a paste with baking soda and water and applying it directly to the sore; drinking cranberry juice, which is a pain reliever and canker sore healer; dabbing honey with just a bit of turmeric on the canker or moistening a tea bag and placing it directly on the canker sore. The tannic acid in the tea will help dry it out.
  • What should you do if you've knocked out a tooth - whether from a blow, a fall or accident?
  • Shake off debris (rinsing or scrubbing could remove important periodontal ligament), place it in a container of milk or back in its socket and try to reach the dentist within 30 minutes. “Unfortunately, not all teeth can be saved,” cautions Dr. Entin. “Alternative methods, such as a bridge or implants, may need to be considered."

  • What should you do if you've broken a tooth?
  • If you've lost the broken piece, the best thing to do is immediately go to the dentist. In the time between the break and when you can get to a dentist, "caulking" the sore tooth with softened, sugar-free chewing gum can ease the pain by covering the sensitive area until it can be repaired as a temporary measure. If you’re able to hold on to the broken piece, definitely do so. According to Dr. Entin, “even if the piece can't be bonded back to the original tooth, it can be used to help re-create the look of that tooth.”

  • If something (food, other foreign matter) is wedged between your teeth, should you try to dislodge it?
  • Gentle flossing or brushing is fine, but if the object does not respond to that treatment and the surrounding gum begins to swell, make an appointment with your dentist. A bit of broken filling or chipped enamel can throw your bite off and make you panic. Popcorn husks are one of the worst problems and occasionally need to be removed by a dentist.

  • What should you do if you lose a filling or crown?
  • If you lose a filling, it's not worth saving. However, just cover the hole with temporary material; do not try to put the old filling back in the tooth. If you lose a crown, you'll want to try and salvage it (you can use Temparin or Dentemp, available in pharmacies, to put the crown back in place until you can reach a dentist). “In either case, visit the dentist as soon as possible,” says Dr. Entin. "Many people don't realize that when a filling falls out, there's a reason for that, whether it's a cracked tooth or more severe. You need to see a dentist."

    7 Summer Sun-savers for Kids
    By Dr. Jim Sears

If you’re heading to the beach this summer with kids in tow – read this first! America’s favorite TV pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears loads you up with cool advice and unpacks harmful myths that can be real scorchers.

    A Minor Detail
Did you know that about 80% of a person’s lifetime sun damage happens before they turn 18 years old? A child’s skin is especially sensitive and can burn very quickly.

    Screen Test
Keep in mind that most sunscreens don’t start working until 30 minutes AFTER they are applied. Read the label. Most good baby sunscreens will contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide – both ingredients have an immediate blocking effect. Zinc tends to be nice and thick and what you traditionally see on a lifeguard’s nose.

    Don’t be Rash
I have found that a child is more likely to develop an irritating rash from sunscreen if applied to hot, sweaty skin. Better to apply in the morning BEFORE heading out into the hot sun. Of course, don’t forget to RE-APPLY every few hours, and after being in the water.

    Lasting Appeal
Now, to the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) question. Parents often ask me if 30 is better than 15. These numbers typically tell you how long a sunscreen will protect you. SPF 15 and 30 can both be great sunscreens, but 30 will last longer. Of course, 45 and 60 longer still.

    Water Wait
Possibly the biggest myth-conception floating out there is the one about how long kids should get back into the water after eating. Here’s the answer: There’s no time restriction. None. It is just fine to go back into the water for typical play anytime after eating. It is true that a full stomach will divert some blood away from muscles in order to aid in digestion, but this would only be an issue if someone were doing some vigorous swimming – like swimming across a mile wide lake.

    Foil with Vinegar
If you want to be a super hero parent, pack a small spray bottled filled with vinegar. This is great for flushing out jellyfish stings. DON’T use fresh water – it will make it worse. The lifeguard station will also have this handy.

    Made in the Shades
Parents often overlook packing sunglasses for their kids. Of course, you wouldn’t forget YOUR sunglasses, but it’s just as important to shield your child’s eyes from those damaging UV rays! In fact, kids’ eyes are MORE susceptible to sun damage than adults. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but it is important the lenses block 100% of ultra violet (UV) rays. Also, when choosing sunglasses, darker lenses aren’t necessarily better. A lens that’s too dark will cause your child’s pupils to dilate and allow more light into the eye. When selecting the right pair for your child, try putting the glasses up to YOUR eyes and pick a lens that is just dark enough that you don’t squint while in the sunlight.

Dr. Elizabeth Hale on Skin Safety

Dr. Elizabeth Hale is a clinical associate professor of dermatology at NYU and a dermatological surgeon. She runs marathons in her spare time! Dr. Hale has some great advice for athletes (and others) so that they are sure to enjoy the outdoors the skin-safe way.

Without proper protection, skin may be at risk for overexposure from the sun. Remember, UV rays are present year-round. Additionally, athletes’ skin can be more susceptible to sun damage so doctors advise anyone spending time outdoors, especially when running or playing sports outside, to take precautions to protect his or her skin.

  • Convenience is Key. To help remember to apply sunscreen, keep a bottle in your medicine cabinet next to your toothbrush. Throw another bottle in your bag with your athletic gear, so applying before workouts becomes as routine as tying your shoelaces.

  • Get in Gear. You wouldn’t run without proper footwear or show up to practice without the right equipment, so make sure to choose a sunscreen that is durable enough to work as hard as you do. COPPERTONE SPORT® with Replenishing Antioxidants helps fortify skin’s natural antioxidant defenses, which can be depleted during sun exposure, especially during physical activity. The product is also ultrasweatproof, which means that it stays on even when you’re working your hardest, and won’t run into eyes and sting.

  • Be an Early Bird. If you schedule your outdoor workout during the early morning, not only will you avoid the day’s most powerful UV rays but you will also be energized and satisfied knowing you got a healthy start.

  • Disguise your Eyes. UV radiation can damage the eyes and the skin around them, so remember to wear your shades. To provide the best protection for your eyes, your sunglasses should block out 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Choose wrap-around frames, which stay on during active exercise. www.laserskinsurgery.com

Brighten Your Appearance, Brighten Your Smile

As the sunny days of summer rapidly approach and we rush to the gym to take off those extra 10 pounds to look fit and fab for the beach or pool, many overlook a critical way to brighten your appearance, build your self confidence and exude a look of health and wellness…enhancing your smile. While having the right wardrobe, accessories and hair style for summer all play a role in a bright appearance, surveys reveal that one of the first things people notice about others is their smile. According to Dr. Timothy Chase, a 15-year veteran of cosmetic dentistry, a healthy smile, white teeth and healthy gums can take 10 years off your appearance.

Dr. Chase, D.M.D., is a practicing partner at SmilesNY, a leading cosmetic dentistry practice in New York City. He has made it his life’s work to educate patients about the significance of possessing a healthy smile as a critical indicator of overall health and wellness.

Dr. Chase advocates that cosmetic dentistry should offer solutions starting with the least invasive solution to enhance a patient’s appearance. While many consumers are quick to ask for dental veneers, in numerous situations, whitening or simple orthodontics could dramatically improve their smile and last a lifetime.

Here are Dr. Chase’s recommendations for procedures that can be performed by a cosmetic dentist that will take years off your appearance and will build confidence through obtaining a healthy smile. “While many people may be aware of key cosmetic dentistry procedures, there have been recent developments in numerous areas that will allow more people access to the very best in cosmetic dentistry technology,” he says.
    • Whitening: Having a healthy and white smile is a significant confidence booster and a great indication of health and wellness. Having white teeth can be achieved by home whitening kits – but a trip to your dentist guarantees you a faster better result. And there is good news for those who have previously been discouraged from whitening because of having sensitive teeth that were painful to whiten. There are currently advances in whitening formulas available at you dentist to reduce discomfort and sensitivity in whitening.
    • Straight teeth: Invisalign remains a key and unobtrusive way for adults to attain straight teeth and a brilliant smile. There is hope for those who have had such misaligned teeth that they weren’t formerly candidates for the Invisalign process. There are now a new series of aligners that have been created to correct even severely rotated teeth. Invisalign can be used on even more complex cases now.
    • Veneers: Veneers are a great way to create a healthy and youthful smile. In the past people worried about the amount of tooth that needed to be removed to fit the veneers, but today’s better porcelain and Dr Chase’s 3-D model technology allows for less tooth reduction and better lifelike looking porcelain that lasts longer.
“Brightening your appearance by creating a healthy smile is not as daunting a task as people think,” says Chase – but above all, he advocates for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. “My first priority is to give full consideration to a patient’s existing teeth and gums, emphasizing the importance of good oral care,” he added.

The primary service offered by Dr. Chase and his colleagues is Smile Design, an array of preventative and restorative services including: teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, invisible braces, cosmetic bonding, tooth colored fillings, porcelain crowns, bridges, dental implants, periodontal services, full-mouth restoration, TMJ therapy and sports dentistry.

Dr. Connelly has appeared on CBS' The Doctors, BETTER TV, FOX News and more. www.drconnelly.com

Here are some tips from Dr. Connelly for keeping up a fabulous smile...

In the shower: Stop stains and tartar buildup when you wake up and decide to jump into the shower. Use over the counter whitening strips and whiten while you get wake up in the shower.

At snack time: Snack on apples, pears, strawberries, celery, carrots, and any raw veggie which happens to produce saliva that will help remove bacteria and whiten your teeth. These healthy foods will help clean your teeth.

After lunch: Chewing whitening gum that contains calprox, which will remove stains but even any gum will work. Since gum stimulates saliva flow, and will act as a natural detergent, and remove some of the stains. Rinse with water if nothing else is available, which will remove some of the stains.

Night out: When choosing a lipstick for a night out choose lipsticks with blue undertones, which will make teeth appear whiter. Rose, reds, burgundy, and plum shades works well. Be careful when choosing a shade because a color with an orange undertone can make your teeth appear dull and yellow.

After dinner: Swish water in your mouth for 30 seconds right after eating to help prevent stains from the food that you ate.

    Dr. Zong’s Pedi-Do’s and Dont's

According to most American women, a trip to the nail salon or spa for a pedicure is not just a luxury, it’s a necessity. With so many women including pedicures as routine, it is no surprise that the bar has been raised when it comes to safety standards. According to New York City cosmetic podiatrist Dr. Oliver Zong, “a pedicure is something I recommend to my patients who want to maintain both the health and look of their feet, but I warn them to ‘proceed with caution’ when choosing a nail salon to frequent.”

Dr. Zong’s hesitation is warranted. As a prominent podiatrist in New York City, Dr. Zong has seen countless patients who have developed infections in their feet as a result of spa pedicures.

    Dr. Zong’s Pedi-Do’s:

  • Do ask salon workers how the foot spas are maintained and how often they are cleaned. Take notice of their actions while they are working on clients to see if footbaths are disinfected with each customer.
  • Do pay attention to the time spent cleaning footbaths between customers. The disinfectant needs to work for the full time listed on its label, typically 10 minutes, depending on the type of disinfectant. It is worth your health & safety to practice patience at the spa!
  • Do check your skin for infection during the days following your pedicure. Open wounds may appear on the skin of your feet and legs and can look like insect bites, but increase in size and severity over time.
  • Do visit your podiatrist or primary care physician if you suspect you may have a serious infection.

  • Dr. Zong’s Pedi-Don’ts:
  • Don’t get a pedicure if you have cuts or abrasions on your feet or legs. Microorganisms living in footbaths can enter through the skin and cause infection.
  • Don’t shave, wax or use hair removal creams within a day before getting a pedicure
  • Don’t get a pedicure if you have bug bites, bruises, scratches, scabs or poison ivy.

  • Dr. Oliver Zong is a podiatrist in Manhattan's influential Financial District. As one of the premier cosmetic foot surgeons in the country, he serves as the Director of Surgery at NYC FOOTCARE and is on the Board of Directors at Gramercy Park Surgery Center. Besides traditional and cosmetic foot surgery, Dr. Zong is also an accomplished cryosurgeon and co-founder of the Podiatric Cryosurgery Center of New York. He is an attending physician at New York Hospital Downtown, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Cabrini Medical Center, and Gramercy Park Surgery Center. Dr. Zong graduated as Valedictorian from New York College of Podiatric Medicine where he earned his degree, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). For more information please visit www.NYCFOOTCARE.com.

A Q&A with Dr. Laura Torrado

    1. Do bleaching strips help you get the Hollywood smile?
Over the counter whitening strips are an inexpensive alternative to professional bleaching kits or office bleaching. When it comes to whitening the only "secret" comes down to this: "Peroxide, Peroxide, Peroxide." The over the counter products contains 9% of it as opposed to the 35% concentrate the dentist’s office gel has. The strips are more effective if your teeth are not that dark. You can bleach in an hour in the office with a laser light and the 35% concentrate; it will take longer but as long as we allow the peroxide gel to remain in contact with the teeth long enough the whitening results will happen. You have to allow at least a week for the strips to produce the effect.

    2. How do you concoct a home remedy for whiter teeth?
One of the better home recipes for whiter teeth is a paste consist of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, table salt and a dab of toothpaste. Mix it all together and brush away stains.

    3. How do you keep your teeth white after drinking red wine (and other colored drinks)?
Wine Wipes (www.winewipes.com) seem to work very well if you are out and don't want to let the purple color of the wine seep into your teeth. Another good product is Colgate’s disposable "wisp" brushes.

    4. What should you NOT do when trying to get your teeth whiter?
There are some scary recipes on the internet for teeth whitening that involve lemon or orange peels being rubbed against your teeth. Beware: lemon has citric acid!! It will decalcify and de-mineralize your enamel making it more prone to decay!! Really damaging!

Tips from THE Kissing Expert, Andréa Demirjian

Did you pucker up only to be disappointed? Now’s the time to snap your kissing into shape!

To boost your Kissing Quotient to “fantabulous”, focus on enhancing the sensual pleasures of touch, taste and smell to seduce your partner – you’re “kissability” will be so supercalifragalistic, he won’t be able to get enough!

Touch – When getting “lip to lip”, be prepared with a perfectly smooth, soft pout. For dewy moisture and inviting fullness, I’m a fan of VIVITÉ’s® Defining Lip Plumper. It helps improve the appearance of lip volume and fullness. It can even help with those tiny fine lines and wee little wrinkles. VIVITÉ’s® gentle conditioners are like an SOS for the lips, making them smooth and soft, while soothing botanicals help protect against those environmental stressors that can wreak havoc.

Did you know a recent national survey of 1,000 women found that 34% of us gals are worried about the dread of dry, chapped lips when kissing, so make sure yours stay supple!

Taste – Funky breath can be a total foul, so to avoid getting dinged on a technicality, be prepared with delightfully kissable breath no matter the time of day. For a super tasty mouth, Colgate Wisp is the dandy doo-dad for that clean feeling “on the go”. Its built-in freshening beads release a cool mintiness as you brush (no sink or running water required!), putting you totally at the ready for that perfect kiss. It will leave him breathless.

Smell – The allure of your essence is “all important” when he leans in for a kiss, and a sexy yet subtle “bouquet” will intoxicate him. The newest thing in fragrance is scent made just for your hair. A wonderful one is Aquolina Pink Sugar Hair Perfume – with its hints of Sicilian orange, licorice and raspberry, it’s like an aroma aphrodisiac that will drive him wild!

Now that you’re prepared for a sublimely sexy smooch, engage in some “kissing foreplay”. Start with eye contact, holding hands and nuzzling, and let the excitement build slowly. By the time you get to the luscious lip-lock, the fireworks will have you both savoring the moment.

Finding Balance in Work and Life
    By: Dr. Christina Grant

When you are in balance and harmony with life you can be most effective in your business. What you want to achieve suffers when you are too much engrossed in the tasks or worries of work and not taking time to maintain harmony within your body, mind, and spirit.

Most of us have been trained to work hard. If we are not working hard, we have been programmed to feel guilty about not working hard. Ever heard someone called lazy because they weren’t working hard enough?

Hard work has held the promise of reward, but there is a downside if we find ourselves not enjoying the living of it all. If balance between work and life outside of work is not maintained, your well-being can suffer, harming your peace of mind, physical health, and your relationships.

Even if you love your work, thrive on it, and can do it all day and into the night, it is important to take some time to rest and create a balance. Stop, reflect, restore, and revitalize. Your relationships need attention, your spirit needs nurturing, your body needs care, and your mind needs some time off. If these are neglected, is there any amount of success that can make up for their loss?

I think it is important to work at something you love, or at least like. Simultaneously, it is important to pay attention to your inner world. This helps you maintain a healthy balance. There are 10 simple things you can do each day to aid you in this worthy endeavor. I practice them myself and hope you will join me.

    1. Inhale with awareness.
    2. Walk in nature, even for just 10 minutes. Aim for 30.
    3. Sit in silence and still your mind for at least 10 minutes each day.
    4. Notice if you are thirsty, hungry, tired. What do you do about it?
    5. While eating, slow down and give your full attention.
    6. Avoid people who consume your energy.
    7. Embrace people who accept and support your endeavors.
    8. Regard the beauty of your surroundings.
    9. Appreciate the freedom and ability to work or establish a business of your own.
    10. Exhale completely.

    One Step at a Time

Countless American women suffer from the foot deformity brachymetatarsia. Brachymetatarsia, sometimes referred to as short toe syndrome, is a condition where one or more of the five long bones of the feet are unusually short, resulting in a stunted toe that hovers above the others. It’s caused when the metatarsal growth plate closes too early and the bone ceases to grow, which in many cases is thanks to a genetic disorder but can also result from trauma. For these reasons, brachymetatarsia doesn’t appear until between about ages 10 to 14.

Midtown Podiatry is a New York City-based practice that specializes in the treatment of brachymetatarsia and according to one of its board-certified podiatrists, Dr. John Doolan, it’s a relatively common affliction. “There are a large number of people who have the condition but don’t acknowledge it for what it is until they feel backed into a corner,” Dr. Doolan says. He goes on to explain that many sufferers incorrectly believe they are alone with what are simply ugly feet. “We recently had a young woman come in who never knew that her “floating toe” was the result of an actual medical condition. She came to our office only after her relationship got serious and she was worried she wouldn’t be able to keep her foot hidden forever.”

In truth, says Dr. Doolan, brachymetatarsia is a painful medical condition that affect s a person’s ability to walk properly and is the source of a great deal of avoidable embarrassment among those who live with it. The good news is that it can be successfully treated.

According to Dr. Doolan, what begins as foot pain spreads to other parts of the body, which in the long run discourages otherwise active people to sit on the sidelines of life. “Eventually patients overcompensate by relying on other parts of their body to take the pressure off the affected foot, causing pain in their knees, hips and back. The constant discomfort leads them to less activity. Another hallmark of brachymetatarsia is irritation of the “floating” toe, and the outcome is the same: initial discomfort, damage to other parts of the body, and eventually a relatively sedentary lifestyle.”

The podiatrists at Midtown Podiatry are some of the most experienced when it comes to treating brachymetatarsia. While there are non-surgical approaches to treatment (like choosing shoes with wide and high toe boxes or avoiding activities that aggravate the problem), these methods treat only the symptoms, not the cause. Based on the patient’s individual needs and the severity of the condition, the doctors at Midtown Podiatry determine which of two surgical techniques is best for each case.

  • The first option involves a bone graft, which is surgically inserted into the affected long bone to extend it. The use of a bone graft is appropriate when the bone involved isn’t too short - a determination made via pre-op X-rays - and is a one-step job. “This is a great option that gives the patient immediate relief from the physical and emotional pressure they feel. Despite the downside to this surgery, which is that it usually requires four weeks on crutches, patients who opt for it are almost universally thrilled with the results,” Dr. Doolan explains.

  • The second method to treat brachymetatarsia is a two-step procedure that employs a device known as an external fixator, allowing the patient to gradually (and painlessly) lengthen the bone about one millimeter daily until it reaches the desired length. The first step is comprised of the surgical insertion of the device and the manual lengthening, a process that takes about four weeks. The bone must fully heal before step two, which is the surgical removal of the external fixator. The entire process takes an average of two months and permits most patients to walk throughout.
  • Like other foot deformities, brachymetatarsia has an undeserved reputation as a purely cosmetic issue despite the considerable pain and potential health problems it can cause.

“There’s an alarming trend of shame and embarrassment among those who suffer from it that’s entirely avoidable. In a matter of hours, brachymetatarsia can be safely repaired and the patient can move forward with the life they always wished they had,” says Dr. Doolan. “What’s more is that they almost always find that they are able to lead healthier lives with more frequent exercise and quality time spent with family and friends unhindered by pain or embarrassment.”

Dr. Doolan is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS) and is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, the American Podiatric Medical Association and serves on the executive board of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association. In addition to his private New York City practice, Midtown Podiatry, Dr. Doolan is on staff at Beth Israel Medical Center, Holy Name Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Interfaith Medical Center and Gramercy Park Surgery Center - where he is the Clinical Podiatric Supervisor and On-site Residency Director - and also practices at the St. Vincent’s Wound Care Center. www.midtownpodiatry.com

    Fitness Myths & Facts

Here are some interesting myths and facts from It's a Glam Thing friend Jenny Evans, Stress/Exercise Physiologist, the Founder of PowerHouse Performance Coaching, International speaker and the creator of PowerHouse Hit the Deck™.

    1. LONGER WORKOUTS AT A LOWER INTENSITY BURN MORE FAT.
Short and intense interval training sessions can improve whole body fat oxidation by 36% and may offer greater benefits than lengthy bouts of steady-state exercise. Interval training allows you to get more work done in the same amount of time because you can work at greater intensity levels than if you were doing steady state training. Your overall production (calories burned) will be greater despite the frequent breaks because you are able to work at a higher intensity. Interval training also improves your level of fitness very quickly, typically in a matter of just a few weeks, and this improvement in fitness allows you to perform more work and burn more calories during an exercise session.

    2. I SHOULD WORKOUT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH SO MY BODY WILL BURN FAT.
You must put glucose (food) in the system before you exercise. If you are exercising with no glucose in the system, it sends your body into Emergency Mode. Emergency Mode = hold on to body fat for as long as possible because it is valuable energy and will be necessary to survive. Instead of fat, your body will break down muscle tissue and use that as energy. It does this for two major reasons: 1) Muscle is metabolically active tissue. For this reason it's viewed as costly when there is not enough energy coming in. Your body is "doing you a favor" by getting rid of really needy, high maintenance cells. Emergency Mode is all about energy conservation: Get rid of muscle, hold on to fat. 2) Losing muscle mass slows down your metabolism, which conserves energy. This is your body's goal when you are in Emergency Mode. If you are working out - or even physically active - and there is no glucose in the system, your primary fuel source is muscle, not fat. Get your body out of Emergency Mode by making sure to keep adequate glucose in the system by eating several small meals and snacks throughout the day.

    3. IF I DON’T HAVE AT LEAST 30 MINUTES TO EXERCISE I SHOULD JUST SKIP IT BECAUSE I WON’T GET ANY BENEFIT.
Science has shown that you do not have to do long, continuous workouts to get benefit. Studies have taken two groups of exercisers and divided them in to '30 minutes of continuous exercise done in one session' and '30 minutes done in 3 bouts of 10 minutes each, spread throughout the day'. Guess which group got more benefit? The second group that spread out their three 10 minutes sessions reaped more benefit, and here's why: Every time you exercise, your metabolism increases. When you finish exercising, it takes a while for your metabolism to slow back down. This means free extra calories being burned! I like to think of this as the "Afterburner Effect". The group that did 30 consecutive minutes got only one "afterburner effect", whereas the second group got three! Another benefit to splitting up your workouts is that it may be more do-able from a time management perspective. Finding a big block of time can be very challenging, but finding 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes mid-day and 10 minutes in the evening definitely has possibilities. Instead of bagging a workout because you don't have 45 minutes or an hour, see how much you can accumulate throughout the day or week.

    4. IF I STOP EXERCISING, ALL MY MUSCLE WILL TURN TO FAT.
Muscle cannot turn into fat. Molecularly the two are as different as oil and water. As you begin to exercise your muscle fibers hypertrophy (grow), causing your metabolism to increase. This increase in energy expenditure creates an energy deficit, and so your body uses stored energy from the fat cells causing them to shrink in size. When you stop exercising the muscle fibers atrophy (shrink), causing your metabolism to slow. This decrease in physical activity and energy expenditure coupled with eating the way you did when you were working out creates an energy surplus, which is stored in the fat cells and they grow larger. It is just a matter of taking up space, not turning into something else.

    5. WORKING MY ABS ALL THE TIME WILL GET ME A SIX-PACK STOMACH.Physical activity - including resistance training - will help reduce body fat, but not specifically or exclusively in the isolated muscle group being worked. Current theory shows that a reduction in calorie intake coupled with exercise results in fat reduction throughout the entire body, not in localized spots. You cannot “spot reduce” fat on specific areas of the body. Body fat decreases in an all over body sense - your body genetically decides where the fat goes to or comes from first and unfortunately you can’t control it. Reducing body fat is best accomplished through a combination of cardiovascular activity, resistance training, and a healthy diet.

    6. I’M TOO OLD TO HAVE A FIRM STOMACH OR TONED LEGS.
Although studies indicate you may lose muscle mass as you become older, you can slow or even reverse the process through exercise. There is no reason why you cannot improve the strength, flexibility, and overall appearance of your body no matter how old you are. The old adage “Use it or lose it” applies here. Most people lose muscle mass because they stop exercising, not because they are old. They become sedentary. Depending on your present level of fitness, you can add muscle mass to some degree or another. You’re never too old to receive the health benefits of exercise and to look great!

    A Nail Q&A

Why should women (& men) get regular manicures?
Raya:  Regular manicures are a great way to obtain and maintain healthy beautiful nails. Good grooming makes a great first impression and well manicured nails and healthy looking hands are an important part of that.

    Do you recommend regular pedicures?
Raya: Yes. Regular pedicures help make feet feel and look better. A skilled nail technician will tend to calluses properly and help combat the damage that high heels, tight fitting shoes and boots cause. Plus there is nothing like pretty polished toes with a strappy summer sandal!

Why won't polish stay on natural nails as long as it does on acrylics?
Raya: Polish does not stay on the natural nail like it does on acrylics because natural nails are porous and absorb oil and cream. Wash natural nails very well and wipe them off with polish remover before applying a base coat. The polish stays in place longer.

Is it important to use sunscreen on my hands?
Raya: Yes it is. Sun damage can result in premature aging of the skin, dryness and dark brown spots.

Is it better to shorten nails by clipping or filing?
Raya: If you need to shorten nails it is better to clip them first and finish shaping with a proper nail file.

What is the best way to care for my cuticles at home?
Raya: Massage cuticles with cuticle oil on regular bases to keep them soft and healthy.

What nail shape/length do you prefer for your own nails?
Raya: I prefer a medium length nail with a square shape.

    Dr. Bruce Katz warns

In this economy, consumers are "penny-pinching" in all aspects of life, motivated to find the best deals available. But, consumers should be aware that there is no bargain when it comes to cosmetic procedures and that basement deals can result in scars, disfiguration and for some, even death.

"Recently I've seen an increase in patients coming to me in desperation to help reverse their botched procedures," says Bruce Katz, M.D., board certified dermatologist and director of the Juva Skin and Laser Center. "Cosmetic procedures are medical procedures and should always be performed in a medical office or hospital setting by a board certified dermatologist - I often propose the question, would you let a foot doctor perform brain surgery at a friend's house?"

Dr. Katz suggests the following tips for patients looking to undergo a cosmetic procedure.

. Do research - There are many people claiming to be a board certified dermatologist. Look beyond the degree on the wall in their office. Call a professional dermatology association to ensure that this physician is indeed a board certified dermatologist trained to perform the specific procedure.

. Ask Questions - Be sure to ask about your specific procedure and how many times they've performed the procedure and over how long a period of time and how often. Also, ask to see before and after pictures of patients that have had the procedure.

. Be wary of "deals" - If a deal is too good to be true, chances are it is! Get multiple consultations and compare costs. If one cost is significantly lower than the others then it should be ruled out.

. Go with your instinct - Do not make excuses for how you feel before a cosmetic procedure or blame your feelings on nerves. If something does not "feel right," then you should speak up and cancel the procedure.

. Avoid cosmetic parties - Don't rely on other people's research. If you are attending parties where cosmetic procedures are performed, chances are you haven't had a chance to confirm that they are a board certified dermatologist and trained in that procedure.

. Don't be fooled - Many spas claim to have a board certified dermatologist to perform cosmetic procedures. Don't be fooled! - These "ghost doctors" may only visit the spa once a week and may not be present during your procedure. Ask questions during the consultation about how often the dermatologist is on site.

. Don't be embarrassed - Speak up! If you experience a botched procedure, you should contact a board certified dermatologist immediately. Waiting could result in further damage and even death.

Tips on how to wear your favorite hat and the right hairstyle for it...

    Hat Style: Fedora
Hair Style: Contrast the angles of the hat with loose feminine waves.
Why This Works: Loose feminine waves are a great way to wear your hair under a Fedora.  This type of hat has very sharp “menswear” angles.  This is off-set by the softer hairstyle.
How To Achieve This Look:  This type of hair style works best on medium to longer length hair.  If hair has a natural wave, simply apply a curl enhancing products like P2® by Philip Pelusi® ReCurl to boost waves and BeachComber to add texture and let hair dry or dry with a diffuser attachment on your blow dyer.  If hair is straight, use a big barrel curling iron to add curls, some facing towards and some facing away from the face.

    Hat Style: Newsboy cap
Hair Style: Create ballerina-esque bun at the nape of the neck.
Why This Works: Wearing a ballerina-esque bun at the nape is perfect combination with this tomboyish type Newsboy cap look.  Also the Newsboy cap is supposed to be worn low on the forehead and this tends to cover most of the entire forehead.  Wearing a ballerina bun pulls the hair back off the face opening to face up.
How To Achieve This Look:   Part hair in the center and smooth hair back into a low ponytail at the middle of the nape.  Use a hair smoothing bore bristle brush and a hair smoothing product like Tela® Beauty Organics Composure.  Apply product to the ponytail also and brush smooth.  Twist ponytail in one direction and wind around ponytail and secure with a few hair pins.  Put on Newsboy and you are ready to go.

    Hat Style: Beret
Hair Style: Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
Why This Works: A side swept ponytail is a perfect way to wear your hair under a Beret.  A Beret has a French romantic look and this feminine ponytail really compliments that.  Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
How To Achieve This Look: This look works best with straight or smooth hair.  Create a side part and use a bore bristle paddle brush and a hair smoothing product like Tela® Beauty Organics Encore and brush into a low side ponytail at the nape on the opposite side of the part.  Secure ponytail and put on Beret.  The back of the Beret should slouch to the opposite side of the ponytail.

    Hat Style: Shearling hat
Hair Style: Pull the hair half-way back, then unclip when the hat comes off to get the hair's bounce back.
Why This Works: Shearling hats are beautiful and warm but they often crush the hair.  A hair half-way up look is a great idea to make the hair look great while the hat is on and preserve the hair for when the hat comes off.
How To Achieve This Look: Style hair as usual and then apply a product that can act as a dry hair setting lotion like P2® by Philip Pelusi® Increase. Then divide hair in half from ear to ear and twist up the crown of the head and secure with a clip.  This will work as a dry set.  Once you take the hat off and remove clip, toss to separate hair and revive hair with a hair refreshing product like as P2® by Philip Pelusi® RefresHair®.

    Dr. Joel Schlessinger

Dr. Joel Schlessinger, Board Certified Dermatologist and Cosmetic Surgeon, founder of LovelySkin.com and president emeritus of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery recently spoke with us about the benefits of using Lumixyl. Here are his answers to some of our questions.

Q:  What is the concept of sun damage?

A:  Sun damage is a combination of quite a few things, including brown spots due to sun, blood vessels and wrinkles.  The brown spots can be easily treated with cosmeceuticals now.

Q: Is it a quick reversal?

A: The reversal happens over a few weeks to months.  If you are using this exciting new product, Lumixyl, it can even happen as early as 6 to 8 weeks!

Q: Is hydroquinone an ingredient in Lumixyl?

A: Lumixyl has a combination of proprietary products, but not hydroquinone.  Many patients feel uncomfortable using hydroquinone or have used it and now want a 'step down' product.  This product provides that.

Q: Can sun damage be reversed?

A: Yes, it can, but it is important to keep in mind that protection after the reversal is equally necessary.  That means protection from the sun via sunscreen, avoidance and other means like the Lumixyl.

Q: Where can you purchase Lumixyl online?

A:  We are very proud to be the only online e-tailer for Lumixyl.  So far the results are fantastic and we are happy to provide it to our patients and customers. www.lovelyskin.com

The Right Filler For Smile Lines
    By: Dr. Jessica Wu

“One of my patients recently came to see me after she lost 25 pounds. She looked great in her clothes, but she'd noticed that her smile lines, the ones running from her nose to the corners of her mouth, were deeper than ever, making her look tired and drawn,” says Dr.  Jessica Wu. “She was interested in trying an injectable wrinkle filler. Here's what we discussed.”

Which product is right for me? Not all fillers are created equal, so your doctor will examine you and discuss the pros and cons of different products. Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are a type of collagen that's grown in a lab, so your skin doesn't need to be tested. They contain lidocaine anesthetic, so they sting the least, and they're the softest products, so they're great for treating shallow wrinkles in patients with thin skin. However, they last only about two to three months in the smile lines.

Restylane and Juvéderm are the most popular fillers. They're made of hyaluronic acid, a sugar that's found in your skin and joints. These products may feel firmer under the skin, but they can be used to fill deeper wrinkles, and they last up to six months or a year. Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (synthetic bone). It can last a year or two, but it can form hard lumps under the skin that may be visible.

What will it feel like? A numbing cream can reduce the discomfort of the pinprick injection. I also use plenty of ice before the treatment to minimize the risk of bruising. The treatment may take 15 to 30 minutes.

What will I look like? The treated areas may be mildly pink and swollen for a day or two (similar to the appearance of skin after waxing). Most of my patients have little or no bruising and go right back to work. You can apply makeup immediately after. Most importantly, I tell my patients that the goal should be to look softer and more refreshed but still natural. This means I'm conservative and typically inject only a small amount of filler at a time, so a patient doesn't suddenly look like a different person. If someone looks like an alien after getting filler, it's not because of the product — it's because of poor technique or over injection. So choose your doctor carefully and make sure he or she has plenty of experience and understands the look you want to achieve.

FORBES RILEY- Fitness is a Lifestyle, not a Fad!

Most people look at size 6 Forbes Riley with her toned arms and rock hard abs and assume it is all in her genes, that she has always been in this shape or that she spends hours in the gym. The truth is, Forbes explains, “My mom, bless her soul, was 250+ pounds and was diabetic. I was a chubby kid who wore a size 12-14 and I tried EVERY diet fad out there. I’ve always been a bit too lazy to spend countless hours at a gym. So how is it that at 49 years old and after delivering twin babies (each weighing 7 pounds), that I manage to wear a size 4-6 while still spending minimal time at the gym? Here are some simple tools for you to use…”

    • YOUR CAR DOESN’T RUN ON WATER AND YOUR BODY DOESN’T RUN ON JUNK FOOD AND EMPTY CALORIES. “Eat as many fresh, raw and organic foods as possible. They provide the nutrients and enzymes to activate your body’s metabolism. To that end, don’t skip breakfast, drink 8 glasses of water daily and if it is white, (rice, pasta, and bread) simply avoid it. To quote my mentor and dear friend, Jack Lalanne (who is turning 95 this year)…”If man made it, don’t eat it!”
    • EXERCISE REGULARY. “The secret to exercise is to start slow and to not overdo it at first. Find exercises that you enjoy. There is such a range of joyous things to do to move your body. You can choose from yoga and Pilates and dance classes, the gym, home equipment, various sports or you can just walk! And the best part is that the endorphins you release when you exercise make you feel better and ultimately less stressed out and tired.”
    • HAVE EQUIPMENT IN YOUR HOME. “While gyms are great and have their place, the downside is that they require time (getting dressed, driving to), they can be intimidating and often costly. A one-time investment in a treadmill, elliptical, a bike and hand weights can last for 10 years or more. The other benefits to having equipment in your home is that you can exercise day or night, while wearing anything that you find comfortable. I find myself enjoying a lot of the new and innovative products including the Urban Rebounder Trampoline, the Body Wedge and the most exciting product this year (and one I am happy to have attached my name to) the SpinGym® www.MySpinGym.com. The SpinGym® is a handy compact product that tightens and tones your arms, shoulder and chest. The best part about it is that you can carry it in your purse and do it anywhere. Five minutes is all you need. Try it at your office desk or while waiting for the kids to finish their swimming lesson or even while waiting to be called into the dentist chair! It is so portable and convenient. You will have no more excuses. No more of ‘I don’t have time for the gym.’ “You can now get a quick workout anytime and anywhere!”

Finally and foremost, Forbes believes that fitness needs to be a way of life. She says, “My personal philosophy about health and fitness is that it is a lifestyle, not a fad. Just like a sailboat in water, turn just one degree and over time you’re heading in a vastly new direction. Your body will thank you!”

    Alcohol Effects on Skin
    By: Dr. Jessica Wu

One of my favorite ways to unwind at the end of a hectic day is to share some wine or fruity cocktails with my best girlfriends. And with so many delicious elixirs to choose from, it can be difficult to limit yourself to just one. But that's exactly the cut-off recommended by government health experts — they caution that more than one drink a day can increase the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and certain types of cancer in women.

While certain drinks (like red wine) may offer some health benefits, derived from the fruits, herbs, or antioxidants they contain, the fact is that even if you're in good health, alcohol can have noticeably negative effects on your skin. Since some of these effects are definitely not pretty, you and your girlfriends may want to think twice about ordering another round during your next ladies' night.

    • First of all, alcohol is a diuretic, so drinking too much causes you — and your skin — to become dehydrated, which can lead to dull, dry skin and hair and premature wrinkles! Excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to broken blood vessels, which can leave permanent patches of redness on your skin, especially around your nose and cheeks.
    • Persistent excessive drinking can eventually damage your liver, which, as you know, is the organ that's supposed to flush toxins out of your system. If your liver can't do its job, those toxins will remain inside your body. Not only does that put you at risk for liver diseases, such as hepatitis (inflammation) and cirrhosis (hardening), but it's also bad news for your skin, because those toxins will eventually make their way to the surface in the form of blotches, blemishes, bumps, and an overall sickly complexion.
    • Asians, in particular, tend to experience a skin-flushing reaction to alcohol. Research suggests that this is caused by a genetic disorder that prevents the body from fully breaking down the alcohol. Some experts warn that this condition may increase the risk of alcohol-related complications.
    • If you have a skin condition such as rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis, alcohol can aggravate its symptoms.

So how much alcohol is appropriate, skin- and health-wise, for a night out? Well, health experts say just one drink (containing 14 grams of pure alcohol) for women. If you know you're going to drink more than that, do yourself a favor and eat before you start drinking, drink full glasses of water between alcoholic beverages, and pace yourself. These measures won't reduce your risk of alcohol-related conditions, but they may minimize the effects of alcohol on your body that night (and the next morning). Have a good time, but think before you drink.

    Young Professional's Guide to Success

Ryan Kohnen is a 29-year-old entrepreneurial success.  In his new book Young Professional's Guide to Success (Aug 2009, Emerald Book Company), he pulls together the advice of over 70 CEOs, top executives and community leaders including Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea Company; Hala Moddelmog, CEO of Susan G. Komen For The Cure; Essie L. Calhoun, Chief Diversity Officer of Eastman Kodak Company and Ellen J. Kullman, CEO of DuPont to share what these leaders did early in their careers to set themselves up for their future successes.

It’s a Glam Thing got this great list from Ryan of his top 5 ways to dress for a job interview with a clothing budget of less than $100!

    1) Go monochromatic. Dressing in one color is always polished and can make up for the fact that your suit isn't Armani.
    2) Develop a relationship with a tailor.  Even a $20 pair of Gap dress pants are interview-worthy if they fit right.
    3) Discount retailers and off-season sales are your friends.  Last season's perfectly fashionable castoffs can be yours for often one quarter of the price.
    4) Separates are an option, especially in neutral colors.  A navy cardigan can replace a navy jacket-especially when paired with a navy pencil skirt.
    5) Limit jewelry.  It can tend towards expensive or showy and neither will do you any favors while you're looking for work. www.YPSuccess.com

Turn Back the Hands of Time

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then a person’s hands are the mirrors of one’s age.  Hands never lie…until now!  Each year, Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars on lotions, creams and salves designed to keep their faces looking younger.  And, thanks to modern medicine, many of these products work.   But what about the often forgotten true test of a person’s age, the hands?

As the natural aging process occurs, the skin loses its elasticity and deteriorates. The tendons and vessels become prominent, resulting in old and worn-looking hands. Once thought to be an unfortunate fact of life, today people are turning to familiar treatment for a novel anti-aging solution…injections of fillers like Radiesse or fat transfers into the hands. Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon, Board-Certified Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour, owner of Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group, is one such doctor to offer this new procedure and here is what he has to say about it:

Until recently, the emphasis was on keeping the face youthful, and the hands, which are just as visible, were typically ignored. Patients are now realizing the critical role hands play in their overall appearance and are seeking to turn back the clock so to speak. The use of products like Radiesse or fat transfers smoothes and fills out the skin, producing dramatically younger looking hands. The injections last approximately one year with no associated downtime."

    ABOUT DR. FARDAD FOROUZANPOUR

    Smooth Operator

Even though you may log hundreds of hours in the gym and consistently eat a healthy diet, it may still be impossible to achieve that sought after beach-ready bottom because of one pesky problem. Cellulite!

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 90% of women have cellulite, and unless you are one of those lucky few dimple-free ladies, you are probably constantly trying to find ways to hide, mask and eliminate those unsightly lumps and bumps from your thighs, stomach and/or arms.  But with so many options from cream moisturizers, gels and mechanical massagers, how are women supposed to know which products live up to their hype?

Celebrity plastic surgeon, Dr. AnthonyYoun, notes that "although there are certain factors besides age and genes that contribute to cellulite such as alcohol intake and diet, there is no magical cure for cellulite. However, there are a few options which best help to disguise the stubborn problem." Dr. oun weighs in on the most popular cellulite treatments to see if they really do cut the fat.

Treatment : Topical creams, gels and serums

What they claim : Topical treatments claim to firm up skin and break down fat through the use of ingredients such as retinoids, Vitamin A, caffeine and or even black tea

Does it work? According to Dr. Youn, topical treatments are only effective if used on a consistent basis, and even so only mask or camouflage the problem. There is currently no dream cream cellulite treatment available, but coupled with exercise and a healthy diet these creams (especially options which include self-tanners) can be used for a quick, temporary fix.

    Treatment : Body Wraps

What they claim : At home or in-spa treatments which use a combination of minerals and herbs applied to the skin with the use of compression wraps, stimulate fat cells and remove waste and toxins from pores, ultimately eliminating swelling the dimpled area for a smoother appearance

Does it work? In terms of getting rid of cellulite, Body Wraps and other slimming spa treatmentsare not effective. “Although a slight reduction in the appearance of cellulite may occur, ultimately body wrap treatments should be utilized as a form of relaxation" states Dr. Youn.

    Treatment: Cellulite-Reduction Pills

What they claim: Most contain some formula of grape seed extract, ginkgo biloba fatty acids and/or yellow sweet clover which work together to diminish fatty build-ups and restore skin's elasticity

Does it work? Dr. Youn says that "orally ingested pills are distributed throughout the entire body and not only to one localized area such as the buttocks or thighs. Additionally, the ingredients used in these pills have resulted in serious side-effects such as headaches, nausea, increased risk of bleeding or even liver disease. Like most weight-loss pills, a pill to cure cellulite is simply too good to be true."

    Treatment : Mechanical massagers

What it claims :  Utilizes rollers and /or gentle suctioning to deep massage a certain area in order to increase circulation, restore collagen function and expel water buildup resulting in a smoother, more contoured body. Options range from at-home devices such as simple hand tools with roller balls or powerful heat, massage and suction machines found at the doctor's office

Does it work? According toDr. Youn, "cellulite cannot be eliminated simply by massaging. This treatment only redistributes fat stores into a different area of the body, but does not permanently eliminate them"

    Treatment: Lasers

What it claims: Through the use of a painless laser, fatty layers under the skin are melted and collagen production is boosted for a less dimply appearance

Does it work?   " Currently this type of treatment is the most effective available to get rid of cellulite because once fat is melted it is broken down by the lymph nodes, however the treatment cost is high (approximately $200 per treatment) and at least eight treatments are needed in order to see results, therefore it is not the best option for everyone,” notes Dr. Youn

    Treatment: Liposuction

What it claims: Invasive procedure that removes excess fat from a particular area of the body

Does it work?   " Liposuction is still the best surgical option to get rid of fat. However, Liposuction does not affect the inflexible connective tissue near the top of the skin which ultimately causes cellulite, therefore there is still a chance for the appearance of dimpled skin," says Dr. Youn

    The Hair Guy

It’s a Glam Thing just loves Kenneth “KD” Darell “The Hair Guy”! KD was kind enough to spend time with us and answered some questions for our IAGT readers.

    Q. What is the best piece of advice you can offer to anyone who may wish to use a flat iron on their hair?
    A. For best results, it’s best to flat iron hair that is freshly washed and clean. Use half-inch sections and hold hair taut. (Much like ironing a shirt, it’s the same application. If you flat iron “wrinkled” hair, you’ll not achieve smooth iron results.) Flat ironing should be done in one continuous motion. My personal preference is to iron dry hair, as damp hair can generate steam that can be scalding. Ironing damp hair can also give you uneven results. Of worthy mention…flat irons are not only for the curly headed! If you have straight hair and want to increase the shine—try a flat iron. The heat closes and seals the cuticle layer (the outer layer of the hair) and it makes for a flat smooth surface that reflects light for a brilliant shine every time!

    Q. What is your experience with the Hana Flat Iron?
    A. Hana makes a flat iron that is ergonomically correct; it fits in your hand well, making it easy to use. It heats up fast and recovers quickly from one application to the next—reheating precisely for consistent results.

    Q. What are the current hair trends for men?
    A. There is no “trend” for men; EVERYTHING is in! The style just depends on hair texture and the shape of his face. So, guys, find a cut you like and let a professional take it from there.

    Q. What advice can you offer to mature women?
    A. As women age, they may experience physical limitations, thinning hair, or they just don’t want to mess with it. My suggestion, first and foremost, is, ladies, don’t fall into the trap of keeping the same hairstyle that you’ve had for 30 years! Capture an element of your lifestyle and a hairstyle that compliments it and keeps you looking young and “current.” As for color, as hair grays, it yellows and “gray” is not synonymous with youth and beauty. So go for some color, but select a color that gravitates toward your natural hair color—and stay away from blue!

    Q. Why is there a difference in the cost of a man’s haircut verses a woman’s haircut?
    A. Guys are frugal when it comes to a haircut! So, prices are set in accordance with demand, not to mention geographical location. In Nashville, you can get a great cut for half the price that you’d pay for the same cut in L.A. But, no matter the price, the bottom line is…when you find a hairstylist that you like, it’s money well spent large or small.

    Alegra's How-tos

Alegra Torel, international fashion consultant and personal stylist, shares her 4 easy ways to a Sucessful Closet Make-over with It's a Glam Thing. Thanks Alegra!

Don’t do it alone... This is the first rule and the most important one to keep. Even the best of us have bias/distorted vision. Our wardrobes are our past time. Our entire history is kept behind those doors and re-living your past should not be done alone.
    · Call over your trusted friend (or your stylist) to offer a second opinion. The colors may be fantastic and the design superb, but maybe the back doesn’t look as good as the front and you just didn’t examine the piece of clothing when you were in a shopping frenzy.

Organization is key... Closets should really be organized by season and level of dress.
    · Buy containers and air tight packs that you can easily store clothing. The level of attire is rather pertinent also. Keep your “going out” clothing to the left and my day time clothing to the right. Everything must be separated so it is not a struggle in the mornings or the evenings when you are rushing to get ready. Then I would even further separate as to weekends and weekdays-work/play...This is where the “trying on” section begins.

Let Go!... If it hasn’t been worn in 6 months you need to let it go – “goodwill it.”
    · When you are going through your clothing to separate the pieces into sections, you will begin to find pieces you haven’t worn in ages, even some you have never worn before. It’s okay to let go! This is the longest section of the closet cleanse. It is time consuming going piece by piece and realizing that you don’t really own any key pieces and now your wondering how you managed to get dressed all these years without them.

    Shop & Replace…
    · Now that you have successfully accessed your stock, it is time to replace the old with the new. Shop for the key staple pieces only. ONLY. And slowly, now that you have the basic tools, begin to BUILD your wardrobe.

Alegra Torel has always had the fashionista gene, gaining her desire to dress the world from her aunt, who received her inspiration from Alegra’s grandmother, Allegra. She developed her appetite to wear daring styles as a child, and encouraging others to be daring as well. Over the years, realizing that her friends and family trusted her exquisite taste, she felt an overwhelming ambition to pursue a career as a personal stylist and fashion consultant, helping one fashion victim at a time. Her plan of action is to make her clients feel great about themselves and how they look. www.alegraknowsfashion.com.

    ASERF Survey Results

Despite what some may think, people aren’t hiding their use of BOTOX® Cosmetic and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. In fact, according to survey statistics just released by The Aesthetic Surgery Education & Research Foundation (ASERF), the research arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), nearly nine out of 10 respondents (87 percent) openly discuss their BOTOX® Cosmetic and hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatments with others, with seven out of ten (70 percent) receiving support from the people they told.

“In a similar survey issued four years ago, we dispelled the myth that Hollywood and corporate wives were the typical BOTOX® Cosmetic patient,” says ASERF President Laurie Casas, MD, a plastic surgeon practicing in suburban Chicago. “Now, demographic and perception data trends show us that aesthetic injectable treatments have continued to evolve into mainstream and accepted options for the everyday woman.”

Survey results found that the typical aesthetic injectable patient is a married, working mother between 41-55 years of age with a household income of under $100,000. The survey also found that women receiving aesthetic injectable treatments are health-conscious and philanthropy minded, with the majority incorporating exercise (95 percent) and healthy eating habits (78 percent) into their lives, and many volunteering with charitable organizations that matter to them (32 percent). In addition, nearly seven out of 10 respondents believe that BOTOX® Cosmetic (72 percent) and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (65 percent) are important parts of their aesthetic routine.

“Interestingly, among BOTOX® Cosmetic patients, nearly seven out of 10 respondents also received treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers with the majority of respondents being treated with JUVÉDERM®,” says Dr. Casas. “Most people have great success with BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers; however, we need to make patients aware that even though injectables are not ‘surgery,’ their administration is a medical procedure with risks that depend on the training and experience of the clinician, the clinical setting and the technique used.”

Additional findings of the survey found that 72 percent of respondents received BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to treat their glabellar lines – also referred to the “11” – the frown lines in between the brows, while 63 percent of those surveyed received hyaluronic acid dermal filler injections to treat their nasolabial folds – also known as the “parentheses” – the lines around the nose and mouth. A few of the most frequently cited reasons to receive treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic was “to look more relaxed, less stressed” while patients reported choosing treatment with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to “look more rejuvenated.”

    Undo the Signs of Aging

In a recent survey of 1,000 adults by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, 31 percent of Americans reported not using sunscreen and 69 percent admitted to only using it occasionally. These findings come as no surprise to board certified New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Sterry. "No matter how many warnings are issued about the potential effects of sun exposure, many of my patients show at least some blatant signs of overexposure," he said, adding that “while preventative measures such as avoiding the sun and wearing SPF are the best way to avoid potentially dangerous sun damage, there are ways to effectively treat the signs of aging due to sun damage including brown sun spots, wrinkles, fine lines, broken capillaries and leathery skin.” And, says Dr. Sterry, “undoing the signs of aging is actually the most successful way he's found to keep people from abusing their skin.”

The tell-tale signs of sun damage can appear at a surprisingly young age and if untreated will only get worse over time thanks in part to a common misconception that only a sun burn can cause damage, and that a tan is even good for your skin. Dr. Sterry says, that a surprising number of people have accepted their sun damage and that by treating it, they can take years off of their appearance.

"I've seen patients who didn't think they had sun damage because they never had a sun burn," says Dr. Sterry. "Sun damage happens on overcast days, while you're driving your car, and especially if you get a tan, and it's a cycle. Many people think once they have sun damage, the best way to mask it is by getting a tan but sun damage is reversible thanks to some great products and treatments many, if not all, plastic surgeons offer."

    At-Home Treatment:

It doesn’t matter when you begin seeing the signs of aging thanks to sun damage. Whether you’re 23 or 43 when you notice them, Dr. Sterry says topical treatments that are both convenient and inexpensive can ease discoloration and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Regular application of these products can also prevent further aging.

According to Dr. Sterry, the most compelling results from topical treatments are seen with products that include idebenone or alpha-hydroxy acids.

Both ingredients are commonly found in drugstore and department store products, but Dr. Sterry suggests speaking to a skin expert like a plastic surgeon who can determine which ingredient will work best for your unique skin condition. Medical grade products are also available at doctors’ offices that may be the best fit.

    In-Office Treatment:

For those who choose them, in-office laser facials and IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments effectively erase the signs of aging and restore a youthful, uniform complexion.

A laser facial is a non-ablative treatment method that corrects uneven facial skin tone, such as brown spots and broken capillaries, and reduces enlarged pores through laser light energy.

An IPL photofacial uses laser technology to safely, discretely and effectively treat uneven skin texture, scars, large pores and diffuse excessive redness and hyperpigmentation.

Dr. Sterry advises prospective patients to consult a credible plastic surgeon with experience using these lasers to determine which treatment is best for their unique needs. “The extent of damage, the person’s lifestyle and other factors impact the decision,” he explains. “But in every case, the fall is the ideal time to treat with lasers because sun exposure must be avoided post treatment.

Dr. Sterry strongly urges everyone to check in with a cosmetic surgeon to find out the extent to which their skin has been damaged by the sun and to take the steps to erase the unattractive signs of aging due to sun damage. While he acknowledges that most people like the appearance of their tanned skin, and have a tough time controlling their sun exposure, Dr. Sterry also says that in every single case he's treated, his patients love their new, younger looking skin after it's freed of sun damage.

    - Thomas P. Sterry, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and esteemed among his colleagues for his expertise in traditional plastic surgery as well as his mastery of body contouring procedures following massive weight loss. Shoshanna shares her advice & tips

Designer and swimwear guru, Shoshanna Gruss, is here to help us with our search for the perfect swimsuit! Shoshanna shares her advice & tips.

    Q. What are the key swim trends to look for this summer?
    A. Look for bright pop colors like neon pink, orange and green. Tribal prints are popular as well as ditsy floral prints, big bohemian florals and graphic black and white.

    Q. How revealing should a swimsuit actually be?
    A. Three-fourths of the bust should be covered, leaving only a swath of cleavage. The thicker the strap that attaches the bust to the rest of the suit, the more likely it'll stay in place as the day goes on. If you opt for a bandeau top, which is often strapless, nothing should be squeezing out the top or the bottom. Boy shorts offer great coverage on the bottom if you're active, but they're far from being a universally flattering style.

    Q. What are the best colors for every skin tone?
    A. Navy and black are universally good for every skin tone. Both colors are flattering and look good against the lightest skin tones and the darkest.

    Q. How do you find a swimsuit that flatters your shape?
    A. If you are Big Busted, look for halters which offer the most support. Also look for boning and underwire which will act like a bra and securely hold you in place.
If you are curvy, look for one pieces with ruching to slim your middle. When shopping for bikini's stick to bottoms with tie string so they are easily adjustable.
If you are flat chested, strings are most flattering. If you want to enhance your chest, look for ruffles or ruching which will create the illusion of a bigger chest.

    Q. How do you take your beach look from day-to-night?
    A. Find a versatile cover up that can take your bikini beach look to a casual dinner. A crochet cover with ¾ sleeves is great because you can throw it over a bikini with cute shorts or jeans and be ready for a Q. night out.

    Q. What are some general tips for purchasing swimwear?
    A. Cotton bathing suits are more for show. They will take a long time to dry compared to a polyester/Spandex blend. Accept that sizes will vary, even from the same label.

    Q. What is the best way to care for swimwear?
    A. Don't put bathing suits in the washing machine, this will weaken the elastic. Instead, wash in cold water with a delicate cleanser such as Woolite.

    Quality Dental Care

Quality dental care can be expensive. During tight economic times, it is even more of a stretch as people's mindsets become conservative and budgets become leaner. IAGT asked prominent New York dentist Dr. Lee Gause, for some tips on ensuring that teeth stay healthy so that dental visit's don't break your bank!

    Don’t Skip your Cleaning!
Cleaning is great example of an inexpensive treatment that prevents problems from developing. Many patients will put off cleanings and let problems develop into more costly problems. For example, if a patient has a small cavity (cost: $400 for a filling) and allows it to grow, it could easily become a tooth needing a root canal and crown (roughly $3,000 procedure).

    Yes, Over-the-Counter Does Work
Some over the counter whitening treatments are relatively effective. The most effective whitening is an in-office whitening treatment, but if a patient simply needs to whiten their teeth only a few shades, Crest White Strips and Listerine Whitening Rinse are two good over the counter products.

    Floss, Floss and…Floss
Flossing removes the bacteria that escape the toothbrush by hiding in the tiny spaces in between teeth. Brushing without flossing is like washing only 65% of your body. The other 35% remains dirty!

Put your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Payment Plans are a Great Option
For cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as teeth whitening, or porcelain veneers, payment plans are often tremendously useful. Care Credit is a GE company that gives 12 month interest free loans to people that are interested in dental procedures. This allows patients to space out payments and not pay large sums of upfront money for dental work.

    - Dr. Gause’s is a dedicated member of various dental associations including the ADA, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists, International College of Oral Implantologists and New York Invisalign Study Group, He is also the recipient of several awards including “2006 Recognition for Lecturing to Young Dentists,” presented by Health and Hospitals Corporation, “Oral Biology Award,” from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and “Graduating Dentist Award: Exemplary Character and Highest Level of Clinical Skill” and “Best in Residency Award,” given by Howard University. www.smiledesignmanhattan.com

    · Think of an experience that you would like to give rather than a specific gift. For example, if you would like to give the experience of relaxation to a special lady on your list, you can build a theme around a home spa or pampering experience.
    · Choose one central gift that will be the foundation or centerpiece of the gift experience. Remember, you are building a gift with three crucial components. This gift should be the main focus.
    · Choose two smaller gifts that will tie the theme together. To save major moolah, consider making gift items by hand, baking gifts from your kitchen or pull from your emergency gift stash. Re-gifting is OK, but make sure the item is in excellent condition or has a clear sentimental value. Just make sure they fit in with your theme, and you’ll be amazed at the results!

You are now ready to give your gift with pride!

    Lisa Drayer

It's easy to feel stressed these days and healthy comfort foods can not only help lower stress levels but can boost energy levels and keep you looking your best. According to Lisa Drayer, M.A., R.D. and author of The Beauty Diet, whole grain carbohydrates like oatmeal help your body produce serotonin, a mood enhancer responsible for calm, relaxed feelings. Fiber in oatmeal provides a feeling of fullness and will help keep you looking slim and feeling fantastic. Delicious sweet potatoes are another starchy food that boost serotonin levels and keep you feeling calm. Beauty nutrient beta-carotene, found in sweet potatoes, acts as an edible sunscreen, protecting skin from UV rays. Omega-3 fatty acids found in wild salmon and walnuts can help calm the mind and provide beaut benefits such as keeping skin smooth, soft, and supple. You can relax with green tea to get a dose of theanine, an amino acid that promotes stress-free feelings and adding honey can boost tea's soothing effects. Green tea is also packed with antioxidant, EGCG, which fights sun damage and increases metabolism for healthy weight control.

    National Stress Awareness Month

April is National Stress Awareness Month and IAGT just found out about a new national survey from Zeno. The Zeno Blemish Anguish Index study was conducted in February and March 2009 by Harris Interactive and surveyed 5,151 adults (ages 19+) and 900 teens (ages 13-18) nationwide. The results show that stress is the number one reason (53%) why adults ages 19+ say they get pimples. We talked with top board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Doris Day, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the New York University Medical Center who recommends the Zeno hand held beauty device for banishing stress induced acne. Below you will find some additional interesting findings regarding the dreaded Blemish and learn what Dr. Day has to say about stress, "recession" acne and Zeno.

“Blemishes are a universal concern for everyone, regardless of age and gender, and they happen most during times like these because stress wreaks havoc on our hormones,” says Dr. Doris Day. “For an easy and effective at-home treatment, I recommend the Zeno, a hand-held beauty device that is FDA-approved and uses soothing heat to kill the bacteria that cause pimples to surface and worsen.”

FDA trials have shown that Zeno starts improving blemishes in less than an hour and eliminates or significantly reduces blemishes within 24 hours for 90% of users. In addition, in clinical trials, 88% of people said Zeno was better than other blemish treatments.

“The Zeno works,” says Dr. Day. “I tell my patients it’s like having a beauty insurance policy that protects you from having a blemish on an important day.”

    Blemish Incidence
Women are more likely than men to get a pimple (75% women vs. 68% men) and also more likely to have them once a month or more often (33% women vs. 22% men). While it is not surprising that the incidence of blemishes appears to decrease with age (the percentage of teens who have ever experienced pimples is 96%; the percentage of adults ages 19-34 who typically get pimples is 90%; 87% for ages 35-44; 72% for ages 45-54; and 49% for ages 55+), even among those 55 and older, nearly one-quarter (23%) experience pimples at least a few times a year.

U.S. adults who typically get blemishes believe they are most likely to get a pimple during times of stress (53%), especially women (women 59% vs. men 46%). Fifty-seven percent of women who get pimples cite their menstrual cycle as a likely time to get them. In addition, women are also more likely than men to say they get pimples when they switch to a new skin care product or make up (women 19% vs. men 8%), but are less likely than men to say the change in seasons results in pimples (women 14% vs. men 21%).

    Location of Blemishes
U.S. adults, regardless of gender, are most likely to get pimples somewhere on their face (50%) with most blemish sufferers getting them on the chin (27%) followed by the forehead (36%), nose (21%) and cheeks (21%). Adults also reported that they get blemishes on their back (17%), neck (9%), chest (9%), buttocks (7%), and arms (6%).

Women are twice as likely as men to get pimples on their chin (36% women vs. 18% men), while men are twice as likely to get pimples on their neck (6% women vs. 11% men). Additionally, women are less likely than men to get pimples on their back (women 12% vs. men 22%), buttocks (women 4% vs. 10% men), and arms (women 5% vs. men 8%).

    Impact of Blemishes
The survey also found that half of adults, including 65% of women between the ages of 19 and 44, would rather have a bad hair day than a pimple on their face and 39% of all adults say having a pimple on their face makes them feel less confident.

To cope with pimples, more than one-third (36%) of adults (as compared to 53% of teens) have picked at or popped a blemish to the point of making it worse and women are more likely to have done so (42%) than men (31%). Women are also more likely to have bought special make-up or product (31% women vs. 5% men) or wore their hair a different way to try to hide the pimple (10% women vs. 1% men).

On the more resourceful side, 3% of adults have used a make-up pencil to darken a blemish and make it look like a beauty mark, 3% have put a band-aid on it to conceal it and 3% have fibbed and told people a blemish was a bug bite or something else.

Teens are particularly self-conscious about blemishes. When they have had a pimple, 24% have avoided being in a photograph, 21% have changed their hairstyle to hide the blemish, 21% have spent money on special make-up or product to hide the blemish, 19% have avoided someone they had a crush on, 8% have avoided meeting someone new, 6% have stayed home at night or over a weekend and 6% have avoided participating in class.

Prom, Graduation and Wedding Day Blemish Anguish
Among teens, 77% of teens (80% of teen girls and 75% of teen boys) said they would hate to have a pimple on prom night and 76% said they would hate to have one on high school graduation day. More than half of teens say that having a pimple on prom night or graduation day would negatively affect the occasion (58% for prom; 51% for graduation).

Among single adults, over half (53%) say it is important that they do not have a pimple on their wedding day and 41% say having a blemish on their wedding day would make the day less enjoyable. Nearly one-quarter (24%) are worried that they will have a pimple on their wedding day.

    Celebrity Skin
Who has the best skin in Hollywood? With her flawless complexion, Halle Berry comes in number one (56%) as the female celebrity with the most beautiful skin. Runners-up include Angelina Jolie (39%), Jennifer Aniston (37%), and Nicole Kidman (35%) among others.

    Why so Vein?

The Founder and Director of the Vein Treatment Center is well known surgeon Luis Navarro, M.D., FACS. Dr. Navarro leads a team of highly specialized and trained physicians, certified physician assistants, and medical support staff in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disorders. Dr. Navarro shared this Q&A with us. Thanks Dr.!

Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: Each patient’s individual treatment needs are different. Treatment will depend on the number, size and location of the incompetent veins, as well as how fast you heal, and the level of cosmetic results you desire. After an initial consultation we can give you a rough estimate of the number of treatments you will need. (see Medical Treatment)

Q: What Can be Done about "ugly" hand veins?
A: Aging, weather, and sun exposure can give hands a leathery feel and make hand veins more pronounced. Dilated hand veins can be easily and effectively treated with sclerotherapy.

Q: Can I be treated if I am pregnant?
A: Treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or while the mother is breast-feeding.

Q: What is economy class syndrome?
A: Varicose veins are often aggravated by extended periods of sitting during travel. In-flight inactivity, when combined with weak vein walls and valves, can lead to 'Economy Class Syndrome,' or the development of blood clots in the superficial or deep venous system of the lower legs. To keep legs healthy at 30,000 feet practice in-flight exercises like rotating your ankles while seated, walking the aisle, and standing calf raises. Use compression stockings, avoid constricting garments and keep well hydrated.

Q: Does the laser work for leg veins?
A: No existing thru-the-skin lasers can offer consistent, satisfactory results in the treatment of spider veins on the legs. Only facial veins can be effectively treated with lasers. Over the past 5 years, lasers have been used endovenously (from inside the vein) to treat large varicose veins with great success. This procedure is known as endovenous laser treatment, or Endolaser™, and was developed and patented by The Vein Treatment Center.

Q: Do men get spider and varicose veins?
A: While women experience vein problems at a rate 15-20 times higher than men, men are more likely than women to suffer from the discomfort of large problem veins. When traditional surgical ligation and stripping was the only treatment option for patients with large vein problems, the gender breakdown of people pursuing surgery remained around 20 to 1 (women to men). However, now that new minimally invasive procedures like Endolaser are available, men are opting for large vein procedures at an acerbated rate.

Q: I have veins that are very visible on my breasts. Can they be treated?
A: A number of women tend to have visible breast veins especially after breast augmentation surgery. If deemed unsightly, breast veins can easily be treated with sclerotherapy.

Q: Once treated, will varicose veins reappear?
A: We cannot treat your predisposition to develop varicose or spider veins, so new veins may reappear in the same area or in other areas. Usually a touch-up treatment to remove new veins will be needed every 1-3 years.

Q: Will my insurance reimburse me?
A: The treatments and procedures performed for large varicose veins are covered by most insurance plans when deemed medically necessary (non-cosmetic). Spider veins are considered cosmetic and are not covered. Each insurance plan’s coverage is different and only upon receiving the claim will they make the final decision.

    More from Natanya

IAGT had Natanya's attention and we took advantage of it! We asked Natanya to share her favorite beauty products and daily beauty regime with us.

    BODY:
Vitamins – In order to maximize outer beauty, you must work on inner beauty. I am a health nut, so before I do my make-up, I eat a nutritious breakfast, something high in fiber or with whole grains to jump start my metabolism for the day and to feel fuller longer. I take a multivitamin, calcium. Women can only build up their calcium levels until around age 26 at which point they can only maintain levels. I take Omega-3 supplements on a daily basis. I sometimes throw in a Zinc / Vitamin C combo chewable tablet.

    SKINCARE:
Face Cream – If you have money to splurge, I recommend Ole Henricksen Sheer Transformation Renewing Crème (for AM & PM), which I follow with the Invigorating Night Gel Firming Treatment (PM. only). You only need to use the tiniest half-pea amount to notice a nearly immediate improvement in skin tone and softness. Even the gel is super light and sheer. It doesn't leave shine or stickiness. If you need something less expensive, I love anything from the Neutrogena Helioplex line. I use the untinted face moisturizer with SPF 30 on a daily basis to protect against wrinkles and sunspots and the best part is that it absorbs into your skin quickly and never looks or feels greasy. Eye Crème – My Blend Time Resistant Eye Crème for fine lines and wrinkles. I only use this crème in the PM, but it can be used in the AM as well if you want quicker results or have drier, more delicate or sensitive skin around your eyes.

    MAKEUP:
Concealer – Time Balm Concealer in Medium is amazing because it has skin-enhancing ingredients that illuminate natural skin pigments and repair fine lines. It can be applied in the AM and PM without clogging pores or getting a clumpy look. I use Bare Minerals Translucent Oil Absorbing Powder and a Bronzer / Blush combo, Nars Combination Palette with Laguna bronzer / Orgasm blush. Both have a slight shimmer. You will glow even in the middle of a New York winter! Mascara – Maybelline Volum' Express in Very Black was what I used when I first began college but then got into fancier mascaras. I just switched back to Volum' Express and get compliments on my lashes or asked "are those real?" from random strangers all the time. In fact, while covering the Golden Globes Gifting Lounge, Maria Menoudos made me turn sideways and close my eyes so she could inspect my lashes since she thought they were so long and fabulous! That scenario made my whole week!

    LIPCARE:
For Daily Lip care, I use Chapstick Lip Moisture, the blue one, since I am actually addicted to having some sort of balm on my lips. I prefer Chapstick brand to others because Chapstick feels thick and creamy and stays put the longest. Plus, the Lip Moisture one smells slightly like vanilla – my favorite scent. Lipgloss – For a a nighttime "kiss me" pouter or for daytime seduction, I love SKINN by Dimitri James Wet Shine Lip Gloss in Passion Fruit. It's super shiny and has a slight shimmer that makes lips look extra voluptuous.

    FRAGRANCE:
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. It's classy and musky yet refreshing and strong enough to only require one or two spritzes.

    HAIRCARE:
I try to avoid straighteners, blow-dryers, curlers, etc. because even if you use hair protectants and sprays, direct heat is very damaging. The truth is that hair does look better with these tools. You have less flyaways and more shine and volume, so I noticed I get addicted to the results, hence further damage my hair beyond repair. Shampoo / Conditioner – ANYTHING BY PANTENE PRO-V! Just like the ads say, "for hair so healthy it shines," and this is so true. Whether I'm using the line for extra volume, smoothness, deep conditioning, brunette expressions or whatever else they offer, my hair always ends up smelling great and feeling soft and fresh. Volumizing – I am a believer in the "bigger is better" motto when it comes to hair, so for "special occasions," I use Aquage Uplifting Foam or Big Sexy Hair Root Lift for extra volume and oomph. All you do is spray the foam at your roots when hair is damp. If hair is dry, then the foam makes it feel sticky and doesn't work as well. Then I blow-dry my hair upside-down until the roots are completely dry.

    Beauty Bits from Natanya Steelman

Take a stroll through any department store and you will find nearly an entire floor dedicated to beauty products. You will get whisked away in a color montage of shimmering eye shadows, lotions and crèmes whipped to perfection and, of course, the infamously overwhelming aisles of eau premieres, parfums and eau de toilette sprays, which to most of us, is simply called “perfume.”

But how much do you actually know about these products that have lured women to the point of no return to life without them? Welcome to the 123s and ABCs of Beauty! So, as Julie Andrews once sang, “let’s start from the very beginning…”

    1: The 1st of Many

There’s nothing ritzy about his line, yet, due to his innovative mind, Max Factor has changed the beauty world forever. Max Factor’s “firsts” began in 1914 when he created the first motion picture makeup, followed by lip gloss in 1930, “Pan-Cake Makeup” (the model for all modern compacts) in 1937, Pan-Stik Makeup in 1948, Erace (the original cover-up) in 1954, and finally, the first "waterproof" makeup in 1971. Oh Max, where would women be without you?!

    2: Placing 2nd by a Hair!

On average, women dedicate 20 minutes of “getting ready time” to applying makeup, which places 2nd to hair by 10 minutes and beats nails by 5 minutes. This means that throughout an entire lifetime, women spend over 1,000 hours dolling up their faces, which is 1,000 hours that men have to relax and enjoy life.

    3: Mascara, You Confuse Me

To replace or not to replace… that is he question! The lifetime of mascara has been through a great deal of debate – some advise that you replace it every six weeks, while others say you can keep a single tube for up to six months (assuming there’s even any liquid left at that point). The safest and most economical method is to opt for a replacement every three months, since longer only adds to the bacteria build up. Also, "pumping" the mascara in the tube should be avoided at all costs, as this introduces more air and therefore more bacteria that you then are adding to your eyes… yuck!

    A: “Ah, ah, ah ah-choo!”

Allergies are never fun, but they are even more frustrating when they have aesthetic affects. Today, most makeup and skin products are coined “hypo-allergenic,” but prior to Clinique, people with very sensitive skin could use few, if any, cosmetic products. Clinique was developed specifically to meet the needs of these individuals, which is done by testing all its products for allergic reactions (by applying it to 600 people 12 times, with a standard of zero reactions) and making sure they are 100% fragrance free.

    B: Blend, Blend, Blend

According to makeup artists, the #1 most important beauty tip is blending. The most mis-applied product is concealer, since women often use their fingers and then rub the makeup in circular motions. The pros prefer to first apply concealer with a concealer brush with short, sweeps toward the outer face. When working around delicate eye area, you may need to first apply moisturizer to reduce cakiness or seeping into fine lines and ease blending ability. If additional blending is necessary, use a latex sponge, once again, sweep outward.

C: “Something smells here – and it ain’t Chanel No. 5!”

Coco Chanel’s first fragrance, Chanel No. 5, was introduced to her friends on May 5, 1921. Not only has Chanel No. 5 become the most famous fragrance, quoted in films and endorsed by celebrities worldwide, but after Andy Warhol made his silk screens of the perfume, it became a cultural icon with its package placed in the Museum of Modern Art, NY in 1959.

    Take Note From Melanie Casserly

Before purchasing your next necklace be sure to take note of what Melanie Casserly, founder of Melliedesign, has to say!

“The two questions that I address when picking out a piece of jewelry for a friend or a customer are, do they look better in gold or silver and how long should the necklace be? To determine if gold or silver is right for you, you must determine your skin tone. Keep in mind this is a just an aid and sometimes personal preference wins out!”

  • Turn your wrist over and look at your veins. If they look more greenish, then your skin tone is warm. Veins that look more bluish suggest a cool tone.
  • Look at the natural color of your hair and your eye color. Cool skin tones usually include those with blue or green eyes and with blond, black or brown hair. Those with warm skin tones usually have brown, black or hazel eyes with brown, black, blond or red hair.
  • Observe in the mirror the effect that the silver or gold has on your skin and see which one is brighter or stands out more.

  • “If you have a cool skin tone, these colors look good on you, silver, blue, black and fuchsia. the deep, rich colors. Aqua blue and pure white most often are the perfect compliment to this skin tone.

If you have a warm skin tone gold, peach, coral, browns and bricks look great on you. You can wear all of the earth tones and muted colors. The earthy greens like moss, olive, grass and jade look great too”

When you look good in every color then you can wear silver or gold. Your skin has no obvious tone. You’re lucky!

Now the second question. What length of necklace should I choose and what do I wear it with?”

Here are some length recommendations to best match up your necklace with shirt and blouse necklines. Keep in mind though, that depending on your body, the length will hang differently with regard to the inches.”

  • 12 to 13 inch Collar necklaces: fall around the middle of the neck and look great with V-necks and off the shoulder styles.
  • 14 to 16 inch Choker necklaces: fall around the base of the neck. They are best for everyday wear. Chains, charms and lockets that are close to the neck work with any shirt and style.
  • 17 to 19 inch Princess necklaces: fall below the throat and work best with crew and high necklines but if you add an eye catching charm you can wear it with a plunging neckline.
  • 20 to 24 inch Matinee necklaces: fall at the top of the bust line. These are more casual chains and strands.
  • 28 to 34 inch Opera necklaces: fall at or below the bust line. These double or single strand necklaces are best suited for high or crew necklines.

  • “Again, your personal style affects your choices. If you chose a flashy necklace with lots of gems and charms you don’t want to compete with it so keep your outfit simple. On the other hand if your outfit is flashy then you will want to tone down your necklace so choose something more simple and classic.”

    Pearls of Wisdom

Dr. Mickey Bernstein, President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the largest organization of cosmetic dentists in the world, has this advice for IAGT, “Don’t ignore your dental health. The dangers of poor oral health are not only cosmetic but are a direct indicator of one’s overall health. Trips to the dentist are never a waste of time!”

Bernstein is a tenured dental expert and highly credited author who lectures all around the country on the latest dental findings. A true industry expert; Bernstein’s been in the dental field for over 33 years. He maintains a personal philosophy that people deserve to look their best and have a positive self-image.

  • Dr. Bernstein makes us aware of these 3 Dental Problems that may indicate greater health issues:
  • Pain, swelling and sores in the mouth could be an indicator of oral cancer. Sores should be evaluated and biopsied.
  • Bleeding Gums are nothing to ignore. Bleeding gums may indicate a need for a dental cleaning, but could also mean a loss of bone around the teeth, which could lead to tooth loss, or the presence of bacteria in the gums.

  • Bad breath can be a warning sign for medical problems such as acid reflux disease.

    Stay Fit Tips

According to Kristal Richardson, this holiday season, “women should keep the stuffing in the turkey and focus on portion control.” Many of Kristal’s female clients complain that they feel unpleasantly full after enjoying a Thanksgiving feast. Although women typically add healthier options to their plates, such as vegetables, it’s important for them to recognize that they may still be overeating.

Here is what Kristal says to do:

  • Take a long walk before and after the Thanksgiving feast!
  • Trade large portions of carb heavy stuffing and mashed potatoes with protein rich turkey and squash.
  • Drink a healthy supplement before the big meal to curb your appetite.

"Glam" Hair Tips from Tim Rogers

It's a Glam Thing was fortunate to get this great info from top NYC stylist & editorial spokesperson for Charles Worthington London, Tim Rogers. Tim “ups” the glam factor this coming season with essential how to’s for getting runway worthy styles in time for the holidays. Just a few twists and a dollop of professionally formulated products and you will be party-ready with perfect hair for the occasion.

    To get scruffy, bouffant updos.
Rock and Roll meets Victorian punk. Vamp it up this holiday season… and combine the best of both tradition and trend. Set clean hair on large electric or small velcro rollers. Use Charles Worthington London BIG HAIR Texturizing Salt Spray on the root of each sectioned roller setting to create texture and substance at the roots. Back brush the roots throughout the head using and ultrafine aerosol hair spray (try Charles Worthington London BIG HAIR Ultrafine Hairspray) on each brushing. The goal is to create a wispy, whimsical texture. Divide the hair in half, splitting at the crown between hair behind the ear and hair in front. Create a French twist using the back section. Integrate the front section using pins to create a fun, high party shape.

If you want a slicked high bow pony.
Ideal for going straight from the office to the holiday shindig, this sleek look is classic, polished sophistication with a “twist”. Prep hair using Charles Worthington London BIG HAIR Texturizing Salt Spray on damp, damp hair. Make pony by following the line of your jaw using a hand mirror.Twist the pony over to create a 'bow' effect. Good for longer layered hair, or one length hair.

    For shiny braids.
A modern take on the archetypal braid… that can be worn down or twisted into 'figure-8' over scaled chignon for and updated, slick style.Start with damp hair. Add a texturizing balm mixed with a gel for shine and control, I like Charles Worthington London Moisture Seal Leave-in Conditioner or BIG HAIR Amazing Finishing Balm. If your hair is shorter than your collar bone, consider a ponytail 'switch' extension. Make a pony, add the extension that has been color matched in daylight, dampened with water and with balm/gel mix added. Pin the extension into the ponytail band holding your own hair in place using large bobby pins. Divide the combined hair into three sections and braid conventionally. If you choose to wear the pony down and slick, considering adding a hairline gripping bandeau OR make figure-8 chignon by twisting the hair into shape and securing with long hair pins for an update on the popular chignon.

(Can you believe this? All Charles Worthington London products retail for $5.99 at drugstores!).

    Start with an Alluring Smile

By: Dr. Cartise Austin, Cosmetic Dentist at VIP Smiles, NY

October is National Dental Hygiene Month This is a time to reconsider your oral health habits and to consider enhancing your smile. Cosmetic dentistry can give you a great smile. A hint: One of the secrets to having a smile like the stars is to have a clean, healthy looking mouth.

Today's dental hygienists no longer solely clean patients' teeth. A contemporary hygienist is responsible for detecting oral cancer, examining cracked crowns, and promoting the benefits of cosmetic dentistry to the patient before the dentist ever looks in the mouth.

Regular professional visits are important because gingivitis, the early stage of periodontal disease, is usually painless and patients may not be able to detect it on their own. Don't ignore the warning signs of gum disease which are; red, swollen or tender gums; gums that bleed with brushing; and recurring bad breath – these are all key signs of gum disease. In my practice, 75% of my new patients have gum disease and didn't have a clue until we assessed the health of their gums!

Here’s the 4-Step Gum Evaluation a dentist should perform on each and every patient:

Step 1 -- A thorough evaluation of each tooth checking for cavities, defective fillings, and tooth mobility.

Step 2 -- Check the gum tissues for redness, swelling, abscesses, as well as for oral cancer lesions.

Step 3 – Take X-rays to detect hidden tartar and bone loss due to gum disease.

Step 4 - Measure the spaces between the teeth and gums (these are called "pockets") to see if the pockets are shallow, cleansable, and do not bleed upon touch (healthy gums); or if the pockets are deep, trap food and bacteria, and bleed upon touch (unhealthy gums).

Based on the results of this examination, a dentist should be able to make an accurate diagnosis of a patient's gums and customize a professional gum therapy plan for that individual.

Fortunately, early gum disease such as gingivitis is completely reversible with professional treatment and oral home care. Brushing frequently, and most importantly flossing (keeping those pockets cleaned), are good habits I suggest all patients do between visits because major improvements in their smile are inevitable.

Visiting a dental hygienist and dentist team, every six months or as scheduled, is vital in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. If left untreated, early gum disease can lead to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis, which can result in tooth loss and other life threatening health problems!

If you've been guilty of putting off your next dental exam and professional cleaning, consider visiting your dental hygienist and dentist team during this National Dental Hygiene Month to aid in creating that alluring smile!

“High heel feet”, is a term used by Manhattan podiatrist Dr. Oliver Zong to describe the associated conditions that often accompany the excessive wearing of ill-fitting, high heeled shoes. Dr. Zong describes the typical “high heel foot” as one that is triangular-shaped in the front like a high heel shoe. The big toe is pointing towards the little toes (bunion) and the pinky toe is pointed towards the big toe. The toes in between are often curled up (hammertoes) instead of straight and any or all the toes may have corns on them. There may even be a bump by the pinky toe called a bunionette or tailor’s bunion. It’s often the result of the foot taking the shape of the pointed-toed shoes their owners love, according to Dr. Zong. On top of that with the added pressure on the ball of the foot caused by heels, there are often numerous calluses present on the soles as well.

The average person takes 8-10 thousand steps a day. Multiply that by 365 days a year, over a period of 10, 20, or more years and imagine the pounding and wear and tear that your feet undergo. Being in Manhattan Dr. Zong has seen his share of patients who have complaints from wearing high heels. “In the city, walking is often the only way to get around”, states Dr. Zong, “and since the pavements are not too forgiving, your shoes had better be.” Dr. Zong feels that excessive walking in ill-fitting shoes can turn a minor foot problem into a larger one. For example a small bump, bunion, or hammertoe that can be easily accommodated in a more comfortable shoe, may become unforgiving in a tight, pointed-toe shoe.

Over time with continued stress and pressure being applied to your feet, they can literally start to change shape. While the cause of the deformities may not solely be caused by shoegear, ill-fitting shoes can definitely exacerbate the situation. “Wearing proper shoes may not completely prevent foot problems from occurring, but wearing the wrong shoes can make foot problems worsen or occur sooner than they normally would have” adds Dr. Zong.

    What can you do?

Once these conditions are present, they are unlikely to go away on their own. Conservatively, you can wear more sensible shoes. Shoes that are squared off are better than shoes that are pointy. If you already have a deformity, then you’ll need a shoe with more room to accommodate your foot. But if you still insist on wearing high heels, Dr. Zong recommends common sense: wear them in moderation, and definitely not for walking long distances. Soaking your feet or getting whirlpool treatments can also feel good. In some instances, you may have to see your doctor, especially if pain is involved.

Commonly, foot surgery is performed for these conditions. It may be to get rid of a bunion, or straighten out some toes, to get rid of corns, or to alleviate pain. Dr. Zong adds that in the worst conditions he performs what he calls “a forefoot smash” in which all toes are straightened along with the bunion and bunionette all at once. “No one likes to have surgery but sometimes it is the best course. Sometimes your foot can become so traumatized that the only way to walk pain-free or even to fit into your shoes is to have surgery.” Dr. Zong cautions that surgery is not for everyone. “You should consult with your doctor before making any decision.”

Dr. Oliver Zong is a podiatrist in Manhattan’s influential Financial District. As one of the premier cosmetic foot surgeons in the country, he serves as the Director of Surgery at NYC Foot Care and is on the Board of Directors at Gramercy Park Surgery Center. Year Round Sun Protection

Elizabeth K. Hale, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist and an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine, shares these year-round sun protection tips with us...

  • Protect your Face – While arms and legs are generally covered during cool seasons, your face is one part of the body that can receive year-round sun exposure. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen and apply it to the face, neck and chest before leaving the house.

  • Don’t Forget the Hands – If you aren’t wearing gloves, the skin on your hands is just as susceptible to sun damage as the skin on your face. Smoothing on a sunscreen lotion daily may help moisturize dry skin and can help protect the skin from unintentional damage, helping to prevent premature skin aging.

  • You’re Never “Above” Damaging Sun Rays – Whether you are hiking up mountainous terrain or speeding down the slopes, the sun’s rays become stronger as altitude increases. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV exposure increases 8-10% for every 1,000 feet of elevation; therefore, choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF. Skiers are especially susceptible to “goggle burn” as the snow reflects 80% of UV rays.

  • Be Sun Smart – UV rays are present year-round, reflecting off water, concrete and sand. The sun is the strongest between the hours 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Some after-school sports take place when UV rays are strongest, so whether you are playing on the field or watching from the bleachers, it’s important to protect yourself from potential sun damage.
  • Make Sunscreen a “Family Affair” – Most parents understand the need to protect their children from the sun. According to the 2008 Coppertone “Sun IQ” survey, 82% of parent respondents agreed it is important that their children use sunscreen with an SPF above 30. Unfortunately, these parents are not practicing what they preach as 45% were not using sunscreen themselves. To encourage healthy sun habits for the whole family, keep a bottle in the bathroom and next to the door for easy, on-the-go application.

    Princess Style

Written by : “Mompreneur” and creator of The Dapper Baby, Nicole Buchanan.

As we look toward Spring 2009, what have we learned from Fashion week? What came across loud and clear is that Spring 2009 design reflects a throwback to several eras however circa 1984 seems to be an underlying time in style that has invigorated many a designers’ collection. It is very interesting to see the enormous irony of the situation but as we manage through challenging economic times our dress reflects a very relaxed, loose fitting but for the cinched waist silhouette. Our color palette is a mix of muted shades consisting of anything from sandy beiges and pinks to earthy browns and greens. Throw in splashes of bright color including our purple carryover from fall, yellow green, persimmon and some floral prints and you will capture the essence of the season.

By nature, trends are not for everyone but everyone likes to at least know about them and maybe even try them once.

Here five notable trends that were spotted from one collection to the next:

    1) The re-introduction of the harem pant from Marc Jacobs to Miss Sixty – not the 'I Dream of Jeanie' version or even the MC Hammer adaptation but an updated version of the draped and billowy pant incorporates fun prints and textured fabrics.

    2) Flouncy tiered skirts have us covering more than seasons past. Super sexy.

    3) The one shoulder asymmetrical look showed up in almost every collection with varying interpretations for dresses, blouses and even jumpsuits.

    4) The one-piece jumpsuit. Short or long this updated 1970’s style is back.

    5) The platform shoe is a spring wardrobe staple. From the metallic sandal to the solid color shoe, the platform is a great way to get height with a comfortable wear due to the stability it provides.

So after this trend report you ask “how does this translate to style for my princess and what will our kiddy style icon Suri Cruise wear in the Spring?” Well, I have had the privilege to preview many of the spring lines for the children’s premium designers and the color palette has simply transcended categories. So we will probably see Suri in various shades of pink, taupe, grey and fun flowery prints in earthy greens and browns. She will probably be sporting liberty prints incorporating purples, blues and fresh looks in crisp white blouses with tiered sleeves and ruffled collars. She will show up in style wearing one piece pant jumpers long and short, solid and print, pairing as appropriate with metallic ballet shoes, sequined high top sneakers or rain boots. Since the tiered skirt will be de rigueur expect to see Suri rocking it in her prettiest pose

Get “Red Carpet Ready” with AJ

I have to confess, when I walk a Hollywood Red Carpet, I often rely on a wardrobe stylist and a hair and makeup artist to look my best.  You have to in Tinsel Town because photos can be so unforgiving.  However, life is not always a Red Carpet.  There are many times when a girl needs to look her best and she finds herself without a team of experts to help her out!

Here are some simple tips to remember when you find yourself in a situation where you have no time to look your best.  These are for the times you wish you would have had some warning to be a little more “Red Carpet Ready” for those everyday social situations life throws at you…

    1. Always keep a pair of strappy heels in your car trunk.  Strappy heels are a must for going from day to evening.  A nice pair of strappy heels can spruce up a pair of jeans or loosen up a business suit where perhaps during the day you had to wear some conservative pumps.  Strappy heels make any gal look taller, leaner and a little bit of skin around the foot and ankle can be very sexy.

    2. Keep a supply of cosmetics in your purse.  You need to refresh your face during the course of the day anyway.  If you forget your blush, the old trick our grandmothers taught us about dabbing a little lipstick on our cheeks and rubbing may seem archaic but it is better than nothing in a pinch!  Also, if you forget your eyebrow brush, a toothbrush will help to brush out the eyebrows.  Add a little hairspray to the brush first and it helps to hold the combed-out brows in place.  (I would recommend throwing the toothbrush out afterwards).

    3. There is nothing worst than getting ready to walk into a room and finding a grey hair, especially if you have dark hair.  A great way to cover up a little grey on the spot is by using a little black mascara.  You can paint it on the trouble spot and presto- the grey is gone.

    4. When taking photographs, always take a quick look in the mirror to make sure you don’t have any food stuck in your teeth.  Also, there is nothing more unattractive than having lipstick on your teeth.

    5. When taking photographs, never stand straight into the camera.  It can make even the thinnest girl look heavier.  Always stand at an angle with one foot in front of the other.  Look at old photos from the 40s and 50s where every woman universally knew how to stand this way.  Women back then really knew about glamour and how to look their best.  There is a reason this “photo stance” still exists- because it works!

    6. Always carry a little powder or blotting papers with you.  You never want to be caught looking shiny especially when outside in the summer or when you are in a stuffy room.  If you don’t have something to take away the shine, go in the ladies room and grab a toilet seat protector from the holder on the wall.  Rip off a tissue size piece and use it as a blotting paper.  The material used to make it is very similar to a blotting paper.  Sounds silly but it works great!

I hope you enjoyed learning about some of my Quick Last Minute Tips for Looking “Red Carpet Ready” for Any Occasion.  Feel free to pass these tips on to your girlfriends.  It’s a tough world out there and we gals need to stick together!

    Medi Spa in Tampa, FL.

The folks at It's a Glam Thing (IAGT) are huge fans of Stunning Looks Medi Spa in Tampa, FL. Kristen Thornley Walsh, A.R.N.P., M.S.N is the star there. She is so knowledgeable and runs the show. I caught up with her recently while waiting in between services. I asked her a few questions and I'll share her answers with you here.

IAGT: What are the medi-spa's three most popular procedures?
Kristen: BOTOX Cosmetic, Laser Skin Resurfacing and Injectable Fillers.

IAGT: What are benefits of these procedures?
Kristen: BOTOX Cosmetics is one of the most popular and effective treatments for facial lines and wrinkles. BOTOX injections smooth the signs of aging by relaxing underlying facial muscles. BOTOX Cosmetic can take years off of the face's appearance by eliminating frown lines, crow's feet, and other minor facial wrinkles. It temporarily paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

Laser skin resurfacing uses laser energy to rejuvenate the skin and reduce the effects of aging, sun damage, and facial skin imperfections on the skin's surface. Also known as a laser peel, this procedure utilizes a safe, effective laser to dissolve the molecular bonds of damaged skin cells until a smoother, more uniform skin appearance is revealed. We use advanced laser skin resurfacing techniques to remove damaged outer layers of skin and stimulate new skin cell production of collagen to create smoother, younger, healthier-looking skin.

Fine lines, and other visible signs of aging have long been an unavoidable reality. Now cosmetic injectable fillers provide new forms of non-surgical facial rejuvenation and wrinkle treatment. We offer a range of cosmetic injections and dermal fillers including Juvéderm, Restylane, Radiesse, ArteFill and Sculptra that increase volume, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin's overall contour.

IAGT: What if any are are the possible side effects of these procedures?
Kristen: The most common side effect of Botox injection is a pin-point bruise which is usually avoidable if ice is held to the skin prior to injection. In rare cases a patient can have lid lag or brow heaviness due to the Botox placement. These side effects are always temporary and rare if Botox is performed by an experienced injector.

The most common side effects of lasers is redness and swelling. In rare cases, a patient can have bruising, blistering or pigmentary changes which usually resolve within a few days to possibly a few weeks.

The normal side effect post filler injection is transient redness and swelling. A small pinpoint bruise is also possible and usually easily hidden with make-up.

IAGT: What is the down time, if any, with these procedures?
Kristen: For Botox, in just a few minutes, the injections are complete. Results can be seen immediately with complete results showing after just a few days. Follow-up treatments are recommended within four to six months. The recovery period following BOTOX treatment is typically very brief. Although patients should refrain from participating in particularly strenuous activities for 24 hours, they can resume most normal activities immediately.

With Laser Skin Resurfacing, the length of the procedure ranges fifteen minutes to one hour, depending on the size of the treated area. The recovery time for laser skin resurfacing patients varies depending on the type of laser used and aggressiveness of the treatment. However, there is generally no downtime associated with Harmony or Fraxel® laser treatments, and patients can expect to return to their normal activities almost immediately after the procedure. Redness, swelling, and minor irritation sometimes develop, producing an overall sensation similar to mild sunburn; these effects usually last no longer than four or five days.

And, with injectable fillers, the recovery is generally very easy and there is normally no downtime. Patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after treatment and may only experience minor swelling for about 24 hours.

IAGT: What age group do you see getting these procedure?
Kristen: Our most popular age group for all procedures is late 30's to mid 60's and we see both men and women getting these procedures.

BOTOX®, Juvéderm™, Restylane®, Radiesse®, ArteFill® and Sculptra™ are trademarks. See what else is happening at the Stunning Looks Medi Spa: www.veincentertampa.com

Keeping Your Tummy Trim Over 40!

It seems the number one question women over the age of 40 are asking us is how to keep their tummy's fit and trim, and avoid that dreaded middle-aged bulge. There are a host of contributing factors, ranging from behavioral to biological that can promote weight gain of the mid-section. However, there may be a few other unsuspecting culprits lurking in the foods we eat everyday. These ingredients masquerade under indiscernible chemical names and are none other than food additives.

We caught up with Diane Manning , President of LABELWATCH.com to get the real scoop on additives. LABELWATCH.com is the first and only website that compares the additives, ingredients and nutritional facts in foods. In short, the site takes the guesswork out of deciphering food additives and helps people choose the best brand-name foods for themselves and their family. Here's what we learned from Diane and her groundbreaking web site.

It is important to understand that many food additives are not only harmless, but are also necessary to ensure a healthy food supply. However, there are a few we should all avoid, especially once we near that big 40-year mark. The following additives have been shown to have a toxic or even carcinogenic, biological effect that may result in bloating, digestion problems and other metabolic disorders. The end result for many is unwanted and unnecessary weight gain that lands right in the mid-section for many.

LABELWATCH.com's Top Five Additives To Avoid For People 40+

    1. Chlorine
We all know chlorine is a bleaching agent used to remove stains from our clothes, but what you may not know is it's also used to bleach our foods, primarily refined flour. As a food additive, this agent has been linked to a chemical reaction in the body that has been shown to destroy beta cells in the pancreas, which in turn can promote diabetes. Use of chlorine as a food additive is not allowed in the European Union due to these health concerns. Bleached white flours (such as enriched wheat flour) have been linked to bloating, weight gain and digestive problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) especially in people who are sensitive to wheat. So, reach for products that are chlorine-free and contain only 100% whole grains.

    2. Benzoyl Peroxide or Calcium Peroxide
This additive is commonly used as an acne and antifungal medication, and as an antiseptic in many cough medicines. Peroxides are also used as chemical-bleaching agents in refined flours, dairy products, starches and rice. There is growing concern that foods containing peroxide agents may leave trace amounts of benzene (a known carcinogen) when baked. It's true that the level of benzene that forms during the baking process is quite small (which puts consumers at a very low level risk of cancer) but it's best to avoid any risk. Look for products that are free of peroxide bleaching agents.

    3. Potassium Bromate
This additive is used to expand the volume and refine the texture of bread. In the baking process, bromate for the most part breaks down to form a benign bromide. There is concern, however, that bromate bas been linked to cancer in animals, and therefore any residual bromate remaining in foods could be problematic. Most importantly, bromate has been banned virtually worldwide except in Japan and the United States. It is rarely used in California because a cancer warning might be required on the label. Therefore, look for breads and baked goods that are made with non-bromated whole grain flours.

    4. Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
MSG is an amino acid that's used as a flavor enhancer in many foods. Studies conducted in the 1960s, revealed that large amounts of MSG fed to infant mice destroyed nerve cells in the brain. As a result of these studies, public pressure forced baby-food manufacturers to eliminate use of MSG in their products. In addition, many studies have shown that some people are sensitive to MSG. Complaints include bloating, headaches, nausea, weakness, wheezing, increased heart rates, and burning sensation on skin. So, choose products that use natural seasonings and herbs to enhance flavor, instead of chemicals.

    5. Sodium Nitrite (Sodium Nitrate)
Sodium nitrite or nitrate gives cured meats that nice red color. Unfortunately, nitrites/nitrates in food can lead to the formation nitrosamines, a potent cancer-causing chemical. In fact there have been several studies that have linked the ingestion of these additives by children, pregnant women, and adults with various types of cancer. While the scope of these studies have not, beyond a reasonable doubt, proven that eating nitrites/nitrates causes cancer, it's best to just avoid them. Therefore remember to reach for Nitrite/Nitrate-Free bacon, sausage and other cured meats.

The good news is that by eliminating these undesirable additives that interferes with metabolic function, we not only promote a healthier body, but we may also eliminate some of those undesirable pounds as well. As we age, or better yet at every stage of our life, it's best to avoid any potentially harmful food additives. As a standard rule of thumb, remember to reach for minimally processed, wholegrain products, fresh fruits & vegetables, lean proteins, and "good" fats such as mono & polyunsaturated fats to help keep you healthy, vibrant and fit into your forties and beyond.

    Hot Pants Cosmetics

It's a Glam Thing (IAGT) caught up with Brooke Boles recently and learned that she has some exciting things going on including a new baby girl! Here is some history on Brooke and her company.

Created in 2003 by Brooke Boles, Hot Pants Cosmetics is a flirty line of fashion inspired makeup that has been winning the hearts of celebrities and makeup artist since its launch.  Brooke is an actress and model who has made numerous TV appearances and has been featured in top beauty magazines. She has appeared on QVC with the Hot Pants Cosmetics line .  Most recently she has taken on the role of  Mom to a beautiful baby girl! Brooke created Hot Pants with the goal of turning each woman’s beauty routine into a journey of creative and fashionable expression.  IAGT asked Brooke for some advice on making the proper make-up color choices. She reminds us that makeup is an accessory like a belt or bracelet.  "It should compliment the fashion choice regardless of the season and must work with the total look. Most importantly, you must know your best colors.  The way to do this is try different color swatches on to see which colors make you look alive and which colors make you look drab.  Focus those lively colors into your makeup wardrobe," says Brooke. She loves color on the eyes! "The Op Art Mineral Collection creates endless color combinations from twenty one products for the eyes and lasts 8 to10 hours with no creasing."  She told us about these two beautiful color combinations that have been showing up on the runways and how anyone can incorporate them into their wardrobe.

Rose and Gold:  "Start by applying the Hot Pants Illusion Clear Eye Base to the entire lower eyelid to prevent Pigments from creasing. Next, sweep Rococo (rose) Pigments on lower lid and blend into crease.  Then, layer Gothic (gold) shadow in the middle of the lower lid to make the whites of the eye pop.  Blend Buttercream on the brow bone as a highlighter. For a look like you just ate a strawberry, try Lip Lust in  Tongue Tie."

Lavender and Smokey Silver:  "Apply the Hot Pants Illusion Grey Base to the entire lower eyelid to prevent Pigments from creasing and to add more depth.  Next, apply Fauvism (lavender) pigments in the inner corner of the eye to the middle of the eyelid.  From the middle of the eyelid to the outer corner, sweep Vorticism (smokey silver) to create a soft wing.  Trace the outer lower lash line with Vorticism for more intensity.  Highlight the brow bone with Minimalism (pearlescent beige).  Lips should be sheer and nude with Lip Lust in  Gold Rush."

    Dream Bathroom

Image you can have your dream bathroom now and one of America's top designers can design it for you! Los Angeles' Elina Katsioula-Beall (MFA, CKD) of DeWitt Designer Kitchens started designing in her native Greece. Her design journey took her to Hollywood where she embarked on a career in theater, television and film. Elina has earned numerous theatrical awards and three Emmy Nominations as an Art Director to the Oscars. She is president of DeWitt Designer Kitchens in Studio City, CA. It's a Glam Thing (IAGT) asked Elina to share one of her bathroom designs with us. She tells us about a Los Angeles client's design wishes and how she made them come true.

“A spa of my own – to relax and decompress” was the request of the single, over-stressed Los Angelino artist for her new, in-progress house. An ardent lover of space and simple, monumental elements, she wanted the bathroom suite of her new house to bring forward soothing, “green” materials and evoke the outdoors.

As key materials, we chose pebbles and bamboo to set the “green mood,” and had them rest on a bed of quiet roman travertine. Silver vein-cut travertine for the counters is accentuated by recycled sage glass tile, framing the mirror, and reappearing in the shower wall and shampoo alcove.

Thinly streamlined bamboo cabinetry for her vanity and make-up area responds to her eco-friendly style and grants storage for toiletries, cosmetics and jewelry. The bamboo, in tile form, covers the tub deck and moves on the floor to frame a stone mat consisting of eight hand-selected, pattern-forming travertine tiles.

The protagonist is the wall behind the bath tub, a natural tapestry of sand-colored pebble rocks which offers the spa-like backdrop she longed for. Slim Italian sconces wash its stunning texture with a hidden halogen source, so that the light does not come directly in her eyes while she is bathing. There is a large shower for 2 people with 6 shower heads and a built in stone bench.

Personalized to her tall, slim figure, the vanity vessel sinks and faucets sit proud on the countertop, and though unexpectedly high, they seek to become proportionate to the monumental, recessed mirror. Recessed halogen lighting and additional sconces dim to the correct level in order not to compete with the soft candlelight glow.

This “spa of her own” is now her home –a home where she can soak in the bath tub and wash away the dust of Los Angeles and the stress of her days. - Elina

    Top 10 Skin Care Rules

Recently It's a Glam Thing caught up with mother, model & actress Monica Olsen of SKIN by Monica Olsen. We were introduced to her new organic and chemical free skin care line. Monica shared her Top 10 List of Skin Care Rules to Live By. Here it is!

    1. Before applying makeup, start with a clean palette. Clean and moisturized skin helps prep the skin before the application of color. For a non-foaming cleanser, try RESTORE MSM Facial Cleanser.

    2. Take a daily multivitamin. Plant-based multivitamins are the best because they actually get absorbed into the blood system because the body recognizes them as food. Try CLEANSE which promotes internal balance.

    3. Throw out any beauty products that contain alcohol. Alcohol dries out your skin and can cause flaking. Plus, it’s a free radical that causes skin irritation and allergic reactions. For your deodorant needs, DRY Antiperspirant and Deodorant is aluminum and alcohol free.

    4. Same thing for anything containing urea. Urea is animal urine. Do you really want that on your face or body? Urea is used because it gives a nice, silky feel to skincare products, but there are natural ways to get that feeling.

    5. Avoid excessive sun exposure and wear sun protection all the time, not just when you are on vacation. I have a great product called SAFE Waterproof Sun Protection which is all-natural sun protection. Also for the “war on wrinkles” I urge you to use THE CURE Wrinkle Reducer which has higher levels of CoQ10, Argireline, and Matrixyl then most and it also uses a special liposome delivery system.

    6. Avoid anything with parabens. Parabens can cause skin irritation and have been found in breast tumors.

    7. Drink lots of water. I’d say about 8 glasses a day.

    8. Be a discriminating consumer. Do your homework and read the ingredients labels of all the products you haves. For additional information, check out skinbymonica.com. I have compiled a list of additional ingredients to avoid.

    9. Remember that your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside, be aware of what you consume.

    10. Love yourself & check out www.skinbymonica.com & improve your skin, hair, and ambiance.

    About Rosie Johnston

It's a Glam Thing (IAGT) has been hearing so much great stuff about Rosie Jane Cosmetics and founder Rosie Johnston. We were able to secure some time with Rosie for a quick Q&A and here is what we learned:

IAGT: How did you get your start in the industry?
Rosie: I finished makeup school and had just moved to London. I was working part time in a video shop, a photographer walked in talking about how he was going to be shooting Kylie Minogue next week and I asked him if he needed a makeup artist. Everything started from there.

IAGT: What would you tell a woman who feels like she is hopeless at applying makeup?
Rosie: Not to give up. A lot of brands make it pretty confusing when it comes to choosing products and then applying them. Try starting with some basics…mascara, cream blush and lip gloss. As your confidence builds, start adding some more products, eyeliner, eye shadow, etc.

IAGT: Is there an easy way for women who wear glasses to apply eye makeup?
Rosie: Try doing it with a dual hand mirror. One side magnified the other normal. You can hold the mirror as close as you need to. Do one eye at a time if need be. Also try going for products that are goof proof, like the Rosie Jane Eye Define. You can practically be blind and still make this liner work for you.

IAGT: Who is your favorite celebrity to work with?
Rosie: Probably Poppy Montgomery because she's my sister so we always have a lot of fun together.

IAGT: Tell us about the new Eye Define that just came out?
Rosie: Eyeliner is the hardest cosmetics product to master. Realizing that the most common eyeliner is black, I wanted to add a natural and unique spin on the typical black eyeliner. 'Night' is a slightly shimmery smokey black, so the line it creates is not as harsh. It’s a more natural finish and with the angled tip, it is so easy to use and get a really defined look.

IAGT: What are some tricks for women to look polished but not overdone?
Rosie: When it comes to makeup, to me less is always more. Women should just be defining what they have. Always keep it simple. Normally a good coat of mascara, pink cheek, and flushed lip is all you need to look pulled together and radiant.

IAGT: What is the biggest makeup mistake women make?
Rosie: Not wearing mascara even when they have naturally dark lashes. Or getting all dressed up and only putting lipstick on, with no other makeup. Makeup is just as important to your overall look as the outfit you choose to wear.

IAGT: How can women use makeup to look younger?
Rosie: Keep your lip color light; just try using a natural lip liner and a tinted gloss. Dark colored lipsticks tend to make women look older. Don't wear too much and just keep it simple.

IAGT: Do you have any secret application tips to share with us?
Rosie: Try using a white iridescent eye shadow just in the inner corner of your eyes. It gives an instant pick me up and looks stunning.

IAGT: Anything you would like to add?
Rosie: Just remember makeup is all about layering. Start with less and build from there.

    Summer Skin Care Tips

Recently, It's a Glam Thing caught up with soap star turned Emmy award nominated make-up artist & founder of (true) PROMISE skin care, Gail Johnson. We asked Gail to share some of her expert advice with us. Here is what Gail has to say about summer facial skincare.

"Summer is my favorite time of year! It's hot, sunny, there are vacations, parties and everything's outdoors. There's one problem. Your skin and summer have a love, hate relationship. Here are some simple tips to follow to keep your summer skin happy, healthy, beautiful and wrinkle free. I know, I know. We hate the feel of heavy, greasy sunscreen, especially on our face. It's sticky, slimy and thick. But the choice of not wearing sunscreen or low spf leaves us with sun damaged, prematurely aged, wrinkled, spotty pigmented skin and that's not an option either. We've all seen otherwise beautiful girls who have such damaged body & facial skin that the deep lines, dehydrated skin and creases are evident even when they make the slightest gesture.

Take the highest SPF broad spectum UVA-UVB waterproof sunblock you can find. Personally, I like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch. Before applying, spray your skin with a liquid moisturizer that contains NA-PCA or Hyaluronic Acid. I like Focus 21 all purpose skin & hair moisturizer. This will do two things. The spray will let the sunscreen glide on easily so it won't be thick, greasy or heavy and the sunscreen will act as a shield to hold these vital moisturizing nutrients on the skin. It's a win, win situation. This is also a good time to start conditioning yourself to wear small traces of sunscreen under your eyes and on the eyelid itself. Get used to it. Pat it on gently, obviously avoiding any area too close to the eye. Krinkled skin on eyelids screams sun damage and age. Plus, the sunscreen mixture will act like a primer for any mineral makeup/powder/foundation you choose to wear over it. Now, go outdoors, have fun and be gorgeous! Happy summer."

    Christopher Hopkins, The Makeover Guy

Not long after my second appearance on Oprah, a woman flew to Minneapolis from Virginia for a makeover. She was a 54-year-old pastor’s wife who had grown her hair for six months to “give me something to work with.” We didn’t click at first. She seemed to contradict herself, explaining she liked the length (which was almost to her shoulders and very layered) but wanted to look classy. She didn’t want a color change (it was salt and pepper), but wanted to look more youthful. She wanted easy care and to look natural, but she enjoyed setting it in hot rollers and the feel of moving, voluminous hair. She then wanted me to tell her what I would do if she hadn’t said anything.

Guess what. She needed to go short and blonde. She dragged her feet and was extremely indecisive. There was more going on here than just a haircut. After much repetitious dialogue, I pulled out my last stop, which usually goes something like, “Well, you flew all the way here for a makeover. You can go home looking basically the same, or you can look great. Which do you want?”

“To look great,” she replied tentatively. “Then you need to let go and let me make it happen.” She agreed but with trepidation, which is not the best way to begin a new look. So, with more than a little concern, I spun her away from the mirror and began to cut her hair. First the nape, then the sides. When I turned her back toward the mirror, she began to cry. “What’s wrong?” I asked while taking deep, cleansing breaths. “I don’t know why I am crying,” she said.

Having gained the attention of much of the rest of the salon, I tactfully tried to find out what was bothering her. “I’m so embarrassed,” she whispered. “Wait, I’m not embarrassed. I’m crying because I love it! It’s as if you’ve unlocked part of me that has been missing for years!” With a sigh of relief, I turned to those pretending they weren’t really looking and said, “Happy tears, tears of joy—chat amongst yourselves.” Months later she sent me this letter:

    Dear Christopher,

On the 15th of January of this year, I came to your salon for the thrill and fun of a makeover. Little did I know you would work a ransom. Years ago, when I was a young girl, I remember walking into the local barbershop with instructions from my mother to get my hair cut and to make sure I told the barber that “the back must be shingled.” He did it, and I walked out a captive to the haircuts of ease and lost to any sense of style. Over the years, some forty-six of them, a cry has gone on inside me for just the right look, the one that would suit who I was. As I sat in your chair that Saturday morning, you worked your expertise and I began to cry: You were working a magic that made me feel like a butterfly coming out of a cocoon. I had been found. It’s now almost two months since that day, and my sense of wellbeing has been constant. I am so grateful to you. It may have been simply a pairing of face shape to hairstyle on your side of the chair, but on my side it was a touching of the soul.

Like many, this woman was sort of “in denial." Her mind was mixed with messages of aging gracefully vs. fighting it every step of the way. But at some point, often in my chair, a woman is literally face-to-face with reality. Her self-esteem and self-image inseparably intertwined. Studies confirm that strong self-esteem determines in large part our personal and professional fulfillment. Certainly, we all have good days and bad days, and days when we feel more assured than others. But managing the image you reflect in the mirror better equips you to face the day with confidence.

Love Your Color With Robert Bachelor

Sarah, our It's a Glam Thing "Get Glam" roving field producer/director, spoke with Celebrity Hair Stylist Robert Bachelor (Universal City, CA), who has worked with the likes of Helen Hunt, Eva La Rue & Mike Myers and has been featured in national fashion magazines, on national television shows such as Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition. Robert tells us how to "Get Glam" Hair Color that we'll LOVE!

IAGT: So tell us Robert, how do we get the hair color we want and love?
ROBERT BACHELOR: Stylists aren't mind readers and they don't have a crystal ball, so before any color is pulled from the shelf and mixed into the bottle, you and your stylist should be sharing the same vision. Good communication is the best way to get the hair color you've had in your mind's eye out of your head & on to your head. I believe pictures are one of the best ways to communicate color. Hence, a picture is worth a thousand words can be taken literally when it comes to coloring hair. Each of us perceive color differently and the words we use to describe color can have different meanings. Is a stick of butter yellow, cream colored, warm beige or the color of a pale winter sun? Now imagine how hard it would be to describe a specific color of red hair. Make certain you and your stylist/colorist are both "seeing" the same red. Bring pictures of your favorite color to your stylist/colorist. And the pictures don't have to be just hair! How about a picture of iced tea sitting in the sun to convey the concept of light golden brown or a picture of a gemstone, such as a Tiger's Eye, to convey the colors you want in your highlights! I had a client bring in a picture of a wheat field to describe the natural, earthy blonde she was looking for.

IAGT: Wow, that's such atypical advice! I've typically chosen my desired color from a hair color swatch.
RB: Hair color swatches can be useful as another visual aid but they are not the way to pick the final color formula. Ultimately, it is up to your stylist/colorist to mix the formula that will deliver the desired end result. Swatches are almost never made with human hair, instead they are manufactured by color companies to demonstrate approximations of their individual colors. They look, feel and reflect light quite differently from human hair. If your stylist looks at the swatch you have chosen, reads the back and says ...okay then, 7RO it is, you might be sitting in the wrong chair. It is vital that the stylist understands more then the basics of color. He or she should have the breadth and depth of experience in color mixing and equally as important, proper application techniques to bring your combined vision to life.

IAGT: Blending color and visions to create my perfect amber gold highlights: that sounds a bit like alchemy!
RB: It's really the Art of Color, although I've been called an alchemist. Just remember, we might not know what makes good art, but we do know what we like. There are many stylist/colorists out there, including me, who think of themselves as artists. We studied long and hard, attended fashion and hair shows, taken all the classes, and practiced our art on family, friends and manikin heads. We earned the right to think of ourselves as such. However, you, the Client, are our patron and the one we serve and not the other way around. Don't be intimidated or railroaded into something you don't want to wear. We are born with an innate sense of who and what makes us feel our best, so we should trust our instincts. A true artist will support and collaborate with you so the end result will be the most flattering and gratifying for you.

    Get Glam tips from Mezhgan

Warm nights, the smell of BBQ and thoughts of a splendid vacation are signs that summer is near. While we welcome the season with open arms our skin doesn't. Mezhgan, American Idol’s Hollywood makeup artist and creator of Me by {Me}zhgan cosmetics, shares some tips on how to stay protected from the sun while maintaining a fresh sun-kissed look. This is what Mezhgan has to say:

"Did you know 90% of wrinkles are caused by the suns rays? Don’t leave home without your sunscreen! Don't rely on the sunscreens that are in your cosmetic products and moisturizers for protection either. You should use a separate high SPF sunscreen for better protection. You can call it your own personal fountain of youth.

To get that sun-kissed look without the sun damage, use self tanners. There are so many good ones on the market now that there are no excuses for not using one. There is no more ooompa loompa orange. They have perfected the golden tan from a bottle. Pink cheeks are in for the summer. Dust a little on the apples of your cheek just to give you that fresh, in from the sun look. Bronzers! Gotta love bronzers! Keep one handy at all times. Don’t get me wrong there is no worse look than an over bronzed diva but it is the best beauty secret out there. Dust a little on the cheeks nose and forehead for an instant pick-me-up."

Mezhgan tells us these are 5 must-have items for your summer makeup kit.

  • an eyelash curler - "This is the best way to look awake after that summer party you went to last night!"
  • a bronzer - "Use your bronzer to give your foundation a little color as you get a little darker."
  • a dewy foundation - "Use one that gives you a healthy glow and brightens your skin. Try luminous {me} by Mezhgan foundation. http://www.mebymezhgan.com/
  • a nude gloss- "This gives you that barely there look!"
  • sunscreen- "Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Oh and did I say sunscreen?"

  • "Your makeup is always going to look it’s best if what’s underneath looks its best so protect it! Have a great summer and look good doing it! Check out my new cosmetic line Me by {me}zhgan at www.mebymezhgan.com and don’t forget to tell a friend about {me}!"

    Summer Hair Trends

It's a Glam Thing (IAGT) recently sat down with top Hollywood Hairstylist, Barry Halkides and asked the talented stylist about some of the hottest trends for Summer 2008.

    IAGT:
Barry, what do you think will be the hottest cut this summer?

    Barry:
"I still believe the ‘Victoria Beckham Bob’ will be hot for this summer. It has been around for a while but it is still going strong and women across American can’t get enough of it. Katie Holmes’ bob only reinforces this trend. Katie’s is similar to Victoria’s with the exception of very heavy fringe in the front. The current bob phase is only a trendy version of the classic bob that we have seen in decades past. It is simple, flirty, elegant and looks great on most women."

    IAGT:
What do you think about summer highlights?

    Barry:
"The blonder the better for the summer. As we transition into summer, think blonde, blonde and blonde. I recommend professional salon foils or if your hair is short, it can be biolaged. This is a color technique for shorter hair where highlight foil techniques are for longer hair. Always ask your stylist what is best for you. The one product I would recommend to everyone for protecting your color against the sun, ocean, lake and pool damage is the Soleil Line by Kerastase."

    IAGT:
Do women come in and sometimes want stylish cuts that perhaps are not appropriate for their facial structure?

    Barry:
"Yes, this happens a lot. There are styles that women want and I know that it won’t fit their face. The pictures they bring in are never what they will totally get. In general, women with narrow faces should go with shorter hair and women with rounder faces and bigger jaw lines should consider more mid length hair styles to below the shoulder. If you are polite and present photos and other ideas, most women will understand and follow your lead."

IAGT: Can you think of any other summer trend ideas that you want to mention?

    Barry:
"Yes! Ladies that have longer hair always look great in the summer with their hair slicked back into a ponytail. It is also practical for keeping you cool in the hot weather. My suggestion would be to put some sort of a wax or pomade that is pliable to slick back any sort of loose ends or baby hairs. I suggest Bumble & Bumble Styling Wax and New Bumble Spray de Mode."

    IAGT:
Anymore last minute tips for us?

    Barry:
"I recently found the BLO & GO on itsaglamthing.com. I tried it and it is one of the best products on the market. My clients have a hard time blowing their own hair out in between visits to me at the salon and so in between I encourage them to purchase this product. It holds their hair dryer and gives them both hands to use to style behind their hair which is hard to do. It’s only available on-line but soon it will be in retail stores as well. Great product and a useful tool."

    Pencil Me In Cosmetics

I love the look of soft pastel eyeliner but was not sure if it would look right on me. I asked Linda Eisner, founder of Pencil Me In Cosmetics what she thought. "Pastel pencils work for all skin tones. Apply the pencil in a thin line to your upper eyelid very close to your lash line." She suggests Pencil Me In’s Sky, Mint or Pink Lady. "At first it will seem like you are not applying enough color but after you apply your mascara you will be amazed at how the soft colors "pop" and show the beauty of your eyes. Apply the deeper more seductive shades under the eyes to help shape and complete the look." Try Pencil Me In's Boysenberry, Amethyst or Lapis. "There is no need to press hard or repeat the application when using our pencils as we use highly concentrated pigments."

    LA fashion week

After a whirlwind of LA fashion week wrapping up 3 shows, Monarchy, Bow & Arrow - by Alan De Rosario and the Flaunt Magazine closing show, celebrity wardrobe stylist and costume designer Michael Holdaway fills us in on the trends right now. "It’s a great time for fashion because almost everything is in." says Michael. " Every decade of trend is being showcased right now or has an influence on the runway. Dior is still heavily influenced by the 60’s mod, Galliano’s remake of the late 1800 Japanese peasant pant, Prada trying so hard to prematurely bring back 70’s elephant bell’s and a splash of 50’s still exists in Betsey Johnson and many other designers staples. It seems as though fashion has a main fashion artery of solid trend and then a bunch of veins leading off of that to accommodate every body type and style favorite.

For the main fall fashion artery every trendsetter, or style monger must have a double-breasted lightweight trench in his or her wardrobe. Whether it’s a beautiful vintage Burberry or a brand spanking new Dior, it is a must. Monarchy also is doing a ¾ trench at a reasonable price point that fits like a glove.

Accessories are a must this spring. A great lightweight spring scarf or ascot, bright cotton wrist gloves to match your outfit and a good bag. When I say good bag, I don’t mean luggage. I was on Rodeo Drive two days ago and saw a Blonde bombshell, about 5’2, 80 lbs, A size DD, with 6" heels who looked like she just stepped out of the playboy mansion walking in front of the Dolce store toting a bag that was 3 feet tall, 3.5 feet wide and about a food deep. It was ridiculous. Please make sure the bag you are carrying doesn’t look like it should be on wheels. If its big enough for you to get into its probably too big for you to carry.

Ladies, you want to make sure and put away your pointy boots and shoes for a while. They can be narrow but they should not be pointy. The same goes for the guys. A narrow shoe with a rounded toe is best. A hard point is not happening.

A good layering piece is still the vest. There are many vests out right now. In particular, Dolce came out with a 4-button vest with a lapel that was to die for.You can utilize it as a dressy look over a dressy button down shirt and a blazer over that or you can put it over a tee shirt with some skinny jeans, flats or tennis shoes and a good pair of sunglasses. Dress it up or down. You cant go wrong.

A good way to wear a tie if you are still going to wear one is that you take both ends of the tie in your right hand, the looped part in your left wrap it around your neck and put the ends through the loop. Let it hang. This will freshen up the tie if you’re going for a trendy look.

Also guys, go find yourself a good pair of lightweight beat leather, laced up boots with above the ankle to stuff your skinny jeans into. Another hot vintage item to mix into your wardrobe is beat up wingtip lace up shoes."

Have fun with your fashion. Feel comfortable. Wear it proud.

How to Look Great in a Photo

We got some expert advice from Celebrity Photographer Russell Baer on how to look great in a photo everytime! "It is possible to get great photos even if you are not at a professional fashion shoot. Start by practicing to find the best angle for your face but don’t be afraid to try something different once in a while as well. Everyone has a good side. It is always helpful to know this so you can be prepared when you know you are being photographed."

Russell lets us know that we must keep these basic things in mind. Always shift your weight when looking in a camera. That keeps you from looking stiff. Avoid standing straight on both feet. Try to get your eye level straight on the camera as well. This gives less chance of getting the double chin (too low) or the up the nostril shot (too high). Turning your hips to the side in a full length shot always makes you look slimmer. Avoid starring at the camera too long. That helps the photo to look fresh. Try to wait till the last minute so you bring your energy to the camera just before the shot is taken. When there is a flash, wail till the redeye delay from the camera goes then get ready for your shot.

If you know you will be having your photos taken always wear colors that accent your eyes. Choose clothes that best define your body type. Stay away from bulky sweaters or jackets. They usually photograph on the heavier side. If you are wearing something you don’t like then chances are you will dislike it even more in a photo.

If you are planning to have your photo taken for a family event or reunion, make sure you get a good night's sleep the night before. Have your makeup done by a professional to really make a difference. The biggest stars in Hollywood know that a great makeup artist is even more valuable than all the botox in LA. You can find a decent makeup artist at the Mac makeup counters in most cities if you do not have access to someone you know.

Most of all have fun in your photos. "The most successful shoots that I have done always had an element of fun and playfulness involved. Sometimes actors bring me candid snapshots of themselves at a party and wonder why they can’t capture this in a portrait session. The answer is simple. They were keeping it light and having a good time when this photo was taken."

Russell Baer has photographed many of the most famous faces in the world. Some of his subjects include Eva Longoria, Rachel Bilson, Mariel Hemingway and Martin Sheen. His celebrity portraits have been featured in most magazines on the stands today including Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, People, Elle, Time and Newsweek.

You can see his photos online at www.russellbaer.com
