How to Brighten the Skin Naturally

These years, more and more people are gaining new interest not only in revitalizing the appearance of their skin, but also in improving its overall health. This is, of course, a good thing, since the skin is not only an asset to one’s looks, but also a window to one’s wellbeing. After all, our skin serves vital physiological functions like protecting us from toxins and pathogens, regulating the body’s temperature, providing us with sensory information, and many others.

As such, achieving moisturized skin with a bright and healthy glow shouldn’t be thought of just as an act of personal vanity. Rather, we should see good skincare as something everybody should practice on a daily basis.

No matter what your skin type, complexion, or cosmetics preferences may be, brightening up your skin should be part of your daily skincare routine. That said, here are our tips to brighten your skin naturally and combat the unpleasant alternative of dry, dull, and oily skin—all without breaking the bank or overtly depending on pricey, chemical-laden solutions.

Invest in quality products and treatments for exfoliating your skin

Exfoliation is the process of removing dry, dead, and flaky cells from the surface of your skin. This process helps smoothen out any uneven spots, and returns the innate glow to the skin’s top layer. People typically turn to either of these two exfoliation methods: physical exfoliation, which involves removing the dead skin cells with the use of small grains (such as in scrubs), brushes, exfoliating fabrics, or scalpels (such as in dermaplaning); and chemical exfoliation, which uses chemical exfoliants like water-soluble alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and oil-soluble beta hydroxyl acids (BHAs) to break down the substance that holds layers of dead skin cells together.

We suggest beefing up your skin-brightening routine by including a little bit of both. For physical exfoliants, shop for scrubs whose grains are made out of natural sugars and salts. For leave-on exfoliants, we’d recommend additions to your skincare routine that are even milder than traditional chemical peels, just like the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask. The Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask contains anti-inflammatory white willow bark extract, antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract, and Vitamin C-rich beet root extract—all of which will exfoliate your skin without putting too much chemical strain on it, and treat it to an instant, brightening glow.

Make the most of your visits to the dermatologist

Another practical way to play it safe is to consult your dermatologist every so often. You might benefit from a more thorough, professionally executed method of treating your skin, such as microdermabrasion. Don’t worry because it’s minimally abrasive, and it can help minimize the appearance of dark spots, stretch marks, and sun damage on your skin. After a treatment like this one, don’t forget to cash in on your dermatologist’s “pro tips” on taking care of your skin.

Get creative with some time-tested home skincare remedies

At home, you can also supplement store-bought skin products and skin treatments with some good, old-fashioned, all-natural home skincare treatments. Some recipes out there can do as much good for us as they did for our mothers and grandmothers back in the day.

Some popular kitchen remedies that can boost and brighten the skin are honey, plain yogurt, oatmeal and tomato juice paste, and orange juice and turmeric paste. If anything, these natural home remedies are a breeze to make, wash off, and clean up after.

Pre-emptively combat the stress that causes skin imperfections

Not surprisingly, skin imperfections like acne are linked to stress via hormones. When you’re stressed, your body produces more of the hormone cortisol, which in turn may cause the glands under your skin to produce excessive oil. The oil, in turn, may be the culprit behind acne, blackheads, dark spots, and other demoralizing blemishes on the skin.

The best way to deal with these imperfections is to pre-empt the aggravating stressors—and that means staying hydrated, always getting a good night’s sleep, and taking a little time during the day to breathe or meditate. Trust us, this holistic approach will do wonders for brightening up your skin.

Follow a diet that’s as good for your skin and your overall health

We emphasize that you shouldn’t be thinking of your skin as one isolated part of your body. The things that will allow your whole body to heal and function naturally will also fortify your skin. Diet is one of the most important components here, and a skin-healthy diet is one that replaces excessive alcohol, processed dairy, grease, and caffeine with fruits, vegetables, and healthy proteins.

Quality skin treatment need not be expensive or over-the-top; brightening your skin shouldn’t mean pampering it all the time at the spa or piling layers of strongly formulated skin products on it. Instead, consider looking into nature when you need inspiration in restoring your skin’s natural health, glow, and functionality!

Things To Do On A Ladies’ Night That Don’t Involve Hitting The Bar and Getting Drunk.

It’s probably been a long while since the last time you went out with your girlfriends. You’re excited to meet them again and to have another night out with your closest friends. Then a realization suddenly dawns upon you—Oh no. Not another night out, drinking alcohol in a bar.

The thought of “just another night of drunken bliss” seems to lack the appeal that it once had. And that’s understandable. Things get pretty old pretty quickly after all. So, no, you aren’t going to cancel your night out, not at all. But you’re also unsure what else there is to do. A dreary cycle of bars and drunkenness is bound to get boring really fast.

Well, we’ve got you. These are some fun alternatives that should not only keep your night fun and lively, but also provide a lot of opportunities to deepen your bond with one another:

Host a Wine Tasting Party

Well, sure, you’ve got alcohol involved. But you aren’t in a bar. So, this technically makes the list by way of omission. It’s still a great way to spend time with your lady friends and wines will always be classier than bar drinks. Buy a slew of different bottles and ages and you’re bound to get a taste for the finer things.

Go Old School With a Classic Sleepover

Remember when you were teenage girls and you’d spend sleepless, yet, fun nights at each other’s house? Well, relive the nostalgia of a time when life was much simpler and when the boys were… well, boys. You’ve got privacy, good company, good food, and lots of pillows. Who doesn’t want a PJ party after all?

Concoct a Group Recipe

Hunker down in your kitchen and concoct whatever baked, cooked, or what-other-cooking-process-have-you, treats. You’d have to be horrendously unskilled at cooking to mess this up. And well, even if you were, your friends would be there to guide you. Nothing strengthens a sisterly bond like a little treat-hatchery does.

Watch an All-Male Revue

But, if you really want to go out and have some fun, well, an all-male performance ought to get you a good time. That, of course, was a euphemism. Men with Greek God bodies, chiseled chins, and the enthusiasm that lives in every performer’s heart. What more could you ask for? One good example of such a show would be the Hunks the Show Male Revue which is one of the most well-received shows on tour. Because well. Hunks forevs. <3

Fake Bachelorette Party

Now, if you really must insist on going to the bar and getting drunk, well, do it differently. Go to your local variety shop, get some penis toys, a fake veil, and a bottle of wine and hit the bar like it’s your last night as a single lady. The fun part? You’d take turns being the lady of the night.

Alopecia: What it is and Ways to Deal with it

It can be difficult to cope with alopecia when you are first diagnosed, especially because it can make drastic changes to your overall appearance. Despite millions of people suffering from the condition, it is still relatively unknown in terms of research and support. It can leave you feeling alone, but you aren’t, and we have a little bit of advice on how to deal with it – as well as further explanation as to what alopecia is and the way it can affect those who have it.

What is Alopecia?

Technically, it is classed as an autoimmune condition, and is also known as a chronic inflammatory disease. What this means is that your immune system is tricked into thinking that your hair follicles are actually a foreign body and so it attacks them – causing your hair to fall out. Additionally, it can impact men and women alike, as well as all age ranges.

There are three main forms of alopecia, each of which varies in terms of severity. Below, you will find each of them listed from least severe to most:

  • Alopecia Areata. Partial hair loss and general patchiness on the head.
  • Alopecia Totalis. Total hair loss on the head.
  • Alopecia Universalis. Total hair loss across the entire body (including lashes and brows).

It is a painless condition, but there are some sufferers who have experienced skin irritation and soreness as a result of the balding areas. It tends to be caused by a combination of genetics and the environment, with conditions like depression or severe stress often acting as the trigger for the condition.

Alopecia and Mental Health

It is possible for alopecia to cause mental health issues as well as be triggered by it. Depression is the most common occurrence for those who suffer from the condition, and it can become quite serious if left untreated. Here are some of the symptoms to look out for if you think that your or a loved one is depressed:

  • Feeling down, upset, or tearful
  • Feeling restless, agitated, or irritable
  • Feeling guilty and worthless
  • Feeling empty and numb
  • Feeling isolated and unable to relate to other people
  • No longer finding pleasure in life or things you usually enjoy
  • Gaining a sense of unreality
  • Losing self-confidence or self-esteem
  • Feeling hopeless and full of despair
  • Feeling suicidal
  • Avoiding social events and activities you usually enjoy
  • Self-harming or suicidal behaviour
  • Finding it difficult to speak or think clearly
  • Losing interest in sex and general intimacy
  • Difficulty in remembering or an inability to concentrate on things
  • Using more tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs than usual
  • Difficulty sleeping, or sleeping too much
  • Feeling tired and drained (emotionally and physically) all the time
  • No appetite and losing weight, or eating too much and gaining weight
  • Physical aches and pains with no obvious cause
  • Moving very slowly, or being restless and agitated

Coping with the Reactions of Others

Other people are not always going to react kindly, and you may find that there are quite a few who are joking with you in a way that leaves your feelings and confidence shattered. A lot of the time it is because people don’t know how to react to conditions they do not understand, or they don’t want you to think that they pity you. Regardless, it is not something you should have to tolerate.

The best way to deal with the reactions of others is to embrace yourself and brush it off, but this is a lot easier said than done. It can be really hard to deal with the stares and comments, but over time many with alopecia state that it does get better. Therapy can be a massive help, especially as it gives you a chance to pour out your emotions and learn healthier coping mechanisms.

Sometimes, those with alopecia have found that running fundraisers and educational events have really helped with reactions because it ensures people understand the condition, that it’s not cancer, and it also isn’t contagious (something many fear with an illness they don’t understand). It’s up to you, but we are sure you will find the perfect way for coping.

To Conclude

Whether you are suffering, or someone you know has been recently diagnosed, we hope that this guide has been able to answer some of the questions you have been asking. If you want to learn more about alopecia and the ways in which you can try to overcome the emotional pain that often comes with it, we have a detailed guide on the topic that we know will be able to ease some of your distress.

Skin Savers for Winter Skin

Moisturizers

Skin tends to need more hydration in the winter months. The air is cooler and dryer, additionally indoor heating is extremely drying to the skin. In the summer months, the air is more humid, and people tend to sweat more, so thicker moisturizers can feel much heavier on the skin, not to mention being sweated off. It’s a good idea to keep a humidifier going in the bedroom at night to keep skin hydrated. It is also good for sinuses to keep them clear.

Different skin types will need different kinds of moisturizers. Younger skin tends to be oiler, as well as ethnic skin types. More mature skin tends to be dryer and thinner, requiring a heavier moisturizer to hydrate and protect the dermal barrier. Men tend to prefer moisturizers that aren’t heavy, and that absorbs quickly into the skin. The same goes for teens. In such instances, they may prefer an oil-free moisturizer or a much lighter serum-based moisturizer. More mature and dryer skin types will usually prefer a cream.

The new buzz ingredient in moisturizers is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in the body. It attracts water molecules and thus helps keep skin hydrated. It is oil-free and is used in both oil-free and cream-based moisturizers. Many moisturizers also include vitamins C and E, which are natural antioxidants and help protect the skin. Many cream-based moisturizers contain ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, and other natural plant oils. In all instances, one needs to be cognizant of fragrance in skincare products. Even natural ones, such as essential oils, can be irritating to the skin. If one is having a reaction to a product, that is the first thing to look for as fragrance is the number one irritant to the skin.

Daily Routine Year-Round

  • The ground rule of basic skin care is to exfoliate your skin. Your body sheds skin cells at an amazing rate every minute of every day. If you don’t get rid of the dead skin cells, they’ll just set in on your skin making your skin look dull and dry. No matter how much lotion you use, you’re never going to have glowing skin if you don’t exfoliate. Grab a body scrub and hit the shower. You can make a great one with the ingredients in your kitchen sink. Use 1-part organic coconut oil to 1-part turbinado sugar or Himalayan salt. Gently rub your exfoliator in circular movements on your entire body from the shoulders down and rinse clean. Continue to do this 2-3 times a week for year-round beautiful skin. You’ll want a gentler facial exfoliator for your face and neck and 1-2 times per week is sufficient. Many cleansers already have exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid. It’s important not to exfoliate too much. You don’t want to strip your skin of its natural oils and protective barrier.

  • To avoid wrinkles, use a light eye cream in the morning and a rich cream at night; tap the eye area lightly with your finger until the product is absorbed to stimulate circulation. Use a gentle, hydrating makeup remover or cleanser. Don’t scrub harder to remove stubborn makeup; instead, gently wash the area again. Eliminate talc-based eye shadows, which sap moisture.

  • Proper vitamin intake is essential (see more insight in the link below)

  • Find a lotion that you won’t forget to put on. You don’t have time to wait for your lotion to sink in, so look for something light fast absorbing. Gels and purees are perfect fast absorbers.  Make sure you apply right after you dry off from your shower. You need to seal in the moisture your body just soaked in.

  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. If possible, carry a water bottle with you and remember to drink at least once every 30 minutes. Water not only helps you feel fresh, but it also prevents dehydration and will help wash out a lot of toxins.

Global Gifting This Holiday Season With Marketplace Africa

GLOBAL GIFTING THAT GIVES BACK – EMPOWERING AFRICA’S FEMALE ARTISANS

Mall of Africa

Did you know the artisan sector is the second largest employer in the developing world?  It’s true, and the majority of artisans are women who create handcrafted goods using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Marketplace Africa, the ecommerce site created by Mall for Africa and powered by DHL, aims to put a global spotlight on these unique African-made products and their creators.  85% of the site’s goods are crafted by underrepresented female artisans from Nigeria, and soon Kenya and Rwanda, who can sell their handmade fashion, jewelry, home goods, and beauty products directly to the U.S. and consumers worldwide.

With Nigeria’s unemployment rate hovering at 14.2% and a staggering 89.5% of the country living in extreme poverty, it’s the female artisans who are making a positive impact on their country’s economy and future.

So this holiday season, why not gift different and buy global?  Choose a Blingshiki, a modern twist on the classic Dashiki, adorned with sparkling embellishments, or grab a pair of colorful Zig sandals.

When you purchase authentic African clothing and handicrafts directly from Marketplace Africa, you’re not just buying something beautiful, you’re investing in artisans who weave their rich cultural traditions into soulful creations. Empowering female artisans and boosting their communities is the real beauty of shopping at Marketplace Africa. And that’s a holiday gift that’s priceless.
