Five Reasons You Should Cook at Home

It’s no secret that going out for lunch and supper is way more accessible then whipping up a meal at home. You don’t have to do anything really besides eat and pay when going out. At home, you have to prepare, cook and clean just for a few minutes of eating.

But regularly going out for food is having serious effects on our wellbeing. From rising obesity, declining health and enormous debt, is it worth eating out all the time? Instead, bring back home cooked meals that can be done with the family.

Here are just a few reasons why you should ditch the takeout and be a master chef at home.

You Control Your Meal

Restaurants care about portion sizes, just not in the way that you should be. You want to get the best bang for your buck, so the plate you’re ordering is more than likely way too big.

Cooking at home means you control how much you put on your plate and into your stomach. Portion sizes are a significant factor when on a diet or just trying to eat healthily.

You Know What is in Your Food

When eating out, you’re not going to know every single ingredient that is in a dish. They don’t want to give away the recipe. So for all you know, your takeout is filled with way too much sodium or oils.

When you cook at home, you know what you’re precisely putting into your meal. This allows you to control the health level of a dish and to substitute out items if they don’t cut it.

You’ll Save Money

Eating out is expensive. Even if you order the cheapest item every time, you’re still spending more money than cooking at home.

Restaurants want to make money, not throw it away. Prices will be a lot higher on a menu then it would be if you bought everything at the grocery store and made it yourself – and that’s not even including the tip at the end.

It’s a Great Learning Place and Relationship Builder

Whether you are cooking with your spouse or teaching your children, cooking with someone is a great way to build relationships and have a lot of fun.

Make it an event, especially for the kids. Dress the part when stepping into the kitchen with chef aprons and accessories. Show that the kitchen is not a scary place (but don’t overlook the potential dangers) and they should be comfortable in it.

Let Your Creativity Shine

A kitchen is a place where you should not only have fun but let your creative juices flow as well. If a recipe calls for something you don’t like, have some fun figuring out a substitution.

When ordering out, many places don’t like customers substituting items as it changes the outcome of the dish. Some restaurants won’t even allow substitutions. So cooking at home, you have more freedom to do what you want.

Now, this doesn’t mean you should never go out for food; it should be a treat. These are only a handful of reasons why cooking at home is a better option. Once you get into a habit, eating out will be the last option you do choose.

How to tell a skincare Hero from a zero

When it comes to skincare do you really get what you pay for? From the newest ingredients to the latest in-office procedures we connected with Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Margarita Lolis based in Northern New Jersey with her insights on how to tell a skincare zero from a hero.

Here’s what is certain; there are no firming or tightening products whose results can duplicate what you derive from in office procedures such as dermal fillers, Botox, lasers, or cosmetic surgery. Dr. Lolis explains that while there are anti- aging products or ingredients that do perform significantly better than others and can make a profound difference in the skin’s appearance while others are simply “false hope in a jar.”

Why don’t most products work the way they claim? Almost without exception, when you buy a product claiming to tighten skin, its effects, if any, are due to ingredients such as film-forming agents. Just like the name states, film-forming agents form a film on the skin, and that can make the skin “feel” tighter. The effect is temporary and you won’t see noticeable lifting of sagging skin, but the sensation is often enough to convince women that the product is working. Dr. Lolis stresses that, “Skin just feeling tighter is not the same as making a real change for the better in the tone or laxity of your skin. Using what really works will get you closer to the results you want.”

THE HEROES

  1. Sunscreen

Dr. Lolis says, “Sunscreen of an SPF 30 or above is the best antiaging cream you can use. It prevents skin cancer as well as UVA rays that cause loss of collagen and wrinkles in the skin especially when reapplied every 2 hours. My favorite base sunscreens have titanium or zinc oxide in them as active ingredients.”

  1. Retinoids & Glycolic Acid

“Retinoids are the go-to option to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and help boost collagen production,” says Dr. Lolis.”  She adds, “Over the counter retinols are good, Neutrogena makes a good one, or prescriptions such as Retin- A.” Glycolic acid also reduces fine lines and wrinkles and helps fade pigmentary damage from the sun. “I often have patients alternate nights with retinoid and glycolic,” says Dr. Lolis.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant which reduces free radical damage and is great for anti-aging and helps brighten the skin. Dr. Lolis often recommends it in the morning, underneath sunblock, or at night if patients are too sensitive to tolerate retinoids and glycolic acid.

  1. Ceramides

Ceramides are a type of lipid found in the membrane of cells. Dr. Lolis states that, “They help hold skin cells together, forming a protective layer that plumps the skin and retains moisture. Ceramide levels decrease as we age which leads to loss of hydration, less skin turnover and dryer, more damaged skin. Replenishing the skin’s ceramide levels will help restore moisture and fortify the skin’s natural barrier, helping skin look and feel younger.” Lolis recommends using a moisturizer containing ceramide moisturizer for your whole body daily.

  1. Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone works to even out sun spots, blotches, and mottled skin. A little hydroquinone goes a long way. “It’s the most effective ingredient for bleaching skin,” says Dr. Lolis. Hydroquinone fades hyperpigmentation by blocking the enzyme that triggers melanin production in the skin.

  1. Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract is loaded with nutrients called polyphenols, which have been shown to fight free radicals. Studies have found that ingredients in green tea can reduce sun damage and may protect against skin cancer when applied topically. Dr. Lolis offers that, “Using green tea extract under sunscreen can provide an extra dose of protection. Polyphenols in creams and lotions may help slow signs of aging, reduce sagging skin and decrease wrinkles.”

THE ZEROES

The majority of anti-aging creams are still based on moisturizers such as mineral oil. Wrinkles look worse when they are dry, so any kind of moisturizer helps, but its only temporary and doesn’t address the root cause of the wrinkles such as collagen loss, free radical damage, sun damage and environmental factors. Don’t be fooled by the antiaging labels. Unless there is an actual “active ingredient” such as retinol, the benefit is just moisture but nothing else.

  1. B Vitamins

Many forms of vitamin B (like B12) can only be absorbed in the small intestine, so no matter how much is loaded into your moisturizer or serum, it’s not going to make a difference. “Vitamins like niacin can have an effect on the skin’s texture and color, but your skin can’t absorb them,” Dr. Lolis explains. If you really want to tap into the power of vitamin B to improve your skin’s glow and appearance, stick to eating leafy greens like spinach, asparagus, beans, and peas.

  1. Caffeine

Much like a Starbucks latte for your brain, caffeine in skin creams can give a boost to your skin, too; until it wears off.  “Caffeine can temporarily reduce puffiness, especially around your eyes,” explains Dr. Lolis.  “But don’t expect permanent results.”

  1. Botanical Extracts

These are ingredients extracted from plants (flowers, roots, stems, trees, etc.) used in skin care for everything from healing blemishes to reducing fine wrinkles. They have been used for centuries and have anecdotal purposes in many cultures. Botanical extracts need to remain on your skin in order to work. Dr. Lolis explains that, “In cleansers, there is simply not enough contact time on your skin for any true anti-aging benefit to take place. Another issue is that most botanical extracts are water soluble, which means that the moment you wet your skin and begin to wash your face, they’re watered down losing efficacy.

  1. Collagen and Elastin

“Collagen and elastin in skin-care products can serve as good water-binding agents, but they cannot fuse with your skin’s natural supply of these supportive elements,” explains Dr. Lolis. “In most cases, the collagen molecule is too large to penetrate into the skin,” she adds.

It’s very important to do your research because there’s a lot of packaging and a lot of hype. The best thing to do is visit your dermatologist and aesthetician who can develop a skin care regimen that works to address your skin concerns based on skin type.

National Hat Day is January 15!

Mary Dixon Kies

Mary Dixon Kies

On Jan. 15 celebrate National Hat Day by honoring National Inventors Hall of Fame Member Mary Dixon Kies, an inspiring innovator in the fashion industry!

Mary Dixon Kies was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame posthumously in 2006 for her process for weaving straw with silk. She was the first woman to apply and receive a U.S. patent with her own name, and only one of 20 issued to a woman before the year 1840. Kies’ process, adopted by the hat-making industry, was praised by President James Madison’s wife Dolly for helping to improve New England’s economic growth. This process was well used for more than a decade and influenced the way we construct a very popular fashion accessory — hats.

7 Tips for saving when sneaker shopping

Girl in sneakers using blitzresults.com

You just bought an awesome pair of sneakers, thinking you got a good price, then realized your friend got an even better deal. You won’t be over-spending again with these 7 secret tips for buying sneakers.

Tip 1: Timing is everything
Many retailers automatically increase prices during popular shopping times and times of higher demand. Prices tend to be higher especially around noon and in the evening. Prices will almost always go up on the weekend and, of course, before festive seasons such as Christmas. It’s worth it to keep an eye on pricing so you buy when the time is right!

Tip 2: Remain unseen!
Many retailers use cookies and track IP addresses to follow your behavior. Some even increase the price on products that you look at more often. They do this to pressure customers into buying before there’s another price increase. In this case, you should set your browser to private mode while shopping.

Tip 3: Subscribe to newsletters
Merchants often entice new subscribers with generous discounts. Just subscribe to the newsletter and you’ll receive a discount voucher. You can always unsubscribe, so you can save money easily with just a few clicks! Savvy savers even use multiple email addresses to cash in on more discounts.

Tip 4: Student discounts
Often students get great discounts when they buy online. Just register with your university’s e-mail address and get discounts of up to 30% when you shop.

Tip 5: Be sure to buy the right shoe size
The most expensive sneakers are the ones you bought and aren’t wearing! Studies suggest that up to 17% of all shoes purchased are only worn a few times because they simply do not fit. This is especially true if you buy shoes online; you can’t try them on. Sizes vary a lot from brand to brand, so be sure you convert the length of your foot into the correct size.

Tip 6: Voucher codes
Voucher codes are a perfect way to save a few bucks. Just search online for the respective online store or brand’s voucher codes, then enter the code during checkout.

Tip 7: Kid’s sizes
Sharp bargain hunters who have a small shoe size check out the children’s section when they buy sneakers. You can find really nice sneakers here, often to size 10; they’ve just been “declared” kid sizes. There can be a price difference of up to $50. Not sure whether the kids shoe size would fit you? Convert the length of your foot into the correct size by using free tools like https://www.blitzresults.com/en/sneaker/

Essential Kitchen Gadgets That Add Glamor to Your Life

Toiling away in the kitchen is rarely glamorous. In fact, if you are not careful, you will end up hot, sweaty, and smelling of unpleasant things like garlic and curry. But fear not because there are plenty of useful gadgets out there that will reduce your labor and make life a whole lot easier. In fact, if you invest wisely, you should have more time to spend sipping on a chilled glass of Chardonnay rather than making food.

Here are some essential gadgets every glamorous kitchen angel needs to have in their arsenal. If you don’t own any of these, make sure they end up on your Wish List sooner rather than later!

Instant Pot

The Instant Pot has risen from relative obscurity to a sell-out gadget, all within the space of a few years. For converts, the Instant Pot is a fantastic kitchen gadget that you won’t be able to live without once it takes up residence in your kitchen. So, what is this amazing piece of kit and will it change your life?

The Instant Pot is a pressure cooker, but it does a whole lot more than cook tender stews in 30-mins. You can cook everything from rice, yogurt and stew, to joints and veggies, all in one pot. You can even keep food warm! The Instant Pot reduces cooking time by 70%, so a frozen joint is ready to eat in 30-minutes. Just think, instead of slaving away over a family roast dinner, you can spend most of your time relaxing instead. What’s not to like about that?

Garbage Disposal

Garbage is not glamorous. The stink of a ripe garbage bin full of decomposing vegetable peelings is unpleasant and highly attractive to pests. An electronic garbage disposal removes kitchen waste by chopping it up and flushing it away down your home’s sewage system. Say goodbye to kitchen smells and pests and hello to a fresh and fragrant kitchen.

Look for a good quality garbage disposal unit, such as the Insinkerator Badger 5, as you are less likely to have any problems with it. The best disposal units reduce food waste to liquid, so it flushes away quickly and easily.

Divided Meal Skillet

Do you love the idea of cooking one meal in a single pan? If the Instant Pot is out of stock, you can go for a divided meal skillet instead. It isn’t as multi-functional as an Instant Pot, but you can cook pancakes, bacon, eggs, and anything else that takes your fancy, all in one non-stick skillet.

Artisan Coffee Machine

You can’t put a price on good coffee, so be prepared to invest in a top-quality coffee machine. Gaggia makes some great espresso machines, but if you are on a budget, look at models from Bosch, Nespresso, and De’Longhi. Pod or capsule machines are perfect for those with zero time to mess around, but for a more authentic coffee experience, look at a bean-to-cup machine instead.

3 Reasons Why You Should Find the Perfect Bridal Shop for Your Body Type

There are hundreds of bridal shops that are in existence at the moment and for this reason, finding the perfect shop for your body type might be a bit overwhelming. The curvaceous women to be precise may have the hardest time finding their ideal bridal shop because most of them have the mentality that bridal gowns for plus size brides are impossible to find.

If truth be told, there are specific bridal shops that strictly cater for the plus size bride, making it your one stop bridal shop. If you research more, you will also find that there are other bridal shops that cater for the needs of every bride depending on their body type. However, to save time and make your search for a wedding gown more pleasurable, it is advised that you find a strictly curvaceous bridal wedding shop.

That said, here are 3 reasons why you should only go for a bridal shop that is known to cater for the curvaceous brides:

  • It will make shopping less hectic – There are hundreds of bridal gowns out there. And with so many options available, you can spend the entire day trying on dresses before you find your perfect dress. However, by narrowing your search to curvaceous bridal shops only, you will have fewer options to deal with and you will also have dresses that accentuate your curves. As a matter of fact, you might just find your perfect dress in one or two fittings.

  • You will have a team of professionals who understand your body type right there with you – Most brides are anxious to find their dresses and most of the time, they get a little irrational. Not to worry though; your one stop bridal shop will have a team of professionals who will help you identify a dress that flatters your body, a dress that is within your budget and of course a dress that will go well with your wedding theme.

  • The store owners know what is trendy and what is not – Are you a fashion conscious bride? Do you wish to walk down the aisle and say your vows in a dress that is hitting the fashion headlines? Your curvaceous bridal store will have all the trendy wedding gowns for the season for you to choose from. Now, depending on your taste and preferences, you will then have the opportunity to choose the dress that suits your style and at the same time one that flatters your body.

In conclusion, your wedding day is one of the best days of your life. Most brides are excited to walk down the aisle and say their vows to their life partners. But believe it or not, as much as that is something to look forward to, there is nothing as fulfilling and exciting as finding the perfect dress for your body type, especially if you are a plus size bride. It’s all in the dress; the magic, the pleasure, the comfort, you name it!

Kim Kardashian and Cyndi Lauper Have Openly Discussed Psoriasis

Woman scratching head psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis affects more than half of those who have psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disease that affects roughly 7.5 million Americans and 125 million people worldwide. It can affect all ages and can appear for the first time at any age.  In fact, you may be surprised to know that many celebrities suffer from psoriasis as well. Kim Kardashian and Cyndi Lauper are just two of the many celebrities that have made it known publicly that they have been diagnosed with psoriasis.  It leaves itchy, red, scaling, raised patches on the skin. The true cause of psoriasis is unknown; however, it is believed to be an immune mediated disease where skin cells are in overdrive and rapidly producing more than normal. Genetics also most likely play a major role. Most recent studies are showing a correlation between psoriasis and heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Psoriasis is most commonly located on the elbows, knees and scalp but can occur anywhere on the body. Psoriasis is not contagious.

It is important to recognize that psoriasis can be very traumatic to the individual suffering from it and can have many emotional and psycho social side effects. Often individuals are embarrassed of how their skin looks or are treated differently by people who do not understand what is going on with their skin. There is currently no cure for psoriasis so treatment is based on symptoms.

If you suffer from psoriasis there are some things you can to relieve the symptoms. First of all, take advantage of the Vitamin D produced by the summer sun. (IMPORTANT: You should still use broad-spectrum sunscreen on all areas of unaffected skin). Stay outside for only 10 minutes at a time and gradually step that up. The UV rays from the sun have proven to help psoriasis and slow down skin cell growth. Sun exposure as treatment should be discussed with your physician. Multiple studies have shown that a healthy diet that is low in sugar can dramatically improve psoriasis. This means avoiding not only candy and sweets but foods high in carbs or that may convert to sugars in the body such as pasta and alcohol.

Over the counter moisturizers and cortisone creams may be beneficial. To relieve both itch and inflammation.

See a dermatologist. There are many prescription medications and lasers that are available to help alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis and put the disease in remission. You do not need to suffer any longer and you are not alone. You can visit the National Foundation for Psoriasis online for more information at www.psoriasis.org.
