DON’T MELT LIKE A POPSICLE WHILE EXERCISING IN THE SUN THIS SUMMER

It is easy to put aside your workout routine when the summer temperatures rise.  These six tips will keep workout buffs going strong to gain the results they want this summer for a stronger, fitter, and healthier beach body!

1.  HYDRATE:  Hydrate properly with water throughout the day, even on non workout days.  If you are thirsty, you may already be dehydrated!  When your body sweats you lose important electrolytes.  Adding the sizzling summer heat, you are at serious risk.  After a workout, water alone will not replace all the electrolytes lost, so reach for a carbohydrate such as fructose to boost energy production.

2.  AVOID PEAK SUN TIME:  Plan your workouts around the sun – head out in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is the weakest.  If there is a heat advisory,  meaning high ozone and air pollution,  you might want to take your workout indoors.  These pollutants can damage your lungs!

3.  PROTECTION:  Don’t forget about the largest organ of your body – your skin!!  Using a sweat proof sunscreen SPF30 or higher is very important!  Apply a generous amount every 2 hours.  Wear  sunglasses with UV protection to reduce sun glare and protect your eyes. L’Occitane Immortelle Brightening UV Shield SPF 40  offers triple action benefits while protecting skin from the suns harmful rays. visit http://usa.loccitane.com/FO/Immortelle-Brightening-UV-Shield-SPF40,  for a full product description and to view their full product line.

4.  DRESS DOWN:  Avoid wearing heavy, cotton clothing.  Cotton soaks up the sweat and can run you down, feeling tired and heavy.  Wearing moisture wicking workout gear that pulls sweat away from your skin.  Dark colors will protect you from harmful UV rays and don’t forget to protect your scalp with a hat!  The Wallaroo Hat Company http://www.wallaroohats.com offers a wide variety and and stylish collection of hats . Look for the sun icon throughout the site to determine which hats are UPF 50+. These fabrics are tested by the Australian Radiation Protection Agency and block 97.5% of the sun’s ultroviolet rays. Ultraviolet radiation, or UV, is present in sunlight. The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) shows how well a fabric protects your skin from solar UV.   But remember, a Wallaroo hat only protects the skin it covers.

5.  EAT REGULARLY:  The heat can decrease your appetite but it is important to eat normally.  Try to eat small meals 5-6 times a day.  Include lots of fruits and vegetables!

6.  DEET IT:  If you are venturing into grassy areas or the woods, use a DEET based bug repellant to protect against mosquitoes.  DEET based repellants have been shown to last longer and prevent bites better than natural products such as citronella.  With the West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease lurking, it is important to protect yourself.

Most importantly, listen to your body.  Stop immediately if you’re feeling dizzy, faint or nauseous.
