Get the look: Shailene Woodley

Best Female Performance winner Shailene Woodley rocked the carpet last night at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards with a French inspired, bold yet naturally radiant look, created by Celebrity Makeup Artist Roxy.

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley

To achieve this look, Roxy hydrated Shailene’s face by applying Laurel Whole Plants Organic Skin Facial Elixir to her face, neck and décolletage. Next, to even out her skin tone and achieve a flawless finish, Roxy applied a sheer foundation with a beauty blender sponge. She then softly played up the definition of Shailene’s cheek bones with a warm cream RMS Bronzer. Following this, for extra radiance, Roxy applied RMS illuminizer down the bridge of Shailene’s nose, above and around the corners of her brows, in a C shaped manner.

For her eyes, Roxy applied a chocolate brown liner along the top and bottom lash lines, diffusing it softly with a petite eye brush. To emphasize the eyes a bit more, she layered a soft black liner on her top lid with a subtle smudge. Last but not least, Roxy focused on Shailene’s lips, applying a mixture of Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons in Napa Vineyard and Redwood Forest ($9, www.burtbees.com), for a rich, bold and creamy red that finished the look flawlessly.

A message from the Pros from Carmex about Cold Sores

DOES A COLD SORE MAKE YOU  WANT TO RUN FOR COVER?

The Carmex® “Let’s Get Closer” Survey Reveals How People Really Feel

If you are one of more than half of Americans between the ages of 21-54, who say they have ever had a cold sore, you may also share the attitudes and behaviors of people who know how these unattractive and unwelcome cold sores may make you feel.

Carma Laboratories, the company that has been manufacturing Carmex® lip balm for over 78 years, recently introduced Carmex® Cold Sore Treatment, a product that works on contact to block pain and itch while minimizing the appearance of a cold sore1. Cold sores can be inconvenient, embarrassing and always seem to happen at the most inopportune time. In order to better understand the social challenges cold sores create, Carma Laboratories recently completed a Harris Poll of over 1,100 adults age 21-54.

So, just how do Americans feel about cold sores? According to the Carmex “Let’s Get Closer” survey*, almost half of adults ages 21-54 would be very to somewhat likely to cancel a date if they woke up with a cold sore. This feeling was more prevalent among women and men between the ages of 21-44. A geographic breakdown shows this to be more of a reality among people from the South (56%) or Midwest (49%).

More than 1 in 4 Americans said they would be very to somewhat likely to postpone a job interview. Interestingly, men were more likely to say that they would be somewhat likely to take a day off from work because of a cold sore.

Twenty nine (29%) percent acknowledge that they would wonder if the cold sore was contagious and (26%) percent would wonder if it was herpes. Close to 2 in 5 said they would be very to somewhat likely to cut short a date if their date showed up with a cold sore.

It would seem obvious that no one really wants to kiss someone if they have a cold sore, yet surprisingly, men might still consider it! Sixty seven (67%) of women said they would be very unlikely to do this, while (57%) say they would be unlikely.

If you do have an occasional or frequent cold sore, do you ever wonder what people are thinking when they see you? Gratifyingly, (68%) of those ages 21-34 and (67%) of those ages 35-44 think “That must be painful.” Forty nine percent (49%) of ages 45-54 share this reaction. On the other hand, caution prevails.  Thirty one percent (31%) between 21-44 wonder if it’s contagious versus (22%) of ages 45-54. Herpes is on people’s minds too when they see a cold sore with (29%) of 21-34 year olds and (28%) of 35-44 year olds wondering if the cold sore might be herpes. Interestingly, men (13%) are more likely than women (7%) to think that the person with a cold sore isn’t clean.

Only NEW Carmex® Cold Sore Treatment works on contact to block pain and itch while minimizing the appearance of a cold sore. 10% Benzocaine blocks pain and itch, while the TriPLEX™ Formula technology smoothes and fills to make the cold sore less noticeable. And, it works on contact – so you see and feel results fast. While no product can cure a cold sore, this breakthrough product may help sufferers feel more comfortable and confident while managing through a cold sore outbreak.

How to Maintain Polished Brows in Warm/Humid Weather

April, 2015 (New York, NY) – Bold brows are not a trend, they are here to stay – every celebrity seems to have transformed their pencil thin arches into bolder straighter frames, and it’s benefited every single one of them! Keep in mind that a perfectly polished brow requires more than just getting rid of stray hairs every month, but not much more (wink).  Boom Boom, owner of Boom Boom Brow Bargives tips on how to get eyebrows ready for the warmer seasons, whether hitting spring break, the Rivera or a rooftop with a chair, beautifully groomed brows make a girl feel GORG!

“It starts with a tint, taking a few minutes to darken your eyebrows reduces time in a tight beauty routine. And don’t worry about matching the color so perfectly to your head hair, nowadays anything goes.  Think of it like bags and shoes, they used to have to match, but now it’s actually cooler if they don’t!” says Boom Boom.

A tint is like a glaze, it’s semi permanent so it will gracefully wear away.  First an esthetician applies Vaseline to the skin surrounding the hair to protect it and prevent the dye from bleeding onto skin, and then the vegetable-based tint is applied to the brow hair and processes for about 10 minutes before it’s wiped away.  Tints add definition by coloring the brow hair, as well as all the teeny tiny little hairs that are usually invisible, so the result is a much bolder brow.  Note to self-tanners, skip tanning the week before coming in for a tint – tanners can sometimes react badly with dye.

“A good brow tint gives you a thicker style, a more youthful appearance and is the perfect solution to keeping brows looking great in warm humid climates where makeup melts or water washes it away,” adds Boom Boom.  It’s also great for on-the-go gals who don’t have time to apply much makeup or prefer a more natural look.  The added bonus is even looking good at the gym and when waking up in the morning!!

The loveliness lasts 4-6 four to six weeks; just avoid oil-based moisturizers, cleansers, or wipes, which can cause fadage.  Applying sunscreen to brows protects them even more.

Preparing brows for the warmer more humid weather in advance allows a girl to kick back, toss her flip-flops in reckless abandon and enjoy life….all while looking FAB!!

Malynda Vigliotti (aka Boom Boom) is obsessed with brows – 130,000+ served at Boom Boom Brow Bar in NYC!  Everyone should have thick gorgeous eyebrows, after all, they are the most important feature on the face and THE best accessory EVA!   Boom Boom knows there’s no such thing as natural beauty, but she does believe a perfectly done brow is an instant eyelift – no Botox necessary!  She makes waxing fun and affordable for everyone, just walk-in! For more fabulousness, check out what’s cooking on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/boomboombrowbar and Twitter: http://twitter.com/boomboombrowbar.

5 Questions With Miss Los Angeles Annabella Gutman!

64841a_9877819a9d974aa1a86d22801c67f68e.jpg_srz_p_438_548_75_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz1

Her name is Annabella Gutman and she is the current Miss Los Angeles 2015 that has been making quite a name for herself in Hollywood recently with several big screen projects in the works, including a role on HBO’s Entourage. It’s A Glam Thing got to chat with her about her stunning an fabulous style/looks!

FullSizeRender-3

How would you describe your style?
For daytime, I usually like edgy and trendy cool, but at the same time comfortable. For evening wear, it depends upon which event I go to and what the venue is. For less dressy events, I would wear something with leather, leggings and boots. For red carpet events I would wear gowns by my favorite designers.

What fashion trends do you see happening that you either like or dislike?
Recently more than ever we are seeing a lot of see-through outfits on the runway, which I think is kind of cool. I don’t particularly care for dresses that look like tents, or 10 sizes too big. I don’t find that very flattering.

What makes your style different than others?
I usually dress without regard for trends. My favorite look is dark denim jeans, shirts and skirts. I put that together with cool accessories and shoes or boots. I love the spring and summer colors, and beautiful floral prints. My favorite colors are light blue, yellow and light purple. And of course you can never go wrong wearing black.

What fashion brands are you personally a big fan of wearing on red carpets and to events?
I like DKNY, Marc Jacobs, Dior, D&G, Prada and Vera Wang. When I dress down, I also like AG, Top Shop, and Guess.

What is your definition of “Glam”?
Glam has to start with a confident woman. You can wear a vintage outfit or glamorous Dresses.

HELIOCARE Presents DIALOGUES IN DERMATOLOGY: PART I

HELIOCARE® PRESENTS:

DIALOGUES IN DERMATOLOGY: PART I

Subject: Intrinsic Skin Damage – How Deep Does It Go?

Noted Dermatologists Explore Aging Skin from Inside Out

Noted dermatologists, Darrell Rigel, MD, Clinical Professor of Dermatology, New York University School Of Medicine MD, MS and Neil Sadick, MD, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College, recently spoke about how our skin ages, looking at the process from deep within the skin. There is a lot of conversation about skin and aging, but it is usually addressed from the outside in. “But what would happen if we were in a little mini submarine inside the body and you could look from inside out. What would you see?” asked Dr. Rigel.

“There’s been a lot of emphasis on the dermis and epidermis, but now we know the aging process involves the deeper dermis down to fat, muscle and bone,” said Dr. Sadick. “At the lowest layers you see changes in terms of loss of volume, irregular cell replication, and breakdown of tissue that occurs in other organs of the body as well. So I think there’s a lot of emphasis now on inside/outside approaches to sun protection and anti-aging. The ability to understand that approach is apparent in the way we are viewing fillers for example. We’re leaning towards volume fillers, rather than superficial line fillers and radio frequency, ultrasound light source technologies that target deeper tissues as well. We’re understanding that the aging process involves deeper tissues, not just the skin.”

“We always think of the skin being on the surface,” said Dr. Rigel, “But the reality is that the skin is more than skin deep. There are a lot of issues that are deeper than the surface, so when you see people whose skin doesn’t glow or they have a little visible sun damage, that’s what you see on the surface, but if you did a biopsy in that area, you can see this goes much further down, even to the levels of your connective tissue and elastic tissue. If you look at a baby’s skin on biopsy, you would see that the elastic fibers look perfectly interweaved. If you look at somebody who’s had a lot of sun damage instead what you see is what we call “silver spaghetti.” Under the microscope it looks like a ball of spaghetti, all those fibers are pulling in different directions. If you go inside and see the skin from the other side, you would see the effects of ultra-violet damage.”

“What I do in my practice,” said Dr. Sadick, “is try to educate my patients when they come in for an anti-aging treatment or skin cancer prevention checks. I tell them that a key tenet to skin health and anti-aging is protection, an inside/outside approach. Agents like the Heliocare daily dietary supplement have been playing an increasing role. Protection is key, so we use all the combinations of fillers and skin care products and protectants. Sunscreen is of course the most important.”

“One million Americans go to a tanning bed every day,” commented Dr. Rigel. “One million Americans. 28 million Americans go to the tanning salon at least once a year. And if you look at 17 and 18 year olds, the prevalence is incredibly high; it’s like 35-40% of tanning bed use multiple times a year in that age group. And that’s when they’re really susceptible to the damage. But some things are changing. If you look on a Monday in the summer, you see people less tan than they used to be. It used to be they’d be coming out with this great tan, now it’s probably not too tan, but we’re not there yet.”

“What do you think of this concept of inside/outside approach for proto-protection?” asked Dr. Sadick. “How can we get people to use sunscreen all year round? How can we get children to start on sunscreen or internal types of protection? I think education is key,” he explains. “I think the concept of an internal/external approach has a lot of merit. It is important to be aware of a product like Heliocare. It’s an anti-oxidant type of supplement and there’s a lot of buzz about it among dermatologists. I think that it’s really important to suppress free radicals which actually damage cells and cause irregular cell replication and cause cells to break down. This anti-oxidant is derived from a fern and I think there are over 25 studies that show you can also decrease redness from either ultraviolet exposure outside or even indoors. Changes happen from fluorescent lighting indoors. So I think anti-oxidants, such as Heliocare, are an important part of skin health now.

“I have to say I think it’s an exciting product,” says Dr. Rigel. “It’s easy to use, it’s safe, and it has been extensively studied for safety.” “When you look at this product, which I also take,” says Dr. Sadick, “it probably decreases redness from ultraviolet exposure. I think many anti-oxidants have been shown in studies to have an anti-inflammatory effect also. We know that inflammation is a major cause of many diseases in the body. So, do you think, Dr. Rigel that this product may also have some anti-inflammatory capabilities to stop aging and sunburned reactions as well?”

“Well it clearly cuts down on the risk of sunburn. And sunburn is related to inflammation. We don’t know all there is to know about anti-oxidants yet. We just know that overall they’re good. It is important for botanical extracts to be studied carefully since the safety and efficacy of each product can depend on which part of the plant is used and how it is extracted.  Heliocare has been studied for well over two decades and I like that the research is ongoing.”

“I think this sort of approach really is state of the art in skin health. I take Heliocare myself and I took it even before everyone started to talk about it, because I thought it was a good protectant for myself, internally and externally, and part of a good long range skincare regimen and overall body health type of program that everyone should partake in.”
