5 Ways Ditching Alcohol Can Improve Your Complexion

Regular alcohol use deprives the skin of important vitamins and nutrients, which can lead to a less-than-healthy appearance over time. If you tend to overindulge in alcohol such as wine, margaritas, or hard liquor, here are seven ways that reducing your alcohol intake can approve your complexion and overall appearance.

1. Your skin will be more hydrated.

One of the many damaging side effects of alcohol abuse is dehydration. You know that nice, dewy glow every woman wants? Alcohol keeps us from getting it. It can also cause fine lines and wrinkles. Since alcohol is a diuretic, it can leave you dehydrated after just one night of heavy drinking. Dry flaky skin is a clear sign of dehydration and it’s not very flattering either.

2. You’ll revive dull, lifeless skin.

Alcohol impacts sleep, which means you’ll toss and turn and wake up with dull, lifeless skin the next day. Alcohol also contains a lot of sugar which leads to a duller complexion over time. When you give up the booze, you’ll probably find that your skin (especially your face) looks and feels a lot healthier overall.

3. You’ll get rid of red, blotchy spots.

Alcohol causes blood vessels in the skin to widen which allows more blood to flow closer to the surface of the skin. This leaves you looking flushed and blotchy. Red blotchy spots on your face can be irritating and annoying and attempting to cover them with layers of makeup can cause breakouts. Instead, just ditch the alcohol and watch them disappear.

4. Your dark spots will disappear.

A lifestyle of alcohol abuse is often paired with poor nutrition, which deprives your skin and body of important vitamins and minerals. Alcohol also inhibits your body’s ability to process what good vitamins and minerals you do get. A balanced, healthy diet that doesn’t include alcohol will drastically improve your skin’s appearance and make you look younger and healthier.

5. You’ll have fewer breakouts.

All that sugar in alcoholic beverages can lead to breakouts if you overindulge often, especially if your drink of choice is white wine or mixed drinks, which are high in sugar content. Sugar can instantly cause a breakout, which can take days or weeks to clear up. No one likes battling acne, but if alcohol is the culprit, expensive acne creams and medications are unlikely to permanently clear up your skin.

If you’ve noticed that alcohol has had a negative impact on your skin’s appearance, maybe it’s time to scale it back a bit. Who knows, as you learn how to practice mindfulness in sobriety, you may even find that you’re changing inside as well as out.
