PLASTIC SURGEON UNVEILS BEAUTY HACKS THAT COST LESS THAN A STARBUCKS COFFEE

Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Manish Shah, Denver board -certified, shares these secrets with us.

Dr. Manish Shah beauty hacks

We all know that cosmetic-plastic surgeons and dermatologists earn their living by operating or non- invasive procedures. Most of these endeavors are costly for patients.  It’s rare that any aesthetic surgeon will let us in on things we can do daily that don’t require us to visit them!  We are fortunate to have Dr. Manish Shah, a  share secrets with us, that in many cases cost nothing or less than a gourmet cup of coffee.

 MANISH SHAH’S TOP BEAUTY HACKS

  1. Cleaning your phone screens – Dr. Shah offers that, “A great way to avoid blemishes is to routinely clean the makeup and bacteria off of your phone screens. It is easy to spread harmful skin bacteria from the surface of your phone. Washing your hands goes a long way to avoid skin contamination as well.”

  1. Make your own exfoliating scrub at home– Dr. Shah shares that, “A woman I consider my second mother taught me how to create my own organic exfoliating scrub. She would dry peeled skins of oranges, lemons, and limes in the sun. She would then finely grate the white inside rind of the peel and then mix it with any facial cleanser or even add it to fine facial oils. Using the scrub would exfoliate the skin, treat it with Vitamin C, and prevent over-drying of the skin because of the fruit oils.”

  1. I recommend treating the enlarged pores of the T-zone with over the counter hydrogen peroxide. The bacteria in the pores create  inflammation that increases pore size, and this leads to blackheads and whiteheads. Dr. Shah explains that, “These bacteria can’t survive in high oxygen environments. 3% hydrogen peroxide is available over the counter quite inexpensively. Treating only the T-zone at night kills the bacteria, reduces pore size and  blemishes. Because it can be quite drying, takes breaks from its use every now and then.”

  1. Avoid fake nails. They harbor tons of bacteria that are easily transferred to the face when you touch your face. Instead, focus on growing your own nails with the help of oral vitamin C and any good quality hair, skin, and nails vitamin like Nature’s Bounty Extra Strength Hair, Skin, and Nails.

  1. For teens, especially, it is so important to wash their pillow cases routinely. Dr. Shah is the father ofthree teens. From his first-hand knowledge he says that, “Teens aren’t very compliant when it comes to skincare and they suffer from hormones in a bad way. This 1-2 punch makes acne and blemishes the bane of most teens’ existences. Going to sleep at night on clean pillow cases after washing your face goes a long way to reducing bacterial burden and allows blemishes to heal.”

  1. If you suffer from puffiness around the eyes, a quick trick is to use black tea bags.Wet them in ice water and lay them onto the eyes to soothe. The caffeine in the black tea causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing edema or swelling in the delicate, thin eyelid tissues.

  1. Add baking soda to your toothpaste to easily polish away stains to keep your teeth white.Instead of bleaching your teeth, baking soda actually breaks the molecules that stain the teeth. It is less irritating to your gums as well, and way cheaper than teeth whitening strips.

  1. Eat the rainbow– A white bread-based diet does not for clear skin make. That’s why Dr. Shah makes sure his diet is packed with brightly-colored fruits and vegetables.  He says, “Fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants which give glow to the skin.” Specifically, research suggests that pigments called carotenoids—found in foods like carrots, spinach and other leafy greens, and tomatoes have been linked to good complexions.” Adding fish oil to your diet also improves skin compliance and radiance.

  1. Avoid Hot Showers- Disappointing as it may beDr. Shah says, “Hot showers remove too much of your natural oils and brings blood circulation to your skin, creating inflammatory reactions that result in rashes and aggravate those with eczema or dry patches.”

  1. You may just need a brow wax instead of a lift

“I had a patient who wanted a brow lift because she thought she looked angry all the time. I sent her for a brow wax instead. It took 15 minutes, she looked great, and she saved herself thousands.” Other brow techniques like brow tinting can change how your eyebrows frame the eyes, improving on your looks.

The Pebbles Collection is all about interpreting emotions and feelings through the idea of simple symbolism. With these pieces, you can share whatever yours are without saying a word.

Each necklace features a beautiful organically shaped charm in sterling silver or bronze accent. All necklaces start at $49.

The collection includes Have Faith (accented with a freshwater pearl), Sunrise Always (accented with a small bezel set cubic zirconia), Beauty Within (accented with a freshwater peacock pearl stone), I Love You (accented with a small heart charm), Open Heart (accented with a genuine ruby stone), Stand Tall (accented with a genuine emerald stone) and Make A Wish (accented with a rose gold tone pave star charm).

Meanings behind each necklace:

Have Faith – There isn’t enough room in your mind for both worry and faith. You must decide which one will live there. So accept what is, let go of what was and have faith in what will be.

Sunrise Always – The darkest night will end and without doubt the sun will rise.  Remember that each sunrise is a chance for a new beginning.

Open Heart – Everything changes when we decide to live eyes and heart wide open.

Stand Tall – Stand tall and be rooted in who you are. You have the strength to withstand life’s storms and while the wind may shake your leaves it won’t break who you are.

Staying Glamorous In The Sheets!

With the holiday season here, the need for some new bedroom comfort items for yourself, family and incoming holiday guests may be on the top of your list. And maybe that is why Sheets & Giggles is the company that takes the top notch and has set records recently as the highest bed sheet companies to be crowd funded! And while their branding is all about “making the bedroom fun again”, their sheets don’t lie! The company uses 96% less water than cotton sheets, which also translates to people using 30% less energy to wash their sheets, and their products are also premium 100% eucalyptus lyocell bedding that’s softer, more breathable, and more sustainable than cotton. But besides the fun and science, Sheets & Giggles has started to catch the eye of Hollywood celebrities such as Andy Dick and Perez Hilton.

It’s A Glam Thing caught up in the bedroom with the brand’s Denver-based CEO Colin McIntosh to dive deeper into the sack of what makes his sheets just that good, how they actually help with skin care, and some personal details about being the founder of awesome “sheet”…

NICK NORTHSTAR: How would you describe your own personal fashion style – both while at home and while working?

COLIN MCINTOSH: Bachelor life / on brand, which means I basically stay in my pajamas all day and work from bed when I don’t go into the office. When I do go into the office, it’s just standard Denver startup garb: flannel shirts and jeans every day.

NN: The word “Glamorous” can mean many different things… what is its definition to you?

CM: To me, glamorous people are successful people. If someone works hard, builds something amazing, and has the freedom (both professionally and financially) to dress how they want, that person is glamorous to me. I admire people who have both the confidence and freedom to express themselves how they want.

NN: Your company & products are all about environmental sustainability… why is this so important?

CM: Well, aside from the fact that we’re pretty much headed off a climate change cliff and everyone should probably stop buying cotton products, I wanted to spend my waking hours doing something that made at least somewhat of a positive impact in the world. When you start a business from scratch, it’s nice to be able to make decisions about how your company will tackle certain challenges from an environmental and ethical perspective. For example, our sheets use up to 95% less water than cotton, and no insecticides (cotton uses about 16-24% of the world’s insecticides by itself), and for every order we also plant a tree somewhere in the world that needs reforestation. We also have a donation program (#Give2Sheets) whereby our customers can donate their old cotton sheets to charity (sheets are the second-most-requested item at homeless shelters). I wouldn’t have started a business that didn’t make me feel good about myself and the end results of my work.

NN: What makes your bed sheets “bedder bedding” than other companies?

CM: From a comfort level, S&G’s eucalyptus lyocell sheets are literally softer, more breathable, and more moisture-wicking than cotton (i.e., they’re ideal for hot sleepers). They’re also more durable to rips and tears and will hold their color longer than cotton sheets. From a sustainability angle, we use up to 95% less water than cotton, up to 30% less energy, and no pesticides or insecticides, and they biodegrade 40% faster once thrown in a landfill.

NN: What is your advice to anyone wanting to pursue their dreams and create their own products?

CM: Before anything else, build a profitable business model and go-to-market strategy that you strongly feel makes sense and is profitable. Then, go find customers and market to them, get signups, get feedback on the proposed product, and then build your product around that model, strategy, and early customer feedback. Do not do it the other way around, which is how most companies get founded: people spend time and money building a “thing” and then try to build a business around it, only to find out the “thing” doesn’t have market demand, sustainable margins, a large enough audience, etc.

NN: How important was crowd funding to get things started for Sheets & Giggles?

CM: Absolutely crucial. We purposefully didn’t raise money from a VC like a traditional startup, so in May 2018 we used Indiegogo to crowdfund preorders and generate our initial bankroll. If we had failed, we would’ve basically wrapped up the company or hit the reset button. Because of this, we have a really tight bond with our ~2,000 Indiegogo backers; they literally brought the company to life.

NN: What is the biggest lesson you have learned so far from running your own company?

CM: Nothing is ever perfect, and you have to be ok with mistakes if you’re going to actually get things done.

NN: How important are sheets (material used, etc.) in relation to skin care overnight?

CM: Very, especially because people only wash their sheets on average every 3 weeks. Airy sheets that are moisture-wicking and that evaporate sweat quickly are important for an anti-microbial environment, but synthetics like polyester can cause outbreaks and other skin problems. Treat yourself to nice sheets and wash them once a week! (Or at least once every two weeks.)

NN: What other products are you currently working on?

CM: Eucalyptus throw blankets will be next in line in early 2019, followed by a eucalyptus heavy blanket and hopefully some eucalyptus towels soon after that. All sustainable, all insanely premium and soft.

NN: Do you feel Sheets & Giggles consumers will feel more “Glamorous” after a good night’s rest in your products?!

CM: Our reviews tell that story well! We’ve had customers who tell us they haven’t slept this well in years (from back pain, night sweats, menopause, etc.), and we absolutely love every time we get a new story from a customer who slept like a baby the night before.

NN: Before we let you go, tell us a bedroom “giggle” joke…

CM: We almost hired a koala bear as an actor in our recent video shoot about eucalyptus trees, but he wasn’t koalafied for the position.

WINTER HEALTH MYTHS BUSTED!

https://tourocom.touro.edu/academics/faculty/harlem/niket-sonpal.php

There are endless winter health myths that we have heard from well intentioned grandparents and parents. They have become so ingrained in us that we take them as cold hard facts. Many of these myths have no more basis in reality than Santa Claus.  Of course, everyone wants to stay as healthy as possible during the frosty months. In order to do so sensibly, we turned to Board Certified NYC internist and gastroenterologist Dr. Niket Sonpal.

Myth: Allergies go away in the winter

Allergies might be the real source behind your stuffy nose and scratchy throat this season. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, one in five people suffer from indoor/outdoor allergies, and the indoor variety can actually be worse in the winter. Dr. Sonpal cautions that, “If your symptoms last longer than 10 days or ease up after taking an antihistamine, it might be time to visit an allergist.”

Myth: I wash my hands all the time with hand sanitizer, so I should be fine.

Hand sanitizer will kill most viruses, but not all. You must make sure you use the right amount of hand sanitizer and let it dry completely. Dr. Sonpal points out that,” Some viruses, like norovirus, which causes vomiting, is not killed by hand sanitizer. Soap and water are best to get rid of all bacteria and viruses, but the hand sanitizer is better than nothing at all.”

Myth: It’s cold out, I don’t need sunscreen.

The sun’s rays are just as strong in the winter months as they are in the other seasons. Snow and ice can reflect even more sunlight, up to twice as much. Grab the SPF 30 and put it on, regardless of the temperature. Don’t forget those sunglasses to keep your eyes safe as well.

I’ll just drink some alcohol to keep myself warm.

Although it may feel like drinking alcohol is making you warmer, it does not. Dr. Sonpal says that, “when you drink, the blood vessels dilate or get bigger, and blood flows to your skin and away from your internal organs. So, it may feel like you are getting warmer, but you are not.”

Myth: The Flu Shot Gives You the Flu

According to a new survey from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and Rite Aide, 44 percent of American women view the flu as a serious threat to their health. Yet nearly half (49 percent) do not intend to get a flu shot this year because they believe the vaccine can give them the flu. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the flu shot for anyone older than 6 months of age. Dr. Sonpal stresses that, “The shot does not contain a live virus, making catching the flu from it impossible.”

Winter weather makes you store fat and gain weight

Our bodies do not go into some kind of winter hibernation mode, stockpiling every ounce of fat to use for the lean times. It seems logical, like a throwback to our days living in caves foraging for food, but in reality, any weight gain comes from our winter habits. Dr. Sonpal points out that, “we tend to exercise less in winter. We eat more hearty meals and comfort foods, including more sugary snacks and desserts (especially around the holidays).”

Myth: You Lose Most Heat Through Your Head

The saying goes “we lose 90 percent of our body heat through our heads.”  But a 2006 study found that the head accounts for about 7 percent of the body’s surface area, and that heat loss in the region is fairly proportional, according to LiveScience. “Your head is another extremity, and it’s susceptible to cold, so you should wear a hat, but it doesn’t lose any more heat than another part of your body,” says Dr. Sonpal.

Myth: Chicken Soup Will Cure Colds

Many cultures teach us to drink warm liquids like tea, hot apple cider, and soups when we’re dealing with colds. It’s true that something like chicken soup may help soothe and ease congestion, but much like vitamin C, hot soup won’t do immediate wonders.

Myth: Being Cold Gives You a Cold

No matter what your grandma might have told you, spending too much time in the cold air doesn’t make you sick. One study found that healthy men who spent several hours in temperatures just above freezing had an increase in healthy, virus-fighting activity in their immune systems. In fact, you’re more likely to get sick indoors, where germs are easily passed.

Myth: Feed a cold, starve a fever

Dr. Sonpal says that, “This is another myth that comes from a time when people didn’t understand the science of body chemistry. The thought was that if you had a cold, food would warm you up. Conversely, if you had a high fever, not eating would cool you down. This is just patently bad medical advice. In both cases, good nutrition gives your body the fuel it needs to fight infections and recover from an illness. When you have a fever, your body is burning energy at a rapid rate, and that needs to be replenished. So, by all means feed your cold; but also feed your fever, or any other illness. Even if you have stomach issues, find a way to take in lost fluids and electrolytes.”

Top Keto Diet Myths That We Should Stop Believing

We all have different reasons for wanting to adopt a healthy lifestyle, yet the benefits are all the same across the board. A strong and aesthetically-pleasing body, a sharp mind, and an even better psyche.

One popular dietary method through which one can achieve a healthy lifestyle is a ketogenic diet.

What Exactly is a Ketogenic Diet?

The Ketogenic diet places an emphasis on keeping carbohydrate intake minimal while maintaining sufficient fat intake. The reduction in carbohydrates is going to trigger a metabolic state called “ketosis” wherein the body burns fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. These are just the core concepts. Here’s a more comprehensive guide on what a keto diet is.

It is currently one of the more popular diet types to adopt. And naturally, with as something gains more attention, misinformation is bound to spread. Misinformation spreads even quicker on the internet. This can potentially be harmful to the uninformed (misinformed, rather) reader. So, what myths are we here to dispel?

Myth: Ketogenic Diets Aren’t a Sustainable Health Option

Ketogenic diets are more than a diet change, it’s part of an entire lifestyle. If you make this drastic change, and your body takes to it and healthily adapts, it’s important that you don’t respond by switching back and forth between thsi diet and another one rapidly.

Commit to a ketogenic diet over the long-term to allow yourself properly adjust yourself away from sugar. Once you’ve finished adapting, you need to make the same kind of careful choices when you want to switch back.

Don’t stress your organs by eating carbs like you used to. Instread, gradually re-introduce them. Better yet, stick with one diet for the long term if it isn’t giving you trouble.

Myth: All Fats are Fine to Eat

The idea that one should increase fat intake and lower carb intake gives the wrong impression that you can eat any type of fatty food that you get your hands on. This is not the case.

Saturated fats such as the ones found in red meats increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. An optimal keto diet would be to take in unsaturated fats instead (fish, flax seed, almonds, walnuts).

Myth: Ketosis vs. Ketoacidosis

As previously surmised, the goal of a keto diet is to trigger an optimal state of “fat burning” metabolism. This process is called “ketosis”. On the other hand, ketoacidosis is a condition that happens when there is an excess in ketones. It is potentially-life threatening and should be avoided.

Myth: Protein Should Be Abundant in a Keto Diet

We need to strike a balance in terms of protein intake. The general view on proteins is that they are a must if you want to stay healthy. This is not the case with a keto diet because an increase in proteins will eventually spark an increase in ketones, which is known to trigger ketoacidosis. Thi

New from Nubian Heritage … Honey and Black seed collection

There is everything to love about Nubian Heritage. I’m a huge fan of Nubian Heritage, especially their newest Collection, Honey and Black Seed, it’s  exceptional. The collection consists of 6 products that the entire family can use; Bar Soap, Body Lotion, Body Wash, Hand Cream, 24 hour Deodorant and infused Shea Butter.  My husband has already gone through the Bar Soap and is waiting for me to order another one. The Black Seed adds a nice texture to the soap offering a very light exfoliation leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. The scent is enjoyable and my whole family likes it which isn’t often the case.

Here is a little information on Black Seed.  Black Seed, also known as the “seed of blessing,” is such a part of our culture that it was found in the Tomb of King Tutankhamen. So powerful are its medicinal properties that ancient proverbs proclaim Black Seed on the skin to strengthen the immune system, prevent external infections, increase blood circulation and achieve a smooth, even complexion.

*Black Seed Oil was reportedly used by Queen Nefertiti to maintain her exquisite complexion.

*Arabian Honey, a humectant packed with antioxidants, helps skin maintain a youthful glow.

*Shea Butter is certified organic and fair trade, sourced from 15 women’s co-ops in Northern Ghana. Shea butter provides fatty acids and vitimins that nourish the skin.

*Apricot Oil helps kill skin cells that produce the protein, keratin. This allows new skin cells to form.

I feel the same way about Nubian Heritage Body Wash Honey & Black Seed. The body wash  contains Black Seed Oil and Arabian Honey and is rich in antioxidants. This is surely a luxurious, moisturizing body cleanser. It’s natural enzymes, amino acids and proteins boost moisture retention while soothing and perfecting skin’s appearance, Leaving you  skin feeling smooth. What I love most about the body wash is its amazing scent. Not only does your skin feel soft, the scent stays on your body quite a long time.

If you have dry skin, especially your hands and feet, I would strongly recommend Nubian Heritage’s 100% Organic Shea Butter. Also infused with Arabian Honey and Black Seeds, the shea butter immediately softens and smooths your skin. It’s a little on the thick side but it’s worth the extra time applying the shea butter and it won’t disappoint.

Nubian Heritage Honey and Black Seed Collection is suitable for all skin types including Combination skin and oily skin. All Nubian Heritage products are cruelty-free and does not contain parabens, sulfates, phthalates, paraffin, mineral oil, petroleum, DEAA, synthetic fragrance or artificial coloring.
Nubian Heritage is available at Nubian Heritage.com and the Vitamin Shoppe.
